The Only Way Is Essex star Jessica Wright has come under heavy criticism from anti-drug campaigns after posting a picture of herself with a balloon filled with nitrous oxide gas, or as it is more commonly known “hippy crack”!
Despite nitrous oxide gas, or laughing gas to use another term for it, not actually being illegal its effects can be deadly, causing brain damage or worse from one hit, and has become a favourite way for festival goers to get high.
Jess posted the picture of herself with a balloon in her mouth on social networking site Twitter which drug organisations have slammed as being “worrying”!
Stephen Ream, director of Re-Solv, said: “Misuse of nitrous oxide has resulted in a number of deaths in the UK, and it should not be seen as harmless fun.
“It is responsible for 16 deaths in the UK between 2006 and 2009, and 52 since 1971.
“It is very disappointing to see Jess Wright promoting such a dangerous activity to her young Twitter followers.”
The pictures, of which some included her on-off boyfriend and co-star Ricky Rayment, were taken at the High Definition music festival in Ilford, Essex, ten days ago, and were posted along with the caption:
“Balloons at HD fest! X.”
To which one of her followers replied: “buzzing much? Haha.”
Jess isn’t the first celebrity lately to hit the headlines in connection with “hippy crack”, which is still illegal to sell despite being legal to take – both Prince Harry and Coronation Street star Michelle Keegan (who is going out with Jess’ brother Mark) have been linked to the drug which is said to have a similar effect as crack cocaine.
A spokesperson for Jess declined to comment to The Sun newspaper with regards to this report.
The Only Way Is Essex concludes its current series tonight at 10pm on ITV2/ITV2 HD.
