The Voice UK: Will.i.am shocked when chat show guest says she’s pleased to meet him because he’s black!
When The Voice UK coach Will.i.am met with actress Miriam Margolyes on the set of Graham Norton’s chat show recently, he was reportedly left “speechless” when 71 year old Miriam told him she was pleased to meet him because he’s black!
Miriam told Will, “I‘m just fascinated by you. Unfortunately I don’t know many black people.
“We don’t get to meet across the colour line much except in showbusiness and that’s what’s so nice.”
The Sun’s TV Biz adds, “Will.i.am appeared taken aback by the bizarre comment and was left speechless for five minutes.”
It seems that Will’s fellow guest, comedian Greg Davies, “desperately tried to restore the atmosphere” by saying: “It’s exotic…”
Host Graham said, “It’s lovely, Miriam, you’re right.”
But Miriam – who’s starred in Blackadder, The Life and Loves of a She-Devil and Martin Scorsese’s The Age of Innocence – didn’t seem to realize she’d made something of a faux pas and added, “I don’t know much about rappers, you’re the first one I’ve actually talked to.
“I was in the musical Wicked and I met a lot of black people and I liked them a lot.”
A bemused Will replied, “And I’m a black guy. I’m the first rapper and black guy you’ve kicked it with.”
An audience member said: “Will.i.am was shocked.”
I wonder if they’re going to edit that out or keep it in the show? It’ll be interesting to find out!

They kept it. It was on last night. She didn’t mean it in a racist way and Will.i.am seen the funny side of it. They had a good laugh at her expense later when she said she was a lesbian anyway.
Miriam is evidently misunderstood. Let’s see – she doesn’t meet black people, has never met a rapper, asks if they have heard of Jews, and pretends not to know Prince William, then says she once did a favour for a soldier up a tree.
Has Britain become so humourless that we no longer get people like her?
Miriam was really good fun for the programme and I don’t think Will I am was shocked at all.
What was apparent with the programme is the difference between a true artist and thespian and someone whose skills are only popular because it is the age of rap.
Also apparent was the age difference and background of the two main guests Miriam and Will.
The comedian whoever he was Greg Davies I think tried to balance the programme out but failed abysmally.
Will is obviously keen to promote his charitable actions and this albeit a serious matter for Will was obviously another main point of the show. PR for charitable acts is unheard of in the right circles but the show continued to allow Will to seek glory.
Why something should always appear bigger and better because its a well known person instead of John Brown and Joe Soap beats me.
