THE SECRET MILLIONAIRE: Channel 4

THIS ARTICLE CONCERNS THE 2006 CHANNEL 4 SECRET MILLIONAIRE SERIES, FOR MORE UP TO DATE ARTICLES CLICK HERE.

Channel 4’s new five part documentary series begins on Wednesday the 29th November at 9pm.

Each week a different multi-millionaire searches for people whose lives he or she can change for the better. Each of our modern-day philanthropists must guarantee to give away thousands of pounds of their own money. For ten days, the millionaires leave their wealthy lifestyle behind and go undercover to live in some of the UK’s toughest areas. They conceal their true identities and immerse themselves in communities with the aim of finding those people that they think deserve their help. On the last day of their visit, they reveal their secret and write their cheques.

Ten years ago, aged just 16, Ben Way made a life changing business deal worth 25 million pounds, making him one of Britain’s youngest self-made millionaires. Six years later, he’d lost the lot. Now, aged 26, Ben has successfully rebuilt his fortune. But, now fully aware of how tough life can be when you hit rock bottom, he wants to find others who deserve a helping hand. “I’ve been incredibly lucky to have ended up on this side of the tracks. I see it a bit like Russian roulette. My life played Russian roulette with me. Fortunately I won and some people haven’t and I can find those people and change their lives.”

In the opening film, Ben says goodbye to his private plane, his central London bachelor pad and his fine dining to live on one of the toughest estates in London. He travels just seven miles across town to Hackney - one of the city’s most deprived areas - notorious for gang culture, violent crime and where nearly 60 percent of the kids grow up in single parent families. For ten days he works as a volunteer youth worker at the Pedro Club alongside its inspirational manager, Ufu, who greets Ben by saying, “welcome to murder mile.” During his stay, Ben lives in a room in a shared flat on the local estate.

But how easy will it be for Ben to befriend a group of youngsters and discover who is most deserving of his help? The kids at the club have a tremendous support and ‘father figure’ in Ufu, who dedicates so much of his time to them and the youth club. Ufu is greatly supported by James Cook, ex-British and European professional super middle weight boxing champion. For the past ten years he has been a local outreach worker, patrolling the streets looking for young people who are truanting or involved in drugs.

Ben struggles to decide who deserves his money, but after an emotional ten day visit he finally reveals his identity and the true purpose of his stay…. how will his new friends react?

Is it me or is this just sick. I’ve know one of these so called philanthropistss and i just think its a cheap way for them to get publicity. It just fills me with disgust,

  2. David McQueen says:

I actually know Ben and we spoke about this project. In fact he is a very honest and humble individual and he learned a lot personally from this programme.

Yes reality TV provides entertainment, but it doesnt always highlight what has happened once the camera stops rolling.

  3. S. Dalgleish says:

Better this than I’m a Celebrity pure trash TV. About time TV had a social conscious, it sounds really interesting!

  4. Andy says:

    Hey Ben

I need someone to help me out as well!! I am going to uni next year and I need the money to pay it + I have 5.000.00 on debts which I cannot pay off!

Any chance to change my future too?

    Thanks

  5. michelle tierney says:

    Hey Ben,

Quick question do you fancy a date?

You will probably laugh but im serious!
I think your lovely! Anyway let me know my treat!

    xx Michelle :)

  6. Keith Richardson says:

At last a programme worth watching, Ben Way gave not just money which would have been quite easy for him but gave something of himself and I think will continue to be putting a lot more into the community in the future.
Well Done Channel Four your produce a lot of rubbish but this was excellent!!!!

  7. wendi says:

secret millionaire documentory!! This has been a great documentory to watch. It is amazing and humbling to see that there are exceptional people working to help others. With such dedication to help others…the youth worker, Uro and James, should get more recognition and help from their community and council. Benjamin Way was great!!

  8. Julie says:

Excellent - is this likely to be shown again I have told all my friends and family about it?

Glad to see there are people like Uro and James in this world. I think Ben learned a lot too from the experience. Good luck to Wayne.

I would be elated if my daughter bought someone like Ben home.

  9. Sally says:

Amazing the first comment, believing it’s all about the millionaire, I’m sure that Ben isn’t relly bothered about the publicity.

What amazed me the most about the programme was not how amazing it is, that a millionaire gave up his time and even his money to help people to change their lives. But how a young 16 year old can laugh off and get use too ‘rape’ and ‘murder’ in her street! That scared me to hear her say that! Question is should she ‘get use to that’ No she shouldn’t! So perhaps we need to look at what our society is doing to change that 16 year olds mind and others like hers. And if it takes someone like Ben to help change those minds, then so be it. What are you doing to helpchange minds????

Congratulations to Ben, Uro, James and Wayne for help to make a difference. Especially to James for his work to combat the drugs scene!!!!

  10. Jason says:

Like many people that watched the Documentary, I found it postive and inspirational. I do not undertand the first comment about the selfish reasons for the show being broadcast. If that were the case, I’m sure much more would be revealed about Ben’s Business, what exactly he does etc. but it wasn’t, which in my opinion made this anything but a selfish publicity orientated documentary. Do we know what Ben does exactly, or indeed the name of his business? No, that really isn’t the point of the programme. And anyone that isn’t filled with jealously and envy, would clearly see that. A great simple idea and a very refreshing change! Well done Ben and everyone else involved with that production!

