Superstar: Andrew Lloyd Webber bans booze and nookie so finalists can “focus”
Yesterday, we reported that Superstar boss Andrew Lloyd Webber had ordered some of the chubby finalists to slim down if they hope to be in with a chance of landing the lead role in his remake of hit seventies musical, Jesus Christ Superstar.
And it seems he’s also ordered all the finalists to cut out the booze and nookie – banning the wannabes from having lady friends at the luxury house the finalists are sharing – in order to make them “focus” on their singing and performances on the live shows.
A show insider told the Sun, “For a show about finding the new Jesus Christ Superstar, some of the behaviour has been distinctly un-godly.”
The paper adds, “With the exception of teetotaller David Hunter, contestants had been indulging in boozy sessions after the live ITV1 shows and while watching the pre-recorded episodes…”
Apparently, Lloyd Webber issued the orders after several finalists turned up late, and hung over, for rehearsals.
The inside source added, “Alcohol has been banned for the rest of the series in a bid to get the boys to knuckle down.
“They love their beer and with them all living together they were getting into big drinking sessions.
“Some of them have been whingeing that they are being worked too hard on the nightly series and were hitting the bottle to relax, but this is not on.
“If they win, they will be working all hours on the arena show so they have to get used to it.”
Meanwhile, former The Voice hopeful Nathan James has reportedly raised a few eyebrows backstage with his “diva-like” behaviour.
Sources say he’s behaving as though he’s already landed the lead role, and one said, “Nathan is a loud character backstage and has been vocal in his opinions, and it hasn’t gone down well with some of the production staff.”
Jesus…

The judges have said what some of us already know. Such as there is a difference between being confident and being cocky/full of self/etc. Maybe it’s cuz his age or he is a rocker who knows. Still talented and a great rocker voice but with him only doing covers it starting to make me wonder is that all he is.. a realllly good covers artist. I want to see some original matieral and perhaps him forming a band and being focused on music and not broadway/theater stuff. He says he is a rocker he sounds like one but Idk I feel like he is more into the theater stuff than serious about a music career.
Good to see Andrew keeping them in line. It does need to be about the show and music.
It is a great show (apart from wooden Amanda and Dawn who is using the show as her own personal match.com)but I would prefer it I think if the show progressed week by week on the panel’s votes. Including the viewers it becomes unbalanced with some voting for their heart throbs, their neighbour etc Some good talent gets lost on the way and I believe, (I don’t know), that the end result is fixed in shows of this type. I think the panel fave in the best of the rest wins otherwise ALW will have the wrong actor in his shows. He knows what is required and what will work. The population just sees the very surface of the hard work.
They are worried that he is without doubt the best talent on the show and is most popular so now they are starting with the backstage criticm. This is always the case. He is spectacular and I cannot take my eyes off him when he performs. This is what a lead star should be.
Have to disagree with you there – he is eye catching yes but not for the role of Jesus by any stretch of the imagination. You are not supposed to vote for the guys that catch your eye lol, Dawn is there doing that aready and taking up a seat that someone with a bit of professionalism and common sense could have.
In reply to you, I am not talking about looks but about his magnetism on stage and his power when performing and that is what I would pay to see especially in this production. He has the softness when he wants and the best voice of the whole group and is always pitch perfect. So for me I dont care about looks, Nathan is the best.
Well I have to agree there Harold though I am still not convinced he has the right look for Jesus …. though I am open to changing my mind! He is certainly destined to WOW audience somewhere
That was such a stitch up. The commentary in the beginning about Nathan´s tweeting. I just knew they would arrange to get him in the bottom two and then Nathan outsang Roger by 100 per cent and still he kept Roger. The business of Dawn showing her body parts every night are so outrageous. I wish she would take Roger home and do what she wants with him. This is a contest not a dating competition.
For me the remaining contestants are not magnetic at all. I will watch but will not buy a ticket to see.
Harold – I am watching it now on the +1 so only just reached half way. The attack at the beginning I agree, was way out of line and if you read any of my posts on this or huffpost about this show, Dawn French is offering nothing to this show other than using it as her own tawdry dating post and im not that keen on Amanda either – nothing between the ears whatsoever. Insofar as Dawn taking Roger home – I would guess the guy, as big as he is, is bricking it on his way out of the building, hoping he can get away before Dawn catches him! She’s an embarassment!
Harold is right.
Unless I have suddenly developed the power of clairvoyancy, how was I able to predict exactly what would happen. Nathan did completely outsing creepy Roger.
Dawn French has nothing to offer here – really she should be the one booted off – followed by the ass licking crawler JD.
