“Tonight,” said Brian to Ant and Dec, “you don’t have the A team, you have the gay team.”

Outlining the trial, Ant said the trial was called Pluck and Roll. “Three pens and seven ostriches, at the far end of the pen are six stars which you have to transfer the stars from the tubular maze to the end zone simultaneously. You need to transfer the stars together in eight minutes and, as an added inconvenience, you have to be inside the pens with the ostriches and no ostrich challenge would be complete without a suit of molasses and seeds which is sure to interest the ostriches.”

The plucky pair was also told that if just one of them wanted to get out of the challenge it would count for the pair of them and the trial would end.

George said: “We’re going to give it a try as Brian wants some ostrich feathers for his boa.”

George led Brian through the pens pushing the stars over the tubes while being attacked by the ostriches, who were keen to eat the seeds and molasses that had been spread over their shirt and trousers. They managed to move four of the stars past their feathered friends before the time was up, earning eight dinners for the 11 remaining celebrities.

Afterwards, George said: “We volunteered to do this and yes we did feel the responsibility and I must say whilst doing it I began to feel the pressure.  Knowing that Brian is coming up behind me we put a little pressure on me I must say but at the same time when I got a bit ahead of him I was concerned about Brian and wanted to help him out so it was give and take.  I think it was a good idea to work as a team.”

And Brian said: “Eight meals for 11 people is substantial so I’m so pleased.  George is such a hero.”

The two heroes returned to camp to applause. Simon said: “I wasn’t surprised they got eight stars whatsoever.  They’re both made of steel.”

Timmy asked if they had missed a star.  Brian replied: “I don’t think anybody would physically do three runs, which is what you needed to do in the time.”

Esther commented wryly: “As Brian pointed out, it would have been impossible to get more.  Men are interesting like that aren’t they?  Anyway I’m sure it would have been impossible for them to get more and eight is a superb total.”

With the public vote for I’m A Celebrity eliminations started, the stars last night had to decide between them who should do the daily Bushtucker Trial in order to win stars for meals.  A number of the Celebrities were yet to do a Trial and were keen to shine.

Joe Swash read instructions and told the celebrities that the Trial would “involve ostriches”. 

George Takei was keen to be involved.  “I’m one of those who hasn’t done a Trial and I think I can do this,” he said. 

Esther Rantzen agreed: “I think I’m exactly the same.  I would like to do it and I haven’t done a Trial.  We can do this.” 

And Brian Paddick also put himself forward. “I’m really keen to do it because I’ve never done a trial and I’m going stir crazy in here.”

It was David Van Day who took control and suggested that the groups should carefully consider who they nominated. “I think we should use our brains as well as our hearts here because it is a Trial and we have to eat so we do want some stars.”

Esther said: “He said we need stars as we need one young strong person and one old doddery one and obviously if I’d been there [with George] it would have been two old doddery.  I’m sure I could have done it.”

The group voted for George and Brian and they faced the ostriches to win food.

Before the Trial, George said: “I feel really alive for the first time and really love this and I’m excited and looking forward to it.  It’s an exciting one doing battle with a flock of ostriches and I think I can do it well.”

And Martina said: “If George’s age gets in the way, Brian is there to pick up the pieces.  I think George will more than hold his own.”

And Brian quipped: “George, this Trial is going to be perfect for us because we’re going to be covered in ostrich feathers.  No need for the boa.”

The former Eastenders and former Heroes actor kissed twice last night and campmates are beginning to wonder whats going on.

Swash told Takei: "Keep them thinking, Georgie boy, and give us a kiss. Keep them on their toes. They don’t need to know what’s going on between me and you, do they?"

The campers have all been warned to wee only in the ‘dunny’ as human urine attracts rats and then snakes who want to eat the rats, but it seems that George just couldn’t wait and last night he relieved himself behind the double decker bus.

I’m A Celeb medic Bob McCarron told The Sun: "I tell all the celebrities not to pee in the camp, but someone always disobeys.

"Rats love human urine and they are extremely attracted to it. They will come in and gather around the pee, which then attracts snakes who feast on the rats. It’s one of the worst things the contestants can do."

On tonight’s I’m A Celebrity, Home Camp had a conversation about sexuality. Brian Paddick told George Takei that ‘the first inter racial kiss (on television) was on Star Trek.’

George explained to Joe ‘I wanted to be an actor. You know, as an actor they find every reason to reject you. I led a double life. I dated girls – other actresses. But I had another life. But once I got comfortable with the Star Trek cast I would bring my friend to cast parties and wrap parties and I’d introduce him and they say, ok he’s George’s friend. But it was unspoken.’

Brian said ‘I came out publicly because I thought it would be good for the gay community to know there was a cop because there was a lot of animosity.’

Brian talked about how understanding his previous wife had been when he came out of the closet and Dani said ‘I think most women would rather their husbands came out the closet than say they’d been copping off with other women because they can’t compete with that.’

Brian agreed. ‘She said if it had been another woman she’d never have forgiven him.’

On the subject of Civil Partnerships and marriage Martina said ‘Where is the harm? Why do you care whether my partner has a penis or not because that’s the bottom line.’

Joe summed it up. ‘Look around this camp. You’ve got a head of police, a famous actor and one of the world’s best tennis players so it’s not like you can’t do things as good as a straight person. Shall we call it the camp camp?’

