In the second of two episodes of Coronation Street last night, viewers were left horrified when Ken Barlow suffered what appears to have been a massive stroke.

The shock scenes saw Ken collapsing as he was about to walk out of the door to get into a taxi headed for the airport…

Ken had, on a whim, booked himself a longed for trip around Europe’s most iconic cultural hotspots, but sadly, the only place he’s now headed for is a hospital ward.

But the big question is, will Ken survive?

Well, fortunately for Ken, his son Peter – a role played by Chris Gascoyne – was there to call an ambulance, so hopefully, Ken will receive treatment quickly…

However, we do know that over the next few weeks, Ken’s worried family are going to gather round him, and that will see his son Daniel and grandson Adam returning to the cobbles.

Are they all there to say goodbye to Ken?

Well, Coronation Street bosses aren’t giving away too much about the outcome of the storyline…

But Bill Roache, who of course plays Ken – and is the only remaining member of the cast who starred in the very first episode – has been talking about his character’s fate in an interview with the Mirror.

He said, “When I found out about the storyline, I didn’t feel paranoid about my health, but I did feel paranoid about my job!

“The first thing I asked was ‘do I get better?’.”

And despite being 84-years old, Bill added that he has no plans to retire from the show, saying, “It would be good to be the first centenarian actor still in a soap!”

But back to Ken’s stroke storyline, and Bill revealed that one of his main concerns about tackling the emotive plot was that his performances should be authentic and realistic…

So to help ensure they would be, Coronation Street bosses called in Manchester University’s “stroke expert” Pippa Tyrrell, with whom Bill has worked closely.

He said, “I wanted to know about the onset. She said it was rapid…

“We did have some words after the stroke but she said ‘no, you can’t speak’. So I thought, if I bite my tongue and then try to talk like that…

“And Pippa said ‘perfect’.”

What did you think of last night’s shocking Ken Barlow scenes?

We thought it was truly brilliant acting, and can’t wait to see how the storyline plays out on upcoming episodes of Coronation Street!
