Dancing On Ice judge Jason Gardiner has admitted that he is glad Angela Rippon was eliminated from the show on Sunday.

ITV’s other ‘Mr Nasty’ didn’t enjoy Rippon’s debut routine and blasted her and partner Sean Rice for playing it too ‘safe’ on the ice. He also informed her that she didn’t emotionally connect to the moves at all.

Speaking to The Sun Jason added that the former newsreader left him ‘cold’, saying:

It’s good she’s gone. She’s so prim and proper and perfect in every way it leaves you cold and she won’t listen to criticism. Angela only hears what she wants to hear. Good riddance to old rubbish.

On TV presenter and actress Nadia Sawalha, who was also eliminated in week one, Gardiner speculated that she was glad to leave because she knew she was worse than all the other stars. he said:

It started off very well but when she was unassisted it looked like her legs were numb from the waist down. I think she knew it wasn’t on a level with everyone else’s performance and was happy to go.

Angela Rippon has hit back at Dancing On Ice judge Jason Gardiner, saying she would like to see him prove his worth on the rink.

The former newsreader was eliminated from the ITV show on Sunday night, after sharp tongued Gardiner blasted her routine calling it ‘safe’ and adding:

You are lacking any emotional connection with your choreography. You need to emotionally commit to what you are doing.

Retaliating against his criticisms, Angeal, 66, told The Sun:

“I challenge Jason to spend a few weeks with Sean to see if he can learn to do a three-turn, a choctaw, a camel turn, a mohawk.

“If he could do that routine then he could stand up and say, ‘It’s a safe routine’. Jason is a bit harsh. To say it was safe and dull was wrong. The music was very slow – if we’d had something with a beat it would have been more lively.”

Canadian pro Sean Rice, who had been partnered with Angela and trained her for the last two months added:

“Jason doesn’t know what he’s talking about. I said to Angela, ‘Who is this guy?’ Then I find out he’s not even a skater. He calls a mohawk a mohair – he knows nothing.

“We had one of the most technical programmes on the show. It’s the technique of skating. It might not have the biggest tricks but it was one of the most technical.”

“How many seasons has he been on for? And in six seasons he’s never skated? Don’t you think it would be great for the public to see him finally skate?”

Angela Rippon has admitted that was ‘disappointed’ with last night’s Dancing On Ice result.

The 66 year old was the eldest contestant on this year’s series of the ITV show and found herself eliminated on the first show, along with former Eastenders actrees Nadia Sawalha.

Angela had been partnered by Canadian professional skater Sean Rice – whose wife Joydene Higgins is paired with Lance Corporal Johnson Beharry – and speaking on This Morning she revealed that they had lots more tricks and moves she would have liked to display for the judges.

The former newsreader told Phillip and Holly:

I really am disappointed of course, but then anybody would be to be knocked out on the very first programme, when you’ve done all of that training for ten or twelve weeks.

People always use the term journey with regard to these type of programmes and it was like going on a journey. It was as if you got to Heathrow airport and discovered that the plane had been cancelled. You can’t go any further and so it was a huge disappointment because from the very beginning Sean – he’s such a wonderful teacher – he said I want to teach you how to skate and we had so many other things that we wanted to do.

That was a slow piece of music so we were slightly restricted in terms of what we could do to interpret that and I would have loved to have done something a bit more beaty. We certainly had things up our sleeve that we’d rehearsed and practised which were a bit different and I’ll now never get to do them which is a real shame.

Sean admitted that Angela was so keen and eager to learn, he was often forced to bring their rehearsal sessions to an end so that she didn’t tire herself out. He explained:

When we’re doing our things, it’s very important to do quality not quantity. So when we’re trying to push and push and push and get ready for the show, you don’t want to over train, you want to make sure you keep it within your limits and you don’t want to get overtired.

On whether she will continue to skate Angela added:

I enjoyed it enormously, I really did. I can actually go on the ice rink now and skate on my own which is the most wonderful feeling. Yes I think it probably is something that I’ll continue to do. It’s great exercise.

Angela Rippon looked quite wobbly when she first took to the ice tonight and we were nervous for both her and her partner before she even started her routine.

During her rehearsals Torvill and Dean were disappointed by the former newsreader’s slow progress and improvement and Canadian skater Sean Rice forced her to take breaks because she was getting tired and endangering herself on the ice.