  11. Eve says:

Any ideas to help me on my career? I watched this and found it inspirational it was a great eye opener to what i could start to do in my youth, seeing as i’m only 14, and still have a LONG way to go. Am currently into graphic animation and fashion designing. Any tips to feed my creativity?

    Eve Islington, North London

  12. H.Mitchell says:

Hi, i watched this show last week! thought it was a great idea! I love the m&m jeans made by the fashion designer! and i want a pair so badly!

i know the chances of any1 knowing the answer to this question is slim, but does anyone know the name of the designer, or his brand! i want to contact them desperatly!

    thankyou!

    plz help me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  13. Ufu says:

Should you wish to contact Wayne then I’m sure I can oblige if you leave a message here as to how I might pass on your contact details to him.

Just in case you’re a little dubious about doing so, I’m the person being called Uro here - I prefer it to my actual name which is Ufu…lol. And a quick thank you to everyone that contacted us and left various messages of good luck, congratulation, etc. You’re all fabulous and have made our year a fantastic one.

By the way Ben is as genuine and lovely as he actually came over on the program!

    regards,
    Ufu

although ive not seen this programme i have heard alot bout it, & i think its a good idea. its nice to see people helping others need more like it in this world this day & age.
i would like someone to help me but then i think this is my world n ive got to make the best of what ive got same as everyone else n besides id be embrassed saying about my probs n asking for help but there are people with alot worse than my problems. this programme is a good idea n well done to the millionaires who have helped in the programme well done to all

  15. fabio says:

A great program, would be nice to see far more ppl trying something like this. Seriously what good does bigbrother or get me out of here do.
PPl may say there doing this for there own publicity but thats ridiculous. Nice to see the luckier ppl in the world trying to help make a difference.
Perhaps providing an example to other wealthy ppl to help the less fortunate.
Personally iv been trying to “make it” since i was 14 now 22.Hasn’t happened yet, but crazily if i were given a chance like this i probably would refuse, it would take the satisfaction of doing it alone away. Especially after so much effort.
Anyway, there are ppl out there that so need this help. And never get recognised. keep up the good work

  16. kruze says:

I think this programme was absolutely fascinating and inspiring. I really take my hat off to Ben for giving his time and money to a worthy cause. It doesn’t matter what little difference people may argue it has made, it’s the fact that it at least made some difference. More power to you Ben.

    kRUZe.

  17. Sarah says:

Thank you Channel 4 for bringing us a show about real people who are real heros who make such a difference. We have become so cynical about life - but this programme restored my faith in hummanity. What a genuine guy Ben was and is, Uro and James - I wish there were more unselfish people like you.
It would be great for the show to come back in a year and see the long lasting impact that was Ben’s goal.
The show made me smile and cry at the same time!

  18. Matt says:

Just thought I’d add to the chorus of support for the show… Just saw the show about Hackney - took a few days since I’m in Canada(!), and even over here, thought it was amazing! There was nothing exploitative at all in it…

It kept making me think how much better the world would be if it was filled with people like Ufu, James, and Ben…
    Good work all of you!

  19. Callum says:

    Hi,
If you actually get to read this Ben, firstly I think it was a great moment when you showed the check to the guy who runs the youth centre. I felt good just watching. Secondly I am a person who is going to change this world for the better, I know this it’s writing in every cell I inhabit and chipped onto my bones. I would like to ask you a question about motivating yourself and I don’t mean exercising regularly and eating healthy I mean gaining a drive, starting shit and seeing it through. I have a very good intellect. I have fantastic ideas especially of how to make the changes to the world. But any time I even think of a pen and paper something within stops me, like you I am dyslexic but I never had anyone to challenge my worth. How do I start to show my worth? Please advice on how gain a drive and carry on moving. Thank you!
    In good Faith Callum

  20. Jamie says:

Hi, i was watching the show, and i was really impressed. It can be very easy to give money to charity, and i fully support it, but i think getting to know the people you’re giving to is equally important. I thought that Ben Wey was brilliant, he seemed very genuine and it was really encouraging to see someone so young with such as brilliant outlook and maturity. It would be very easy to let the money go to one’s head, but Ben seemed to be very respectful of everyone around him, where he could have been obnoxious or snobbish.

I just thought the least i could do was comment on this generosity!

Well done Channel 4 and Ben, keep it going!

    Jamie, 14

  21. Sarah Kelsall says:

Ben, you are a true inspiration to all in all walks of life. Many individuals could learn a lot from your actions and your attitude. Stay true and don’t ever change. All the best in everything you do… you’ve been my inspiration, Thank you.

All the best from Sarah x

  22. Nicola Bridger says:

Young people so easily get labeled with negative tags.
Ben is one amongst us who can make a difference and I applaud him for that.Every young person has a talent. It is our job as adults to support them in excavating that talent. Thank you Channel 4 for being real.

  23. Bill says:

  24. Spoon says:

I’ve just watched The Secret Millionaire for the first time and it made me want to puke! In fact it has driven me to write in a blog for the first time ever!

