Half of the class of Strictly Come Dancing 2013 took the dance floor this evening for the first time, and among the celebrities was singer/songwriter Sophie Ellis-Bextor and Brendan Cole.

Sophie and Brendan performed the waltz to Moon River by Audrey Hepburn. She danced the Jive beautifully and it was very serene, which the judges seemed to agree with.

“A big part of ballroom is about the chemistry with your partner. That doesn’t come easy to me as the only man I’ve touched to now is my husband. Brendan is a very nice man but he is not my husband,” Sophie said.

“With this Waltz we want sophisticated, beautiful and elegant,” Brendan said.

Sophie added that being elegant does not come natural to her.

Sophie has been being dedicated over the past couple of days as she’s been putting more rehearsal time in to perfect her dance. However, she traded Brendan in for a nekkid Barbie doll at home! I’m not sure that will have helped…

The good thing is that she didn’t cause ahem… Murder on the Dance Floor. But, I’m sure by the series’ end, she’ll have wanted to murder a certain judge.

Bruno Tonioli told the pair: “I could really sense the aura of sophistication, so Audrey Hepburn. What I liked was when you took the musical phrasing. It was beautiful”.

Darcey Bussell added: “It was beautiful. lilting, flow, grace, elegance, you carried off. Beautiful. Thank you”.

“You head beautiful movement across the floor. You picked your feet up a bit but the beauty of the dance was gorgeous”,” Len Goodman told them

Craig Revel Horwood added: “Your top line is letting you down. That would have been beautiful if you didn’t ruin it”.

Sophie and Brendan received a combined score of 28 with a 7 from Craig, a 7 from Darcey, a 7 from Len Goodman and a 7 from Bruno.

Speaking about her first live dance of the series, Sophie said: “I was trying to remember all the notes and enjoy it. I don’t just want to get through it, I want to enjoy it as well”.

Strictly Come Dancing continues tomorrow evening at 7pm with the second live show of the series on BBC One/HD.