Yep I even wouldnt have picked Roger over Nathan – what happened was such a shock
ALW did seem to struggle with his decision though and I think his heart was with Nathan but his mind told him to go with Roger. ALW seemed very irritated with the fact Nathan was giving out the impression he had already won the competition. I think Nathan was his own worst enemy in this to be honest. He could well have won it, had he not been so obvious in expecting to win it.
Such a shame as that was an obvious fix last night. Although Nathan outsang Roger, he has rubbed Andrew up the wrong way and Andrew wanted him out.
Roger is totally wooden, but as he has been in an ALW production before its getting very obvious that Andrew is grooming him for the role. Never mind the fact that the other singers are better than him.
I feel very sorry for Nathan. Yes, he is a diva, but he has the stage presence and voice for the role. It would of fairer for Andrew to have said he couldn’t have worked with him, rather than putting it down to his performance. The tweeting comment was a low blow, and a sign that he had already made his mind up.
I won’t be watching any more and I won’t be buying a ticket
I have never seen a London show, cannot afford the cost of the tickets and travelling but it is on my bucket list. Roger was quite successful in the Lion King I hear but I just cannot see him in the Jesus role, even less than I could see Nathan. I liked Nathan, but his arrogance lost him the position he could well have won. I must have missed a show somewhere as a group of guys were missing when I watched last night and only 1 of my trio is still left in. I know ALW is experienced and knows what he is looking for but with the line up left now my interest in the further evolution of the show has died.
I think it’s fairly obvious and has been all along, that Nathan was just too much for AWL and Co. There have been many snidey remarks about ego right the way through and I think that they really only want a “yes” man who is too terrfified to do anything but what they are told to do and don’t question anything. It’s often the same in the world of arts and showbiz – the really talented are just that because they are individuals and can be a pain but that’s what makes them extraordinary rather than ordinary. I think Andrew just didn’t want any trouble backstage and didn’t want to be proved right by a contestant – he wants to be seen to be in control and choose himself but I agree, I think the people left are a bit pathetic and I’m not sure I’ll bother to watch it anymore – it’s now very much the same as all the other so-called talent shows!
It is the same old story.
They wanted boring Roger from the beginning, but noone would ever have heard of him.
This way, they get to promote him for 2 weeks and it is a double whammy because they make a fortune out of people ringing in to vote for contestants that have no chance of winning.
Prediction – tonight will see Roger and David inbottom 2 – andstodgy Roger will be saved.
Totally agree with you Amanda. Such a shame, I had high hopes for this show after the previous ones and this has rather fallen flat. I believe though we will see Nathan make it somewhere soon, its a case of watch this space.
I wish them all success to be honest, the performing arts career is like any other, very difficult to get a foothold on and even harder to stay on.
I personally think the race is now just between Rory and Ben myself …….
It should be, but ALW is clearly heavily invested in Dodgy Roger to win.
Well Billy boy, you were right!
So your prediction for tomorrow’s final?
I dont think Roger will win to be honest.
I thinkthey will. Ensure that Roger the Dodger wins – but it will then be clear that all these ALW programmes are “tainted”……
See you back here tomorrow then and see which of our predictions comes true
I hope you are right, but I fear that i will be.
Look forward to finding out tmw !!!
OMG – What is Amanda wearing tonight? The toilet roll in my mother-in-law’s closet is bare, poor thing!
The one good thing about this being the final tonight …. the last we shall see of Amanda for a while (please God!)
I am sure that they will find another vehicle for her “immense talents “!!
Is The Magic Roundabout still playing?
Hmmmm………..
My money is on Rory tonight!
Anyone but boring, boring Roger please!!!
A clever trick by Rory there. He clearly stopped singing, but his voice continued for a further 10 seconds.
He really dont miss a thing – or is it just the guy playin the tape ??
Yep I saw that ‘blip’ with Rory at the end of his piece – oh dear what a complete disappointment it all was. Neither Roger nor Rory won.
Caroline, I am glad I cannot afford the tickets but I hope the show will be worth your effort even less your little piece of Nathan…..I would quietly keep watch, that guy will turn up in something very very soon, you see!
Only just found this page after googling ‘Nathan in stitch up!’ My friend and I have had tickets booked for a couple of months now so had a vested interest in who would play Jesus. for me it had to be Nathan, just for his stage presence and voice. Monday night was so predictable and complete audience manipulation. I was raging as it worked just how ALW wanted.Just goes to show how little say in it the general public actually have. I think they want Ben to win and i think he will. Ive already paid my £70 now. Oh well.
A lot of people in the music business have big egos and I amsurprised if ALW has not worked with any of them.
Nathan. May have been over-confident – but the had the goods, with his voice, to back it up. They missed anopportunity there.
Yes, I tend to agree with you there
