Shipwrecked 2007 Starts Second Racism Row For Channel 4
Channel 4’s newest reality show, Shipwrecked sparked another race row on Sunday night when 18-year-old contestant Lucy Buchanan told fellow contestants she supported slavery and described blacks as “really bad”.
She said: “I’m for the British Empire and things. I’m for slavery, but that’s never going to come back,” and added that she didn’t know many black people but “from what I have seen they are really bad”.
When another contestant said she did not like racists, Buchanan replied: “I’m afraid you have one here.”
Lucy’s remarks have come hot on the heels of a huge race row involving Channel 4’s Celebrity Big Brother, a row which hit the global stage with a bang last week.
A spokeswoman for Channel 4 has defended Buchanan’s remarks, saying: “When Lucy airs her opinions they are immediately criticised [by the other contestants]. Those who continue to watch ‘Shipwrecked’ will see Lucy’s views change.”
Ofcom has confirmed it is now looking into complaints made about Sunday night’s ‘Shipwrecked’, which was the first episode of the new series.

i think danielle is right why should we have to share our country with such different cultures i mean most of them dont even work i think its sick!
yes and i think its terrible how this country just lets whoever in i mean in austrailia u actaully have to be working for a living before you can imigrate but i spose if we do imigrate then there follow us!
I think you are both disgusting and out of order. Elizabeth where do you get your facts from? Yeah not all people from others cultures work for a living but they dont speak for everybody who is part of their culture. personally i blame the welfare system who makes it to easy for these people who chose not to work, not have to. I think you are highly arrogant and ignorant and obviously under educated. It people like you who let down the british nation and its a shame people like you are still around, I that is sick.
I think it is funny that the top 2 comments are so jaded, the economic wealth that people from other countries give to our country is more than apparent. The fact that if you look at the true facts BRITISH PEOPLE too lazy too work, and if they do they do not work hard enough are the ones we are really supporting. the welfare system is outdated and promotes this laziness, but the fact that more money is spent on our own people than any other country. So put down your special brew ladies and go to work.
Aside from the wrk issue, i think political correctness is a joke! we cant celebrate xmas in our own country because it offends other religions? If thats the case they shud go back to their own country. I have no problem with people of other ethnicities coming to England as long as theyre integrating into society but they dont. They have their own little communites within cities, some of which arent even safe for a white person to go into – in their own country!
Wow, there are some prety disturbing views expressed here. Firstly, I think you’re victims of our tabloid culture. Your assertion that most immigrants dont work, does not match up with the amount of immigrants I see doing agency work. These are low paid, often very monotonous jobs. If they didnt do these jobs, no one would, the agency I work for told me that they wish more english people would apply for the work, but they dont and the agnecy are grateful for people willing to work hard.
I was also on benefits recently until I found work, and the reports in the media about long queues of immigrants collecting benefits cheques also baffled me as I saw not one immigrant in the couple of months I claimed my benefits. And yes, I live in an area with one of the largest immigrant populations in the country.
On the political correctness issue; Nobody stops you celebrating christmas. you can go to church, you can say happy christmas to people, you can erect a tree and decorate it, you can give and receive presents. Are you really bothered if some cashier at a grocery store says happy holidays instead of happy christmas? That is very petty.
Well, I missed the first episode, but the British Empire was a tyranny and has led to untold suffering for many nations and peoples that continue right up to today.
Yet that said Britain does suffer from – a largely unreported – amount of racial violence against whites by non-whites.
The young lady is only 18 and hopefully she has a long time to develop and learn. Saying that, if we live in a democracy then she has every right to say she doesn’t like blacks.
Tabloid culture?
I guess you don’t live in London… If you did then your views would be very different. I live in Wembley and trust me I do not need to read the newspapers to tell me what society it thinking and how the British values have devalued and now seem to stand for nothing. The most extensive assessment of migration ever produced shows immigrants now comprise a quarter of London’s population and in my area “Wembley” 80% of residents are immigrants.
