Cheeky Girl star Gabriela Irimia has spilled the beans on her ex-boyfriend Lembit Opik, saying he was a good lover but very controlling.

The former Lib Dem MP is currently competing in ITV’s I’m A Celebrity and was formerly engaged to the Transylvanian singer. They split two years ago, because Lembit wanted his woman to give up her showbiz career and allow him to concentrate on his politics.

Gabriela told Reveal magazine:

“Lembit is a very good lover. That I have to give him. He was very, very attentive. Painfully intense.”

But she added: “Over time, Lembit became increasingly controlling.

“He kept putting me off doing anything that could harm his reputation.

“I know he wanted me to stop being a Cheeky Girl.

“After we got engaged he became even more dominating.

“He would phone me up every day and talk for hours about what I’d done wrong, or about a story that said something negative about me.

“At first I tried to ignore it, but in the end I too started blaming my mum and shouting at her for the bad publicity, though she had done nothing wrong.”

The pair got engaged in 2008 but split just two months later. A few weeks after the split Gabriela miscarried their baby. She went on:

“The worst thing was that Lembit was calling me non-stop that day.

“He’d driven over from Wales and checked into a hotel around the corner and said he was desperate to sort things out.

“I didn’t know how to tell him that I was losing the baby.”

“Splitting from Lembit was one of the hardest things in my life.

She added: “Politics was his life, but it stressed him out so much. Showbiz suits him better.”

Former Pop Stars: The Rivals competitors, The Cheeky Girls have blasted X Factor’s John and Edward Grimes, saying that they will never have a career like them.

In an act of supreme hypocrisy, Monica told The Sun: “They’ll never have a song on the radio like us. Without all the dancers around them, John and Edward would not be so attractive. There is a lot of smoke and mirrors.

“Our fan base is much wider. Fans of all ages listen to our songs. They don’t even have a proper name.”

Gabriella said: “They can’t really sing – they’re totally out of tune. But they have the best stage set-up out of the whole show – the best outfits, dancers, lights, props…

“It draws all the attention from them, instead of focusing on the real talent and the real singing and dancing. It is not fair towards all the other acts.”

She added: “Please don’t compare us to the twins.

“They are not like us except that they’re biological twins. We have been performers since we were four.

“They’re not a novelty act, we’re a novelty act. A novelty act must have something new. They don’t.”

The girls added that they are backing single mum Stacey to win.

Gabriela said: “Stacey has the best voice and the best character. She’s definitely an original. She has so much personality.

“People are voting for the twins for fun. They should vote for the real talent. Vote for Stacey, the twins have had their moment.”

“We are the cheeky girls. You are the cheeky boys” are the infamous lyrics that shot Gabriela and Monica Irimia to fame as The Cheeky Girls, after an audition on TV show Popstars. Six years later they’re still going strong, and continuing LIVING’s ongoing mission to go behind closed doors to gain exclusive previously unseen access to the most entertaining, intriguing and often controversial celebrities, the first of the Living with… strand of celebrity one-offs moves in with The Cheeky Girls’ Monica and Gabriela this July, exclusively on LIVING. Shown in a truly new light, as well as with their Cheeky personas, the show reveals their day to day lives, unique sense of humours and general highs and lows of being a Cheeky Girl. It is an exclusive window into the world of ‘Cheeky’.

The show shadows these unique Transylvanians for a few weeks, seeing them for the first time at home as sisters, daughters, performers, women in search of love, and lust, and women still very much in touch with their Romanian roots, with the girls showing a clear fondness for Romanian traditions.

Monica and Gabriela Irimia were born on Halloween 1982 in Transylvania, Romania, and as their mother Margit says they are the “the second biggest export from Transylvania… after Dracula.” The show will feature Gabriela and Lembit Opik’s trip to Rome – where he recently proposed, celebrity events, the unique family relationships between mother and daughters and the step dad Ray, the engagement party, the humour they share and even Monica’s frustration at not having a boyfriend!

The hour-long observational documentary will also gain access to their charismatic and larger than life mother Margit and latest addition to the family; MP Lembit, Gabriela’s new fiancé. From the romance (and proposals) of Rome and the hilarity of Monica having taken home nits from a visit to Dracula’s castle to the after-effects of having suffered from anorexia and Cheeky sex drives, this home-life is one not to be missed…
