One Direction singer Harry Styles is one of those people who seems to have it all; talent, looks, an easy charm and total confidence.
And though his former band mate Zayn Malik has many of those same attributes, he has made no secret of it that confidence and feeling comfortable in his own skin are not things that come easily to him…
Quite the opposite in fact, and since leaving One Direction, Zayn has spoken candidly about his ongoing battles with anxiety and depression which have been so debilitating that he’s had to cancel at least two scheduled live performances.
However, Harry Styles and Zayn Malik both had similar starts in life; both were particularly close to their mothers and siblings, both shot to fame after appearing on X Factor and having been rejected as solo singers and both were later chosen to be members of One Direction…
Though while Harry blossomed during his time in One Direction, and without question grew ever-more confident, Zayn – as we can see now with the benefit of hindsight – shrank away and had to put on his ‘game face’ to get on the stage.
And while being one of five facilitated that to a large extent, and meant that Zayn could perhaps hide his true feelings while on-stage, when it came time to go out there alone, Zayn obviously felt exposed and vulnerable…
However, as mentioned above, in addition to being talented, charming and blessed in the good looks department like Harry Styles is, Zayn Malik is also as gentlemanly as Harry is. And as an interesting article on Inquistr today points out, in his autobiography, Zayn could have ‘bashed’ One Direction and he could have likewise spilled lots of beans over his failed romance with Little Mix singer Perrie Edwards.
But he didn’t, and that speaks volumes about his good character.
Yes he did of course make mention of One Direction and of Perrie, but we have absolutely no doubt he could have said a lot, lot more and been very scathing about all manner of issues had he wished to.
And let’s face it, doing so would probably have seen his book sell millions more copies, because though we might never admit it, we all love behind the scenes salacious goss.
But anyway, back to the article I mentioned, and the author points out that on the day of Harry’s X Factor audition, he was probably “up at dawn” raring to go. Zayn on the other hand had to be nagged at by his mother to get out of bed in time to get to the audition.
Of that, Zayn wrote in his book, “I always tell the story as if I was just being lazy.
“But actually I know deep down I was grappling with crippling nerves. That’s something I have always struggled with.
“I was never that overconfident, performing kid who wants to sing for everyone.”
The article adds, “Harry Styles adored being on stage with One Direction, perhaps as much as Zayn Malik was anxious about it.
“The One Direction stage was totally different for Harry Styles than it was for Zayn Malik.”
It really is very interesting how the experience of being in the same band, who were put together on the same show, was so profoundly different for two of its singers isn’t it?
