Soapstar Superstar: Where Are they Now?
Antony Cotton has won Soapstar Superstar 2007, but what will that mean for him and his career. people expected great things from last years winner Richard Fleeshman, but most of his musical plans have fallen through, leaving Richard considering a return to Coronation Street.
Today METRO has a great article on the contestants from last years Soapstar Superstar series. It details what the celebrities are doing now, and whether or not the show made a difference to their careers.
The one success story seems to be Lee Otway, according to his website, Soapstar judge Billy Sammeth gave Lee a record contract and he is apparently releasing a track called Don’t It Mean A Thing imminently.

Lovely to read a follow up of last years Soapstar superstars contestants. It must be a lot easier to do this than to actually follow the careers of say X factor contestants or pop idol, as whislt the TV actors and actresses already have careers to chase up or build upon they have a good starting point.
In many ways there careers don’t need any more building up as Soap stars are already in the top earners catergory for home entertainment from there TV acting roles. 32k and upwards for a Corrie EAstenders Emerdale etc even more for the foreign imports of soap dramas.

Richard Fleeshman has been taking his time as he is a serious musician, a great talent and wants to be more than a 17 year old novelty. Can’t wait for his first album (which will be his own songs and not an album of covers.)

i agree.Richard Fleeshman could have had an album out in the the first few months after Soapstar Superstar last year but he didn’t want that. He’s taking things slowly having turned down so many offers. When he releases an album, it will be worth waitng for, he’s an amazing talent.

There is a serious problem in the entertainment and music industry if a possible artist turns down real work offers or contracts they won’t come again, and the reason why they won’t come again is due to the fact that we have a saturation of good to excellent possible artists qualifying as musicians and singers graduating from the music schools and academies every year, not necessarily soap actors. The plight of the actor is generally that of a government artist. So even here any offers should be grabbed at.
What will eventually happen now is that Richard will have to finance his own recording time and push it from scratch. This will mean the building up of a live and buying fan base, this will mean getting radio air time, this will mean being his own publicity machine. All in all a very difficult and costly task.
Recording company engineers do not come free of charge and the price can vary from studio to studio for time. So the fact that Richard as young as he is has turned down so much already could well be a mistake. A mistake which he could regret for the rest of his life. Also a damned shame because I do believe this young man is very talented in a similar fashion to Jamie Cullum.
In actual fact Jamie Cullums marketing deal was to the value of a million pounds, it included venue promotion a TV video advert for his latest disc, posters, promo music to get air time, a television chat show, he was given a chance to showcase his talent with MICHAEL PARKINSON who adores JAZZ, a photoshoot and one or two more things. This package was seperate from the recording package of time, engineers, session musicians, CD cover design etc. All those things covered between the floor:-lowest amount of expense involved in the production of a master disc and a numbered run inclusive of the costs of ‘free music’ which is not free at all from source, and the ceiling. The maximum cost a recording company is willing to spend on an artist which is inclusive of the payment of record company advances to the said artist(s) and distribution.
No artist should ever look a gift horse in the face and walk away.
There is no shame in doing covers, there is nothing wrong in being given the chance to do covers, at least it is better than nothing at all. It is false pride to turn it down.

Well, thankfully Sir Elton John thinks Richard was quite right to take his time and not waste his talent on a quick album of covers as he’s invited Richard to tour with him on his UK stadium tour.(and in Germany)
Well done Richard!!!