The whole design of this social experiment was ridiculous and insulting to anyone who has watched more than a nanosecond of British Television in the last 10 years. The millionaire philanthropist from Bishop Aukland was said to be living “undercover amongst the poor of Liverpool’s Kensington district, using the cover-story that he himself was a “regular poor guy on a social exchange programme from the countryside? He then proceeded to stalk members of the community with a film crew (probably the same lot that followed Michael Portillo around Asda when the famous Tory MP decided to have a road to Damascus experience amongst the Liverpool poor) looking for a worthy candidate onto which he might see fit to offload some spare change. Unsurprisingly, all of the scousers that he met greeted him with suspicion and a cynical disregard. How often do you meet a stranger with a film crew who only seems interested in your personal finances and all round worthiness (is this guy from the DSS or what?). In fact, our benevolent millionaire was auditing every person he met, carefully calculating risk and investment potential, but he did not find many that could meet his strict criteria.

He met a guy in the pub who each week planned the use of his state benefits pound for pound. Each week he looked forward to benefits day so that he could go to the shops and buy some fags and cans of beer. However our lordly do-gooder did not like the idea giving handouts to the unemployed because “there are plenty of jobs out there if you want them. Instead he saw fit to give his own handout (a £10 000 deposit for a house) to a couple that had lived beyond their means and had landed in credit card debt. This struggling couple obviously took the money and ran to the nearest estate agent without asking why our man had seen fit to provide them with the steam from his proverbial. They had met him in church when their eager eyes had lit up with the prospect of their 15 minutes in front of the lens and a possible Cilla Black-style “Surprise Surprise moment presented itself. After all, they may be poor but the British public is TV-savvy and it doesn’t take a genius to put 2 and 2 together when all the man asks you is how much comes in and goes out of your bank account each week?

In a culture that is obsessed with celebrity status and reality TV it does not come as a shock when the many unknown rich of our nation want to get in on the act. And whilst applying for the X-factor or Big Brother is a little beneath this privileged section of society, new programs like The Secret Millionaire and The Dragons Den allow these people to have their 15 minutes of fame without being abused by a man with a beltline around his armpits. The cynic could also argue that these people are promoting themselves because they want to promote their businesses and business reputations and therefore make a profit from giving? Perhaps they are less inspired by the general public getting up and making idiots of themselves on the X-factor but are taking the lead from Bono, Jamie Oliver and Bob Geldof who are also so very conspicuous in there sacrifice.

    Spoon

Very eloquently put! I couldn’t agree more!

  26. Mina E. O'Shea says:

    Hi Ben

How about giving my 27-year-old daughter, Mary, a chance to break in the music industry? She has a degree in Performing Arts, getting classical singing and piano lessons and had Grade 8 certificate in violin. She also plays the Irish bodhran and viola. Presently she is recording her EP of songs she herself composed. She is still living with us and putting her money into her recording. She is truly talented (I’m her mother) and many people say so. Please, could you help? Thanks.

    Mina (Mary’s Mum)

  27. dawn says:

wow wee he gave away in all I think £17,500 !! watched the programme and thought “what a pointless waste of time really” people baring their souls for some rich, smug businessman to decide whether he wants to change their life - I wonder if he misses that £17,500. NOT

  28. Bob says:

Hi, I think that this is a great program. The way that the program works is good. However, when watching it with both friends and family the general consensus is that they don’t give enough money away (I have friends that give more than that away every month) and that they don’t always get very good responses. Apart from this I think the whole concept is fantastic.

  29. Scott says:

Spoon I love your style of writing, but feel you shouldn’t comment as I’d expect your idea of doing good is buying a lottery ticket. These people have been extrodinary to invest their own time and money in amazing people that take no pay or credit for their efforts to support a crumbling community. You should feel ashamed, I have watched the last two episodes in awe, and I too have now decided to offer two worthy causes an opportunity to change their lives.

I too am very priveleged and could not spend my wealth in my lifetime. I don’t like the principle of charity as nobody has given me as much as a five pound note in my life. However from watching this show I have been conformed to think otherwise. I do not want any television coverage but would like to use this blog as a platform to reach others.
I have purchased a mobile specifically for the purpose of taking peoples messages. Please feel free to leave a message and I will respond to those people that I feel deserve some help.

I do have some reservations so please do not call if you fit into any of the following categories: - able bodied unemployed types, drug addicts, gold diggers, underage parentage, persons obsessesed with their physical appearance, credit card abusers and families with more children than they can afford. I hope I have not offended anyone but I have an ethical code which I have to follow to ensure only the worthiest causes receive my help. My Tel No: -07770756408

    I await your call.

    Scott

  30. Bob says:

I actually think that what Scott (see above) is doing by helping people personally without the use of a film crew is more charitable than the program as he is not gaining publicity at the same time. However, I do not believe that the program is making the slightest bit of difference to the ‘crumbling community’ as it will take a lot more than a few thousand pounds to sort that out and at the end of the day channel 4 are producing this program for monetry benefit not the good of the community. I do think that as a program, this is a great idea but not as a concept for making the world a better place. Also, I would like to disagree with Scott, unless your personal fortune runs in to the billions then it is very possible to spend it during a lifetime, maybe you have just run out of ideas. If you’re looking for a way to get rid of it I would only be to happy to help.

