Strictly Come Dancing 2012: Fans HATE the new theme tune! Do you? And Sid Owen says of training, “I’m doing alright with the steps so far”
As we reported last week, when the BBC uploaded a short sneak peek listen to Strictly Come Dancing’s new theme tune, fans of the show immediately hated it…
And days later, they’re STILL hating it, and inundating forums and blogs about the show with complaints over what one viewer branded the “so Butlins” singing.
It’s the first time in the show’s history that words and the singing of them have been added to the iconic theme tune, and the lyrics include, “Want to feel your body close to mine, kiss your lips that taste like wine”, and “shake your body”.
As we saw during last Saturday’s launch show, the new tune played as the pro-dancers waltzed into the studio to learn which celebrity contestant they were to be paired with this series.
And even as the first few seconds played, fans immediately expressed their distaste at the “tacky” new tune…
One viewer wrote, “Stop this. Now BBC!!!!” while another added, “Are you serious? This makes me incredibly sad. Leave it as it has always been. Please.”
SCD fan Natalie Dun remarked, “It isn’t the Strictly theme that I know? And love therefore, I’m not a fan.
“While I appreciate the vocalists, it feels wrong to have them covering the main theme.”
Other comments included, “They have ruined this,” and “If it ain’t broke why fix it.”
And on another forum, a fan commented, “Gawd! It’s so Butlins!”
But there were a few viewers – though I have to say, they’re in the minority – who thought the new theme tune wasn’t that big a deal…
One wrote, “Oh, I don’t know why people are complaining. The vocals add a contemporary edge and are essential to keeping the show current yet still retaining an urbane feel.
“It is important to remind people that the show is about dancing. Yes, it’s in the title, but some people might forget that.”
And on Twitter, a fan remarked, “Excited the Strictly theme now has words. Let’s go dancin’ dum dum dum.
“Can sing along now, like with The Sweeney.”
However, last night a BBC rep said the corporation hadn’t received any official complaints from viewers.
Here’s a quick reminder of the tune…
So dear readers, what do YOU think of the revamped tune? Hip and happening and generally ok? Or supermarket/elevator session singing which has ruined a perfectly good theme tune?
While you’re thinking on that, the Daily Mirror today reports that SCD contestant Sid Owen has revealed that because he had “nothing to lose” by starring on the show, he’s really excited for the live broadcasts to get underway in October.
First, of why he joined the show this year, Sid – who of course formerly starred in EastEnders as Ricky Butcher – said, “I’ve been toying with the idea for a few years now.
“Everyone I’ve spoken to has said, ‘Don’t be silly, don’t do it because you’ve got two left feet and you can’t dance’…
“My ex-partner told me that too, and whatever she tells me not to do, I want to do.”
He added, “I’m really excited and looking forward to it because I’ve got nothing to lose.
“Hopefully I will become a dancer by the end of it. I’m going to work hard.
“I think that’s the key so we’ll see what happens. I’m doing all right with the steps so far.”
He also revealed that he’s enjoyed meeting his fellow celebrity contestants and added, “Everyone seems really laid-back and having a laugh.
“It’s been great to see the Olympians. Hats off to them for doing this.”
Aww I hope he does well – I’ve always liked Sid. Are you excited for the live shows to start? Even with the pants theme tune?
