Cheryl Cole has reportedly been asked to return to the X Factor America judging panel.

The ‘Promise This’ hitmaker was thought to have been sacked from the new Fox show by Simon Cowell last month, however insiders claim she may be back in her seat as soon as next Wednesday, at New Jersey auditions, after the US TV network had a change of heart.

It is claimed that Cheryl is now planning to return to The States and reclaim her job, which was supposedly offered to Nicole Scherzinger, after Cowell managed to persuade Fox bosses to give her another chance.

An insider told The News Of The World: “This is the biggest surprise of the lot – Cheryl is back. Who could possibly have predicted this – it appeared that Simon had dumped Cheryl for good?

“But behind the scenes Simon has been wooing Cheryl.

“And key executives at Fox all realised they had made a big mistake. They have been watching the tapes of her at the American auditions and realising that she could be a huge star over there.”

We are particularly sceptical about this story and if proves to be true, and Cheryl does return, then it would seem there are no depths to which Simon Cowell would not sink if it meant extra publicity for one of his shows.

The whole thing is very reminiscent of the Louis Walsh sacking scandal of 2008. The Irish star was axed from The X Factor, replaced by American choreographer Brian Friedman and then dramatically rehired. Of course very few people believed that Louis had ever left the team then and it would seem that now, Simon is just resorting to old tricks, in a bid to whip up some headlines and keep his show in the public eye.

Fox executives have admitted that they are hoping Jennifer Lopez will return to judge on the 2012 season of the show.

The US TV network today confirmed that despite recent rumours, the reality TV series will return for an eleventh series in January next year. Chairman of entertainment Peter Rice also revealed that while Randy Jackson and Steve Tyler will be back, J-Lo is only signed into a “single year contract”.

However, Rice has already begun talks with Jennifer and is hoping she will return for a second run on the show. He said:

“She had a really fun time doing the show. We’ve loved having her on the show and we’re talking to her now about her schedule next year. Our hope and expectation is that she’ll return.”

Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler joined the lineup for the singing show at the start of the tenth season, after Simon Cowell, Kara DioGuardi and Ellen DeGeneres left the panel.

Since starring on Idol, Lopez has enjoyed a career resurgence. In January 2011, she released a new lead single titled “On the Floor” featuring Pitbull, it achieved worldwide success on the charts, including a top 10 debut on the Billboard Hot 100, giving the mum of two her first top ten on the chart since “All I Have” in 2003.

An ‘insider’ is quoted in the paper as saying, “Simon is really keen on bringing the X Factor to America as it has been such a hit in the UK.

“And he is convinced that the yanks will love Cheryl and Louis.

“He’s made no secret of the fact that he wants to expand his TV interests around the world and this is one of the first big ideas he’s got…

“It’s early days but he hopes to get it on air next year.”

However, the chances are, Simon won’t be on the show himself. Already worth an estimated £120 million, he’s about to embark on a new “one stop entertainment company” venture with billionaire Philip Greene who made his fortune in part by running Topshop.
