Katya Virshilas axed from Strictly Come Dancing 2012 – but James Jordan survives!

Katya Virshilas

Katya Virshilas has reportedly been axed from this year’s series of Strictly Come Dancing.

The Lithuanian-Canadian dancer and actress – who also worked on So You Think You Can Dance – has starred on the BBC show since 2009 and so far, has partnered Dan Lobb, Gavin Henson and cricket star Phil Tufnell. However, it has been reported today that bosses have decided to axe her from the 2012 lineup, as they want to add some new blood to the series.

It was expected that male pro James Jordan and his wife Ola would also be sakced as part of the shakeup, but at a meeting with executives last week it was reportedly decided that both would continue to partner celebrities later this year.

James rowed on air last year with both Craig Revel Horwood and head judge Len Goodman, so expect sparks to fly in a few months time when he comes face to face with the panel once more.

New producers Glenn Coomber and Andrea Hamilton made the final decision and an insider told The Sun:

“Glen and Andrea wanted to meet the dancers and hear why they wanted to do this year’s show.

“They always knew they wanted to bring in fresh talent but it was about deciding who would have have to make way and they decided to give Katya the boot.

“She is not as high profile as some of the other female dancers, although it was a close call and it was nothing personal against her.

“Producers are excited about the new dancer, who they hope will shake up the show and keep the other professionals on their toes.

“All the other dancers are back, including James, who many thought might be axed because of his row with Craig.

“But producers want as much drama as possible this year and bringing James back to face Craig could provide that.”

I agree with Katya being axed. She doesn’t have the presence as a dancer that the others do. It also seemed it was always more about herself than the dancer she partnered.

Just shows again how dim the management of BBC is to axe Katya. Everyone we know says she was the best and brightest star on Strictly
If the power had failed in the studio her smile was enough to light up the place.

Not that bothered about James Jordan being axed but I am glad that Ola is still there, his attitude could have lost them both their jobs

i could not agree more, Katya has this beautiful presence about her, and a smile im sure shined brighter than the glitterball. She deserved at least a chance to get to the final. She at least deserved one good partner before her cut from the show. I think the producers who made the decision will realise what a ridiculous mistake they’ve made when she’s taking over the world with her acting career (she’s said on Twitter she’d like to get back into it), and with her recent marriage and of course her tour with Pasha this year, she’s been in the limelight a lot. And let’s not forget she was in the film Take The Lead, has worked with JLO, Richard Geare ect.
the BBC do not realise what they’ve lost. their movie star with the killer smile. she will be missed
