After nearly two weeks of Twitter rants and tantrums from its stars, producers at The Only Way Is Essex have hinted that a big re-vamp on the show is in order to curb this sort of thing from happening again.
Fans of the hit ITV2 reality show will know how in the last two weeks, two of TOWIE’s biggest stars, Lucy Mecklenburgh and her partner Mario Falcone have launched into a full on defensive via social networking site, Twitter, hitting back at producers on the show for staging rows between them, and getting other cast members to lie about them to make the scenes more dramatic.
It all began when new Sugar Hut Hunnie Amy Broadbent confronted Lucy in the night club toilets claiming to have “done stuff” with Mario whilst he was in Manchester last September.
This, backed by confirmation from Lil Chris and his brother Ben as being true, lead Lucy to temporarily move out of the flat she shared with Mario until several other people came forward with proof that the incident never happened at all.
Since then Mario and Lucy have reconciled but, as the episode showing this was being broadcast on ITV2 both Mario and Lucy took to Twitter to voice their anger at the show, claiming that certain people were lying for fame and that Coronation Street was more real than TOWIE.
Since then it has been widely suggested that the pair, who broke off their engagement last year, were on the verge of quitting the show as a pre-emptive strike fearing they were about to be sacked.
Meanwhile, whilst all this was going on show original Mick Norcross sensationally quit, angry over the same scenes which he claims were bad for business for The Sugar Hut, especially when members of his staff were being abused by cast members.
A Spokesperson for TOWIE confirmed to us that the star had indeed left after demanding too much directional power, which the show was not prepared to grant him, and had also refused for any more filming to take place in his club.
Meanwhile another spokesperson at the time of all this insisted that TOWIE producers were not in the wrong, stating:
“Producers maintain a constant dialogue with the cast throughout the series to find what is happening in their lives and then put the cast in situations to allow these stories to play out.”
However now a show insider is reported as saying that a big change is on the cards to ensure this sort of thing doesn’t happen again, explaining:
“It’s safe to say that set is not a happy place at the moment and there is talk of a major revamp if this kind of thing carries on.”
