Thousands queued in Nashville yesterday for the chance to audition, and the PA was on hand to gauge the crowd’s reaction to Simon being absent.

X Factor judge Simon Cowell reportedly made an extravagant gesture to all the staff of American Idol, as he moved on from the show.