George landed at Brisbane airport yesterday, but instead of being met by a fleet of cars and team of security guards, Takei was left to wander around alone for thirty minutes without even a contact number to call.

George told reporters waiting at the airport: "I’ve been left wandering the airport for 30 minutes. They assured me there would be someone to meet me."

The actor, who also played Hiro’s dad in US hit Sci Fi TV show, Heroes, was asked if he was looking forward to taking part in the jungle show he said: "Not if it’s this shambolic."

The trouble started when some of the ‘talent’ realised that they were being paid five times less than their counterparts.

The Daily Mail has reported that former glamour model Nicola McLean, 24, is furious that her £7,500 wage is five times less than the £40,000 that 34-year-old rival Dani Behr is being paid.

And WAG Carly Zucker, is said to have sided with McLean as she is earning just £10,000, compared to Esther Ranzten’s £25,000. She threatened to walk off before she even started the show, but was persuaded to stay when the executives told her how much she could earn from magazine deals afterwards.

I don’t know why this useless pair are bothering complaining. In my mind they are lucky to have gotten on the show in the first place. It is after all titled ‘I’m A Celebrity, get Me Out Of Here.’ Not I’m an unknown wannabe get me out of here!

George Takei is earning only £20,000, a paltry amount when you consider how much he must have earned for his recent role in US Sci Fi TV show, Heroes and how many millions he has amassed from his time playing Mr Sulu in the original Star Trek series.

I think these girls should count their lucky stars and get on with their spray tans, teeth whitening and whatever other essential preparations they have lined up before they enter the jungle camp!

Best known for his roles as Mr Sulu in Star Trek and Hiro Nakamura’s father in Heroes, actor George Takei was born and bred in America and has never actually seen I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out Of Here!

George may be the oldest ever contestant in the series but he says that he is a very fit person but might struggle if he has to run due to a foot injury.

He says: “I am a physically fit person. I work out every day. I used to run marathons. The marathon that got me to stop was the London marathon. I did terribly at that one. That was in 1991. I had foot surgery so my doctors said I can’t run now – or should not run. I walk 45 minutes every morning.”

George says he hasn’t got a clue what he is letting himself in for, but just thinks an adventure in the jungle would be fun.

He says: “I’m American, so we don’t get your show here. I have never seen it. But I like challenges and from what I hear this is a survival in a rain forest program. I am willing to boldly go. I think it is going to be good fun—a trip to Australia and a rain forest.

“I do find being with nature and an understanding of nature gives you a new respect for it. I think our civilisation has been much too careless in acting as trustees of what we have been given. So I think by throwing myself into the primeval wild, we get a better appreciation and understanding of the issues of environmental conservation.”

George says he thinks he will be ok when it comes to eating things in the Bushtucker Trials – because he has already eaten live fish, a Japanese delicacy.

He says: “I’m Japanese and I love sushi. I’ve eaten many exotic fish and parts of fish. And I’ve even had live fish that’s had a bamboo spit driven through its gill attached to a radish and a bamboo spit through its tail so that it can’t flop around. It just undulates. And one side has been sliced elegantly. You pick up a slice from this undulating body with your chopsticks and you dip that slice into the ginger sauce. The slice flinches and you eat it. You can’t get fish any fresher than that. I put that live thing right into my mouth and it went undulating down my throat. It was delicious.”

George says he doesn’t have any phobias, is good at working in a team and the things he will miss the most are his husband and LA.

He says: “I get along with people. I understand we are going to be working in teams so I am a good team player and if need be, I can lead a team.”

“I think I will miss home. My husband, Brad, isn’t going to be with me so I will miss him. I’ll miss my friends and the familiarity of home. I was born in Los Angeles and I love my city I think it’s one of the most exciting cities in the world so I will miss LA. I love music so I will be cut off from that and miss being connected to what’s happening in the world.”

George says he is curious about being filmed 24 hours a day, and doesn’t know how he will react and that he has a couple of interesting facts about himself that he can share with his campmates.

He says: “That is going to be a new experience for me about giving up privacy. There’s privacy in the privy though, but other than that, we have no privacy. I wonder what my reaction would be to that. I don’t know.

“I’m very active in social and political issues in America. I was Mayor Tom Bradley’s appointee to the Southern California Rapid Transit District board. I served on that district board for 11 years. His mandate to me was to get the agency started on building a subway system here in Los Angeles. This was back in 1973, and today we have the most modern subway system in the world. We have a ballot measure in the election next week to pay for an extension on the subway system.

“I have also been an appointee of President Clinton’s on the Japan-US Friendship Commission. At that same time, I was serving as the Chairman of the Board of the Japanese American National Museum. We sent an exhibit on the Japanese American experience in America to travel throughout Japan for two years. For these activities, I received an unexpected honour from the Emperor of Japan. The Order of the Rising Sun with gold rays and rosette at the Imperial Palace, which is something else people might not know about me.”

George says he would like to be in the jungle with someone who is good at survival and thinks the only thing about him which may annoy people is his laugh.

He says: “Strangely, I find nothing about me annoying, but I do have a distinctive laugh and people have mocked me for my laugh. I have a hearty laugh.

“My dream jungle mate would be someone who’s good at survival, somebody who has a well controlled temper and an engaging personality and is personable and is physically fit.

“The worst mate in the jungle would be the total opposite to that – someone who is cranky, temperamental, explosive, who knows nothing about the jungle and has no respect for others and is totally self centred.”