To who ever it may concern. My husband sold our how in England to try and have a better live in France. We bought a property in france with the proccedes, it isnt worth a lot as there is still renovations to do, but we ran out of money and had to retun to England to work. As our French language skills are not that good we coud’nt get a job over there. We would love to return to France and finish renovations, and to renovate the barn so we could use it for holiday makers or deprived kids that need a holiday. There is also 2 large fields that we could use for camping but hav’nt got the funds to develope my husband is an engineer and was in the same firm for 33 years and on a good wage before we moved to france now we are back in England, he is still in engineering but is now on a low wage. They would’nt take him back at his old job because of the quadruple bypass he had 5 years ago I on the other hand used to be a sewing machinest but can’t do that any more as I have rhumatism in my right hand. I have done some retraining to use a computer I have level 2 computers and ECDL word proccessing my typing isnt fast but I know how to input data and use the internet also working on spread sheets have done a wide range of work over the years but cant get a job at the moment as no one will take a chance as i dont have experience. I would like to work from home using the internet that way I could move back to france and still earn money. My work experences include pluming/ electrics /running my own business for while manufacturing bouncy castles ect/ also soft furnishings/ bricklaying/ plastering/ gardening/ bar and cellar work the list goes on as I am able to pick up things easy. 39. Devil's advocate says:

Could it be that the ones who hate this programme are a little jealous of others’ fortune? A driver wants gratitude for letting another driver pass, so why can’t these rich people have their 15 mins of fame on tv, especially when they are actually helping someone so in need?

I am just unsure of how someone can decide in 10 days that someone is genuine and worthy of their money!

If i had money like them i would surely give it. i give money every month despite the little i earn. If an average person gives money, it is known as generosity, why is it then called publicity if a wealthy person gives away money or adopts a child? There are enought children without parents, why not look after them first rather than bring more in to the over populated world? but that’s another story.

  40. Devil's advocate says:

    Scott with the mobile phone,
    are you serious?

  41. niki says:

spoon, you’re so right. I’ve had an idea that will help the homeless off the street, with a room and in conjuction learning skills for work placements. Liverpools crying out for skilled labour at the moment. It will want peeps to fill the offices that have been built, hospitality, shops etc, etc, etc. I just need the backing of a do-gooder. I only have the ideas, has anybody else got any?

  42. Ruth says:

I’ve missed both programmes but will try to tune in for the next one as I agree with many of the comments above that it’s reality worth watching - no Kangaroo bits to be eaten here!

However other comments made such as ‘why not help ME?’, ‘why not give away more?’ and other such ideas are awful. Of course there are many people who really deserve help, equally there are just as many who can’t get off their butts to help themselves let alone others.

We tried to help someone by helping them to buy their own home. It was partly an investment for ourselves but for nine months not a day went by where this person and their daughter did not eat in our home, have something bought for them (they cleverly never actually asked) or have many hours of our time spent on them and what they wanted. At the end of it though they decided they wouldn’t be able to afford the mortgage, even though they had lived there rent free from us for five months, and they walked away. Apart from owing us £3000 we also lost another £7000 - just for trying to help someone. I work with this person and others who work there have made 2+2 = 5 & somehow I have ended up the bad guy!

My advice - never pay out more than you can afford to lose. Your time is often more important than money - and give as you receive! p.s. This persons brother - 31 & never worked a day in his life because the benefits are too good!

  43. Bob says:

Lots of interesting comments on here but the begging students should be ashamed of themselves!! Most of us have difficulty paying off debts from time to time but you just have to plough on and find a solution for yourself. Charity should be reserved for those who genuinely need it and have no other options open to them. Just my opinion!!

  47. Andy says:

    Hello

Just wanted to make a brief comment to those cynics and doubters of the show and for those who feel more money should be given out.

Come on guys does it really matter?? sure the Rich businessman is getting great PR and they could afford to give more but at the end of the day they are making people happy and giving some people a break they would’nt normally get. There’s always going to be calls for more deserving people it just seems you’re dammed if you do and dammed if you don’t. Why can’t people just see it purely as heartwarming TV.

  48. Ufu says:

    Hi All,

  49. ANGELA HOLDEN says:

Hello, i just wanted to say that i have watched the secret millionaire for the last 2 week ( missed the first ) and thought it was brillient i found it very heart touching to see there is still people out there willing to help others for the past two episodes i have been in tears watching when he presents the cheque to thoses he feels deserves it, i can NOT understand these people who say there after the lime light as these millionaires REMEMBER have to live for 10 days in a town thay dont know, all there family away from them and living in sometimes down trodded areas with only £10 in there pockets, when thay are used to having hundreds and may be thousands of pounds.
me and my family struggle every day to put food on the table and to make sure we have a roof over our heads but what makes us go on is to remember there is people out there who are even less well off than us.
i am not able to work due to being disabled when i had my third child i had a epidural and it damaged my lower spine which the hospital will NOT take any responsibility for,and my partner is my full time registered carer along with him also doing most of the child care duties.
and if you are thinking oh thay are on benefits then YES we are but this is only because we are not able to go to work due to my disability and me needing round the clock care.
before we had children we worked all the hours for very little pay i was only on £1.25 per hour and my partner on £2.25 per hour so we know how difficult it can be.

what i am trying to get at is even though we struggle to make ends meet, my daughter came home from school this week and said that the school are trying to help the homless this year by giving them food,so she wanted to put a box together for them and we have it is only £20 worth of food but i think someone will be very greatful for it after all when we are sitting down to eat our christmas dinner we have to think of the people out there with nothing but a cardboard box homeless.THE MILLIONAIRES OUT THERE KEEP DOING IT AS IT WORKS.
    EVERY LITTLE HELPS.

  50. Margaret Todd Sweeney says:

I liked the programme on Wednesday, December 13th 2006 it was a dream come true for these people and lifted them out of their mundane lifes for a time and showed that the millionaire still kept his heart while he has still so much money I wish them all well. Its a wonderful dream for all good luck and good health to spend it.