This evening Angela and Sean skated to ‘At Last’. It was a slow moving routine, which was most likely supposed to be romantic and touching but Angela was so wobbly and stiff all at the same time, it made uncomfortable viewing. She does have a great attitude though and she looked great in her floaty white gown, so we’re hoping she makes it through this week and gets a chance to gain confidence on the rink.

Judges Comments:

Jason: 3 You are lacking any emotional connection with your choreography. You need to emotionally commit to what you are doing.

Emma: 3 I think I was actually going to give you a higher score but I saw a couple of trips and that put me off. All in all, I loved the performance though.

Robin: 5 There was a serenity about the performance, the hand, the legline was beautiful.

Angela Rippon is the oldest contestant to take part on this year’s Dancing On Ice but at 66 years old, she seems to be coping well with the show’s challenges.

The former newsreader has admitted that she’s had a few falls and tumbles on the rink but compared to Kerry Katona’s cracked ribs and Laura Hamilton’s lacerated leg, she is faring better than many of the other celebrities.

The 66 year old star told The Sun:

“I’ve tumbled over a few times, just mucking about, and I’ve got bruises and I ache in places I didn’t know I had. But fortunately I bounce so it’s OK.

“I’ve got enormous confidence in my partner. He’s Canadian, 6ft 3ins if not more, and built like a Canadian maple tree – absolutely solid. He makes me feel very safe.”

Angela also took time to deny rumours that she is a professionally trained dancer.

She said: “Everyone thinks I’m a dancer but I’m not. I went to ballet classes until I was 16 but that was 50 years ago and I haven’t danced since.

“But I’ve been around dancers a lot and you have a kind of muscle memory so you remember.”

Vanilla Ice, Kerry Katona and Angela Rippon will head up this week’s series six launch show, alongside war hero Johnson Beharry, TV presenter Jeff Brazier, former Coronation Street actor Steven Arnold, Nickelodeon presenter Laura Hamilton and TV star Nadia Sawalha.

The sixth series of Dancing On Ice returns this Sunday at 6.30pm on ITV1.

Former ‘Dancing On Ice’ guest judge Angela Rippon is rumoured to have signed up to compete on the ITV show next year.

The 66-year-old star – who had a stint on the ice panel last year while Robin Cousins was working at the Winter Olympics – will take part in the celebrity skating contest, though people are already objecting to her inclusion, arguing she has an unfair advantage over the other contestants.

A source told The Sun newspaper: “This is like judge Dannii Minogue competing on ‘The X Factor’ or Arlene Phillips on ‘Strictly Come Dancing’. She’s got an unfair advantage.”

Celebrities who are so far believed to have been signed up for the new show include 90s hip hop star Vanilla Ice, ex-Atomic Kitten singer Kerry Katona, ‘Loose Women’ host Denise Welch and wine expert Jilly Goolden.

Other stars who have been rumoured to be taking part include ‘Hollyoaks’ actress Jennifer Metcalfe, former Steps singer Faye Tozer, rugby legend Brian Moore, and TV personality Jeff Brazier.

It was so weird to see Angela Rippon out of her business suit and in a strippers getup on tonight’s Let’s Dance For Comic Relief!

Angela danced to Big Spender, with BIG hair and a tight sparkly and short dress that left very little to the imagination.

As a newsreader Angela has become a bit of a national institution and even though her dancing really wasn’t up to much she deserves a heap of respect just for giving it her best shot tonight.

Zoe Ball & Suggs, Dom Joly, sports stars Martin Offiah and Denise Lewis, The Bill actors Lisa Maxwell and Patrick Robinson, Fern Britton and Angela Rippon will all appear in the third heat of Let’s Dance For Comic Relief this Saturday night on BBC One.

Lisa Snowdon and Dara O’Briain will be guest panellists alongside head panellist Anton Du Beke.

In the final, Anton will be joined by guest panellists Denise Van Outen and Michael McIntyre who is back by popular demand.

The show, hosted by Claudia Winkleman and Steve Jones, will see the six acts perform iconic dance routines in a bid to wow viewers and win a place in next week’s spectacular final dance off.

Who goes through and who gets a chance to compete in the final will be down to the public phone votes and the panel.

The final will see two celebrity acts compete alongside Robert Webb, Dick & Dom, Keith Lemon & Paddy McGuinness and Jo Brand for their chance to be crowned the Let’s Dance For Comic Relief Champion on Saturday 14 March during Red Nose Day weekend.
