Avril Lavigne was a surprise guest on last night’s X Factor USA final.

The Canadian singer songwriter joined finalist Chris Rene on the stage for a one off duet, on her hit song ‘Complicated.’

It was a special night for the Californian trash collector, as not only was he vying for the $5 million prize money and a record deal with Simon Cowell, but he was also celebrating the fact that he has remained clean and sober for exactly eight months to the day.

Chris took to the stage first last night and started the performance and we have to admit, that at first we weren’t overly impressed with his vocals. There were definite tuning issues, which seemed related to the key which Avril had chosen.

However, things picked up when Lavigne took to the stage and as well as the improved vocals, we loved the whole matching leather jacket look the pair had going on.

After the performance, Avril praised Chris saying:

Chris is amazing, I think everyone should vote for him! He was really amazing coming in here today and he’s a dude…he definitely kicked ass!

She later took to Twitter and told her followers:

Vote for @MrChrisRene #xfactor everybody!!! We performed “Complicated” together tonight and he is RAD

JUDGES COMMENTS:

NICOLE SCHERZINGER:Well Christopher, it was a little shaky in the take off but you came out on top and I couldn’t help by by the end, your energy and the light around you is so flippin infectious…I love you Chris.

PAULA ABDUL: This competition isn’t about note for note, or being perfect, it’s about and energy that connects with an audience. You just sang with Avril and what a wonderful, current, feel good performance.

SIMON COWELL: Chris I think we are going to accept that all the artists are going to be a bit nervous, but when it kicked in and you rapped, felt your total joy and confidence to be here and that could be a record, well done!

L.A REID: You looked really at home with Avril. You guys looked like you are cut from the same cloth. That could be released tomorrow and be a number one hit.

Avril Lavigne seems to be attempting some sort of comeback at the minute.

It seems that we can’t read a gossip website this week without coming across her name and tonight, the Canadian singer showed up to perform on the Britain’s Got Talent live semi final.

The 26 year old (yes she really is that old!) gave a rendition of her recent single What The Hell, followed by an excerpt of her latest release Smile.

Did we like it? Well we’ve heard both tracks before and they are both incredibly catchy pop tunes, however, we don’t feel that she did either justice tonight.

Her voice sounded thin and really, given that she’s now approaching the big three zero, maybe it’s time for Avril to give up the angsty chick thing and move onto something a little more mature.

Ohhh those American Idol bosses are a canny lot. They drop the jibbering idiot judge (although possibly on a temporary basis) and fill her chair with some of America’s biggest celebrities and stars. Thats sure to pull them out of last year’s ratings slump.

The latest star reported to be taking on a judging stint alongside Simon and Co is ‘Skater Boy’ singer Avril Lavinge. According to EW.com, she will spend a full day critiquing auditionees for the show, as will ‘I Kissed a Girl’ singer Katy Perry.