  51. Bob says:

I bet they don’t even use there own money. Surely they get paid for doing the show. People have to remember this is a TV Show not a charity, they are producing the program to MAKE MONEY not help people.

  52. David says:

Its a programme Id meant to watch but only caught the last episode…..The whole way the show is made finding different ppl with unique needs (not spongers or ppl who believe they are a special case)
It was clear to see how this Indian gent was touched by a man desperate to be near his kids who despite his own poverty helped an old lady by weeding her garden for no payment, just a meal she made & his new poor freind he treated to a take away snack with no bad motives…it was wonderful to see them given a helping hand. Best tv in ages

Hi, I feel a bit weird cause I’ve never done this before but I stumbled onto this website and I’m compelled to say something. I’m the one from the second episode where John Elliott gives the money to the couple to buy a house. Now everyone has their opinions as to whether we were deserving of the money, whether he was patronising us or doing it for publicity, and that’s fine. To be honest, I absolutely agree that he could have found someone who needed/deserved it more than we did. We got ourselves into a mess when we first got married and we are still paying the consequences. But what John did for us was to enable us to not be paying out dead money every month. The truth is that we were paying the same for rent as for a mortgage, but this house is ours! That is some security for me, for my children, and that’s no small thing, especially if you’ve never had it. I know I might sound naive or even a trifle idiotic, but can’t people just be happy for us? Why dissect everything? I’m sure the millionaires all got publicity out of it, and of course the channel made money as well. But you know what? Normal people, people who have made mistakes, who would never be offered help by anyone else, have been helped by this series, by these millionaires. Surely that’s not a bad thing? Maybe I’m being simplistic.
Aaaand another thing…in response to Spoon, I don’t know if he will read this but I just had to stand up for myself and my family a little bit! When we met the producers of this programme, what we were told is that this elderly guy from the country was coming to spend a week in Liverpool to see what it was like living on a state pension in a city, and wanted to meet people who were struggling by to chat about how easy or hard it was or whatever. Hence all the questions about finance were easily attributed to that. Believe me when I say, that we didn’t all get in a huddle and go, “Hey - what I think is really going on here, is that this guy is a freakin millionaire!! We could get something out of this!!” I mean, come on, you talk like it happens every day. We weren’t particularly comfortable with cameras on us, but we wanted to do what was right, and what was right was to welcome this guy to the church, to be friendly not just to him but also to the crew, who were all really nice people. Seriously, we were being friendly. Is that really so hard to believe? As for fifteen minutes of fame, uh I haven’t had a call from heat yet so I think we’re safe to say that this hasn’t made us famous. People who have recognised us in the street have nothing but good wishes for us, which makes me a bit more optimistic about people in this day and age. Anyway, I know I’ve waffled a bit but basically I’m saying, obviously you can think what you like about the recipients of the money including myself and my family. But for goodness’ sake, someone did something nice for someone else; they gave them a helping hand, and someone made a programme showing how it happened. Isn’t that a good thing? Have I missed something?

  54. Tabby Katt says:

    Mashy,

thanks for sharing that with us. I really identified with you and your wife and thought your story was touching.

As you rightly say, of course in the world there are more deserving cases, John could have sent his money to the thirld world. But you guys were awarded the money, and I think you really deserved it.

You seemed like a lovely family, its nice to see a whole extended family who are so close to each other.

Congratulations, I hope you have many happy memories in your new home!

  55. Bob says:

I reckon that a more interesting program would be that the people in poorer areas swap with the millionaire and see how they handle suddenly having lots of money, a large house, running a business and dealing with the everyday work that the millionaires are used to.

  56. G says:

    Hi guys,

I hope all is well. With regards to this “Secret Millionaire”programme,I personally think that there are far more worthy causes in the UK that would benefit from a little financial help than those featured.I feel absolutely disgusted that these dreadful so called “Millionaires” have the cheek to adopt the life styles of people who genuinely are finding it difficult to get by on what they have.

I feel that these awful people are exploiting those who are less fortunate than themselves to gain a piece of cheap publicity. SHAME ON YOU CHANNEL 4,SHAME ON YOU !!

  57. Brad Mullet says:

G - I think you’re slightly missing the point. I’ve just watched the end of an episode, and saw how genuinely touched some of those people were to receive assistance.

Random acts of kindness are hard to come by. Whether you’re cynical about the businessmens’ motivations or not, they have done a positive thing and you shouldn’t overlook that.

I can only hope that other people are inspired by this programme to do the same.

  58. dial a hubby says:

It is very rare these days, to meet, let alone, see on tv father and son interact in such a way. To see them holding each other in order to communicate such deep feelings of mutual respect, compassion without any fear of ridicule.

This program was as much about parenting as it was about the human hardship aspect. I was both emotional, tearful and thankful at the the end of the program to know that I am bringing my son up to be a good human being. which is all I ever wanted.

Thankyou to the whole Williams family for sharing this rare and heart warming moment in your world.

  59. Lesleyann says:

Ive just watched the programme for the first time tonight after being told by friends to watch it. I live in Manchester and have a good standard of living but I was brought up in the North East and know exactly the circumstances the people portrayed are living in. I was brought to tears of the generosity of Paul and Ben. Yes they are privileged, but Paul has done this himself and good on him.I would make my kids the same if I had his business sense and Id hope I could bring my kids up as well as him , stop the jealousy as he is a good man.

