I didn’t expect much from Brian after last night’s wooden performance, so it was no shock to see him voted off the show tonight.

When told he was leaving, Brian said:

‘Its been absolutely fantastic, I’m sad that I’ve let Karen down, but I’ve enjoyed it so much.’

Karen added, ‘It’s always an honour to dance on Strictly Come Dancing, and dancing with Brian – I loved every second. I used to watch him as a teacher on Grange Hill, and never thought I’d end up being his teacher!’

“A lot of my fan base are grannies,” he says.

“Simon Gregson, who plays Steve McDonald on Corrie, got a photograph of me and stuck it on the Coronation Street board and underneath it he wrote Granny’s Crumpet!

“I was once involved in a situation at a big charity ball. I came down this staircase, and there were about 15 or 20 older ladies who just went, ‘There he is!’, and started running towards me! I had to run the other way!”

Although he has appeared in numerous shows since leaving the ITV soap, he will always be best remembered as murderer Hillman, who killed Maxine Peacock with a crowbar.

However, Richard hopes that we can put our loathing to one side while he trips the light fantastic on this years series of Strictly Come Dancing.

“There are a lot of people who still think I’ve got a crowbar in my trousers,” Richard told the Manchester Evening News. “Naturally I think it’s an opportunity for people to see the real me.

“This seems to be the best reality programme because it’s a real challenge, a lot of fun and all my family and friends seem to love it.”

Richard has been paired with Karen Hardy, who won last year’s series dancing with Mark Ramprakash. Does that mean he is set for big things on this years dance extravaganza……watch this space!

Brian’s acting career has spanned over 35 years, but it is for the role of serial killer Richard Hillman in Coronation Street that he is best known.

He has also appeared as Ozias Harding in ITV1′s Where the Heart Is and toured the UK and starred in the West End as the narrator in the musical The Rocky Horror Show.

In 2003, Brian won Best Actor, Best Exit and Villain Of The Year at the British Soap Awards. The same year he was also nominated for the Most Popular Actor at the National Television Awards.
