Annop Desai made it to the seventh week on last year’s American Idol and the 23 year old is now preparing to release his debut album.

The record titled “All is Fair” will hit the shelves on May 4 and the song above “My Name” will be his first single.

“It’s a pop record, but definitely influenced by a Bollywood feel,” Desai told People.

“‘My Name’ has a double meaning. On one hand, it’s a response to kids that used to make fun of my name when I was little. I wanted my first contribution to be something that said, ‘Hey, my name is now cool, not something to be ashamed of.’”

“It’s also about false bravado. Each song on the All is Fair album describes a mindset or a time in my life. ‘My Name’ is about going to a club and trying to act like a big deal. Really, that mentality stems from some lack of confidence, but I think we’ve all done it at some point.”

‘My Name’ can be downloaded from iTunes as of tomorrow and was cowritten by season 6 “American Idol” finalist Brandon Rogers.

Anoop Desai made it through to American Idol’s final 13 singers by the skin of his teeth and with performances like this he will be out sooner than he can say Michael Jackson.

For last nights live show Anoop chose to sing his favourite MJ song, ‘Beat It’ and the judges were unanimous in their criticism of his song choice.

Judges comments:

Paula: “When you pick a song, it is your gift to the world to show what you’ve got. I don’t think that this song did that. It is untouchable. Anything else sounds karaoke to me.”

Simon: “It was horrible. There was no aggression; it was very lightweight. It was like somebody trying to be like Michael Jackson, but failing.”

Randy: “You’ve got a little bit more than that. It didn’t work for me.”

Kara was disappointed by the lack of riffs and thinks Anoop missed an opportunity to show off his vocal skills. She said: “For the first time, I felt disconnected from you.”

American Idol finalist, Anoop Desai has admitted that he was genuinely shocked by the twist of last weeks show which saw him make the final group.

In the clip above you will see Anoop’s disappointment when he doesn’t make the final 12, but then Simon completely surprises him by announcing that the judges had decided to increase the number of the final group to 13, meaning that Anoop was through.

“It was the difference between having all your dreams dashed and then three seconds later, they’re alive again,” Desai told MTV. “It was a shock, it was a genuine shock for me. I’m just glad I’m still here.”

Anoop also revealed that he is uber excited about meeting Kanye West on this week’s show saying:

“Hopefully I’ll get to meet him and we can talk about some collaborations in the future,” he joked.

But Desai’s dream mentor would be Stevie Wonder, he said: “If Stevie Wonder came back, I would faint, because I think he’s the greatest musical mind that I’ve ever heard. That would be the ultimate.”

Yes you read the title right! Last night the American Idol judges twisted proceedings a little and at the end of the wild card round announced that this year, they were actually going to allow thirteen contestants through to the live finals rather than the usual twelve.

Anoop Desai, Jasmine Murray, Megan Corkrey and Matt Giraud will now join Jorge Nunez, Scott MacIntyre, Lil Rounds, Kris Allen, Adam Lambert, Allison Iraheta, Danny Gokey, Alexis Grace and Michael Sarver in next weeks first live show in the full size American Idol studio.

I think last night’s choice were all quite predictable and doubt that the judges made their decision on the spot. Each person who got through was definitely amongst the favourites in their original group and each has a massive fanbase out there in the real world, especially Anoop it would seem. Simon claimed that the decision to make the numbers up to thirteen was semi spontaneous, but I think it might just be the ‘shocker’ talked about by Fox execs at the beginning of the season.