  60. sharon says:

I have watched secret millionaire tonight for the very first time, both Paul & Ben have made huge differences to peoples lifes through their generosity. How can this possibly be a bad thing, as for people inferring this is because they want publicity, hardly with a fortune like theirs why would they. Why cant people see the good in others always having to add negatives to such a positive programme??
Personally good luck to all those millionaires who want to share some of their good fortune with the less fortunate, I will certainly be watching the programme in the future and KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!!
Merry Christmas to you all, take care!

  61. Alison Trimble says:

    Hi BEN

I feel very humble to see how you are try to change peoples lives, I’m really glad to have seen last nights episode after being told about it by a friend.

You should be very proud of yourself and for your father, for being in this situation. Your actions should be an example to others who may also be fortunate to make these generous donations.

Keep up the good work guys,

    Love Ali XXX

  62. Paul says:

    Dear Paul & Ben,
I Would like to say your a fantastic pair of guys. If only other people in such fortunate positions in life could do the same as you both did!! What a different place the world would be today. I certainly do my bit for society if only people could just follow suit. Good Luck and hope you and your family have a great christmas and fantastic new year.

after looking at some of the comments regarding secret millionaire, channel 4 has brought a cross divide between the rich and poor and well done to them for doing so,, if it wasnt for the programme those deserving people would not have got handouts from the millionaires even though they dont expect them to do so ,one may say they should get off their backsides and work,, agree yes,, but where there is a high unemployment rate and you cant find work,, what do you do?? i was once in that situation and sometimes its hard to get out of and im a hard worker, not a layabout, years later ive got self employed and earning good money so i know what its like to be on the breadline john bolton

  64. chelle from surrey says:

    awesome!!!!!!
as i was scanning the tv channels in our house after a hard-day’s work, i saw “the secret millionaire” program starring a certain Mr.Way & i got totally glued to it. i watched each episode whenever i have time. it is a very inspirational and an eye opener program.
i was really touched by this program especially when Mr.Way handed out the cheque to the guy( Mr. Ufu) who runs the San Pedro Club ; to the young designer to the couple who got married. Nice wedding by the way!
truly one cannot please everybody. the comments above about Mr.Way, & to the rest of the poeple involved is unfair. i dont know this guy ( the millionaire) but to spend his valuable time, energy, emotion, courage and his money is just awesome! having to leave your comfort zone for over a week, live in an unfamiliar place is something else.it takes a lot of nerves. very few can do that! we need more poeple like Mr.Way!
but saying that, as ordinary poeple like we are, we can all make a difference in this world like being a little more positive and not be cynical about everything when someone tries to help. ” a million thanks to you” is all we need in this world for a gesture of kindness.
God bless everyone and happy new year!!!!
ps i love those shirts, which shop should i go to buy one?( i guess this Q is directed to the guy who designs the shirt….tnx

  65. jacqui says:

I cannot understand why so many people find it difficult to be giving.Whilst these people have given away money because they can, what we are forgetting is giving is not just about money..it can be about love…time..sacrifice..hope etc.we all have something that can make a difference to peoples lives as long as we take the time to look inside. What about the drug addict who can stop some else being in he same space as himself, the abused stopping someone else from being abused…it goes on and on.Rather than worry what other people are getting more people should be lookig at what they can give.I truly believe the message behind this programme is about not about publicity but how teamwork and positive thinking can fundamentally change lives in a family and a community.

  66. jeannie says:

HI everyone just watched for the first time,The Secret Millionaire, it was so uplifting, lots of disabled kids and young people got help as well as a caring family and an elderley lady who didnt have that a lot in life but found the time to help others, so what is the problem with giving the good people a reward and help, there are so many kind and caring people in this world of ours who never get reconised for the work they do, and then theres the ones who put them down when they do get something, I retired from NHs caring for sick children i then got sick myself and had to retirer due to ill health but I didn’t sit on my backside, I struggle with the pains of Lupus and still manage to do some things to help make other people lives a bit better, I started the first Burscough Festival in 30 years which Put a smile on over 2,000 poeples faces in my community (young and old alike )I also do volunteer work for Southport swan resque which was formed and still run by an 80 years old lady along with husband and volunteers, who feed the birds catch them if they are ill, then we take them to the RSPCA.
This lady is a saint to animals as far as I can See, and her dream is to have her own lake for the swans and to be able to pay for a vet to be on hand instead of the volunteers having to drive over 50 mile to take sick animals to be treated at the RSPCA wild life centre, If the secret millionair came and reconised her and the teams work well I wouldn’t Knock it, so Bring on the Millionairs :) Jeannie x ps and we need a youth Center and swimming pool in Burscough so I dot mind them helping me out with that project double smile :)

  74. Paul says:

Could had done with meeting these people myself but it is a little late now, although it is very rewarding and heart felt to see that others rather than myself have had a twist of fate and a new sense of hope.
congratulaitions to them and best wishes, I disagree that these people are doing it for publicity, I find that a very bitter and selfish thing to say.
Try and show a little more consideration and passion.

  75. Ruth says:

I’ve been watching Secret Millionaire since it started and the latest one with Emma was by far my favourite, I couldn’t stop crying, when she gave that old lady her cheque, it was so sweet and all of them deserved everything they got!!!!! Emma I think your amazing!!! Your sweet, caring and very successful, I wish you all the best in the future!!!