In my street I have tried to speak to my neighbours, like we use to do in the early 80’s but now no one wants to no. Even at my Daughters school the (Asians – Polish – Somalian’s – Algerians – Cosovians and now Romanians) stand in their own groups not socialising with anyone else. In my Daughters class she is the only white English girl out of a class of 40 children. So don’t patronise people for expressing their views. This country is loosing its culture, identity and its values.
My Grandparents and uncles fought in both wars for what? I do not see this as racist and it is most defiantly not about colour. Immigrants are here abusing our system and our way of life and to add insult to injury we now have the Romanian refugees here and they are too in Wembley. And for the record, the most racialist, aggressive arrogant people that have (for some reason) a massive chip on their shoulders that I have come across are the black people. I have seen and witnessed and have been a victim to this and so have my friends & their families.
I have read every post on here so far and I am slightly confused. I understand and agree with alot of the points made and disagree with a few as well. But what I don’t know is how everyone actually feels about people from other races. We’re all pissed off with the countless immigrants that pile in to England and claim benefits. But do we actually dislike them?? The last comment was about black people and as a black person I would like to know what people think.
By the way, I work, consider myself English/British and haven’t a racist bone in my body. So as a young, black male does anyone have a problem with me??
Living in London, and London being one of the most culturally mixed cities in the world, it amazes me (in a bad way) that some white English people still have such racist views… My parents immigrated to England a few years ago from eastern Europe, and worked hard for what they have- a big house in Richmond two cars, big business and being able to pay for their children’s education. Funny enough, my father is on over £70.000 a year and my mother is an established name in the media and art industry, which is more than most people who have posted their view on here, being the core blonde, blue eyed people have achieved in their whole lifetime of living in this country. If your child gets bullied in a multi-racial school, think of it as your own fault for not bringing your daughter up in a way where she can not communicate with people of other races, why? because she was brought up by a racist parent. These views only show lack of education, I am currently in my second year of uni, and NO ONE I have come across is racist, white people attend afro-Caribbean events, because they appreciate different cultures. Further more, what goes around, comes around people, all these racist people will one day end up with mix race grandchildren! As for the girl on Shipwrecked, we can all see that she is now finding it pretty hard to be accepted in either of the groups in the show- that speaks for itself. Good day, off you go to sign on at the Job Centre!
[...] The people rushed to sign the petition after Shipwrecked contestant Lucy Buchanan was shown remarking that black people should be “reinslaved.” [...]
I find it amazing that white british people are always being accuse of being racist, when our country has given refuge to alot of foreigners, the odd white person expresses their own personal view and all of a sudden all white people are racist, but when people we have given refuge to in our country start disrespecting our cultures and protesting about christians with signs up sayin anyone who doesnt beleive in “Allah” should be killed were told that not all foreigers are the same. So why assume that all white people are racist when the likes of Jade goody and this Lucy Buchanan express their oppinions ( of which are probably just being expressed to boost ratings) I think we need to get things in perspective, we are given refuge to some people who are racist towards us and want to cripple british society. There are areas round here that white people cant go down, but blacks are made welcome round our area so who really are the racists.
It is racist to assume only white people can be racist. Why do we never see headlines when a coloured person attacks a white person “racial attack”?
Frankly, anyone who thinks slavery can be a good thing in any situation, is not worth the time of day. Slavery is one of the most disgusting practices so widely upheld for so long in history.
I don’t think Lucy (or Jade Goody) is actively racist, they are just desperately ignorant (if that’s a better thing) and if they had any sense they would be ashamed to hear themselves back.
It’s depressing to think a uni student would have such a closed mind.
Idiot girl.
julia darling it’s Black not coloured!!!!
They need to put some black people or asian people or another mixed raced person on the island. Shipwrecked is so White this year ists more interesting when u have different cultures/colours on tv programs (Big Bro the Makose Saskia Kamal Kinga year) -it reflects big citys more. |Lucy’s views havent really been tested theres only one Mixed raced guy in the show and he’s a rich kid (which she related too)U can still be a racist or ignorant about race and want to date some1 from a diff race…(eg Cheryl Fookin Tweedy) We are here we want to be reflected!! its 2007!
Hx