    Hi all.

I like the Secret Millionaire programme a lot - I normally hate reality TV but this has touched a cord with me.

By the way - we can all make a difference - you don’t need a million £££…I found this site http://www.pledgebank.com last year where you can register your pledge - I did a pledge and have continued to try and do good things when I can it is an excellent feeling even the little things make someones day and make you feel better as a person in this crazy society that we now live…..go on - you know you want to !!

  77. Raj Patel says:

    To Secret Millionaires

I haven’t seen any of the programmes but heard about them, I amin need of some help, I have tried all the convential means but have not got anywhere, although charity would be nice the help that I require is where repayments will be made, just to get my family and myself into accommadation that we can call our own, rather then give dead money in rent.

    Any help would be appreciated.

  79. premiershipblade says:

    Calvin,

You don’t need a millionaire you just need a bit of information to help you on your way. I am told that there is a shortage of people with your skills.

Maybe you need to target your business to the demand …why don’t you contact your local chamber of commerce and set up an appointment - they offer free advice and may have links into other regions where this sort of skill is in demand - http://www.businesslink.gov.uk

Also have you tried researching what companies are currently out there and contacting them - you could even set up as a freelance to help them during busy times if they have no vacancies…

good luck - stay positive !

    Premiership blade !

  81. premiershipblade says:

    Michaela,

Learn from your experiences and take each day by day..

Two years ago I lost everything - my partner, home, job and didn’t even have a key of my own - at aged 32 this was very daunting but you know what I came out of it….now back in work earning more than I ever have, have bought my own (modest) flat and in a relationship and have met some great new friends as started again in a new area.

Even when the walls fall down around you there is a way out - sounds naff but if you are scared start with reading: Feel the Fear and do it anyway. It is a bit of a cheesy read at times but some good messages in there to help you start to sort yourself out…

By the way - be very careful about putting your postcode and house number on the web !!! no one is magically going to solve your problems it is up to you to start some action now - its your life so look inwards and start living it NOW !!

    GOOD LUCK

  84. gronia says:

… i wonder do you ben, or other millionaires read the comments here?!… or do you realize how much impact a little help from guys like you could have on certain lives? i am in my mid-40’s, am single, and work as a musician. For the second time i am now suffering from breast cancer, which is both very frightening and very worrying. As i don’t earn very much it has been difficult for me to create a secure financial future for myself. I recently inherited a realtively small sum of money. I realize this really needs to be invested well to help protect me from what could be a very uncertain professional future with increasing medical bills and decreasing energy for earning money. I know with my intellect that with this sum it could be possible for me to create a situation where i would not need to work, in case my health would not allow me; however, i feel i have neither the relevant information, contacts or perhaps entrepreneurial skills to aid me. It would be a dream for me to suddenly become free of financial worries, which worries certainly do not help in trying to get well quickly.. but it would also be of enormous help to get advice which would enable me to become financially independant in my own right… if anyone would like to help at any level i would be
    so grateful.

  85. kim cowdrey says:

just wanted to add my bit, as soon as a reality show like this goes on air, all the people who are so hard done by crawl out of their shells, whining about how hard life is, take a good look around you and perhaps you may notice people who havent got any money, elderly people who have to choose whether to eat or heat their room for example. try putting something back into society like saying good morning to a complete stranger, it may make you feel better. as for the secret millionaires out there, good luck to them and if by giving their money away it puts a smile on someones face then the world is a better place for their generosity.

  86. safia hijazi says:

What I am wondering is - do these secret millionaires really give away their money or is it money which they are paid by the t.v.station.

  87. Dave Cummings says:

What a fantastic show!!!! Channel 4 has hit it right on the nail.. Timing was perfect in the light of the negativity that all black communities are facing in the spotlight of the media. This programme enforces the fact that communities throughout the U.K should not be tarnished by the activities of a few bad apples.

Take for example the young budding entrepreneur. Fantastic ideas and vision plus, the all important belief in his ability and the niche market that he can service. Now matter how unique his business plan and presentation to a bank would be. There is no way that a bank would provide him with the start up loan needed to develop his dream. The so called ‘no go areas’ throughout the U.K are filled to the brim with talented young people. The problem is that there is no avenue for them to develop these dreams.

Ben, I do hope that this has been an experience that you will take with you throughout the remainder of your business / personal life. The country needs people like you who have the capabilities of thinking outside of the box and the vision to determine future opportunities within challenging environments. I do hope that your plans to assist other communities like Hackney continue on from strength to strength.

Giving people a chance to show their true potential regardless of color or religion is by far the greatest legacy one could wish to leave behind in anyone lifetime.

Congratulations Ben, May God provide you with the strength and determination to go from strength to strength. There will always be haters out there, just stay focused and remain on track

    My Very Best Wishes

  88. HC says:

I have been asked to appear on the second series and I think it takes some courage to take yourself out of your comfort zone, away from the family.

It doesnt matter what you do in life, someone is always going to criticise you or your motives, what I have learnt is not to let that stop you

  89. Sam says:

Can I just say that after watching secret millionaire with Ben Way, that It actually made me realise that there are a lot of people out there that are worse off than you are and we all need to stop feeling sorry for ourselves. To all those people that have left a note pleading for money… are you really that jealous of the people that are being helped out that you feel that you need to tell everyone your case. It just so happened that these people were lucky enough to be in this situation but they didn’t know that Ben was a millionaire, and to be honest he didn’t have to help them out at all. So while your feeling sorry for yourself and thinking that all these millionaires should be giving away their hard earned cash why don’t you get up off your arses and do something for yourself something that you can be proud of and not relying on handouts, because you are the people that really don’t deserve anything. By the way, James and Ufu you are proper! Ben I think your lovely to…but just a small question to you… where did that black eye come from! x

  90. Brian says:

It does not matter how much he gave away. The fact is he done it and changed these peoples lives and has made friends and these people will never forget him. Paul has inspired me to help when i can. I am not a millionaire but have realised after watching this how lucky i am. We need to think that we can make a change and it does not take much to do this. If we can all help one people then our world would not be like it is. If there was more millionaires like Paul in this world who can help then they would get the same satisfaction that he and Ben got. They should be proud of themselves and the people who can help but dont should have a look at themselves. Other people deserve as much in life as thay do but dont have that opportunity. For me i think Paul is a gem of a guy and deserves every penny he has made. And i hope he can help his new friends and keep in touch with them as he will never be forgotten in there hearts.

  94. sandra brown says:

I thought Ben was great, loved the Black Eye WHERE DID YOU GET IT? I live quite close to Hackney, around Hatfield. Any places around that area that might need a vouleteer a few evenings a week and weekends. keep up the great work guys, this world needs so many more people like you.

  95. Susan says:

I have only just heard about this show, I didn’t realize that it had been around for such a long time. I do think it is a wonderful idea. I think that the program isn’t so much about the publicity being gained by the millionaires on the show, but by creating interest for other persons of wealth. To be used to inspire more people who have been blessed, or worked hard to help others less fortunate.

I have a friend who I would like see helped. She and her fiance have been through some horrbile things in the last year. They have lost her house, not because they overspent, but because she has been unable to work. Although, she has been trying to find things to do to make money, it hasn’t been easy. Her fiance has been working full time, but after the mortgage on his house is paid, they are only left with about £200 for food, petrol, gas and electric. They are having serious issues with his ex. She has been harassing them, and not allowing him to see his kids. His ex has been trying to delay him buying her out of the jointly owned home, so she can force him to sell, even through she already has a house through DSS. His children are currently on the child protection register because of severe emotional abuse from their mother. Nothing seems to be going their way. They have done everything asked of them by social services and the solicitors. They keep on being told that the girls will be coming to live with them, and then nothing happens. They keep on trying to figure out what to do to make more money, while trying to keep their costs as low as possible.

All the while, they are still staying as upbeat as possible. I really feel that they could use some. I don’t think that they would take handouts, but someone showing them how to make money would be acceptable. I would love to see them catch a break and get some help.

    Susan

Its self glorification and it makes me sick that their are actually idiots that think that they woke up one day and thought ‘Im going to give some of my money away today to someone that needs it more than me’
1000s of people each your bequeath millions to charities and they haven’t been on TV. Bill Gates although universally despised by people that use a PC is the biggest donator to charities worldwide and gives millions away but have you ever seen him on the TV sitting in a flat on a council estate trying to live like someone that has virtually nothing?
I salute anyone that came from nothing and made themselves a fortune but as I said at the beginning this is no more than self glorification and im surprised ch4 hasn’t got her wearing a Superwoman costume on.

  99. Courtney Hill says:

I watched the last few moments of the show featuring Jill with tears running down my face, this from a guy who would consider himself a former tough South Londoner. She is truley an example of what once represented the better side of the East End of London and now sadly seems to have gone, she truley humbled me.

I am in the process of trying to start a business myself and can only hope it will be sucessful enough to be able to help those who just need that chance to shine. We may be from different sides of the river, but the lady is a class act and class, humility and most importantly true honour is so missing today.

One of your best shows CH4 keep it up, but I may have to bill you for tissues if the next show is that emotional.

I watched the first series of secret millionairre last night, 07/11/07 and thought it was great. It was great to see the right people get the help for what they do, and they were very dedicated people in what they do. Giving her money has helped and changed a lot of people’s lives for the better. I hope someone comes to where i live as we are in need of a lot of help.

what was the theme tune played on the secret millionaire show?

  103. Mirella says:

I cried at the end along with loads of others when Jill made a real difference in other people’s lives. How good it was to see people caring about others, which included Sabrina looking after the single mum’s and Linda and her husband looking after the children and giving them a hope and a future. It would be good to re visit these people in a few years time to see the progress and the difference that money made.
Well done to Channel 4 and to the secret millionaires.

This is the second week I have watched this programme The Secret Millionaire, and I think it is the best thing on TV at present.

The affluent people in Society e.g. Rich films stars, musicians can learns at lot from this programme. The Rich Rap Artists in the USA who spent a lot of their wealth on extravagant past time should really watch this programme.

Have just caught up with your programme and what a change from the drivel tv churns out. You have a wise head on your youthful shoulders and I salute you. Such opportunities never came my way in the handwritten before tv era.
I join others who have always maintained that the media do youth a grave injustice in trumpeting their diversions from the straight and narrow and fail to applaud their acheivements. So many young people are playing in bands/orchestras- sports and helping in the community but never get acknowledged. Those young friends you met in Hackney and those elsewhere all have good points and virtues that can be spotted and encouraged if we spend the time with them.
I wish you every success in your future and perhaps one day your attention will move up the ladder to struggling older people.
