Pop superstar Janet Jackson showed up on last night’s American Idol finale and sang a great medley of some of her biggest hits.

Starting off with an emotional rendition of ‘Again’ with this year’s Idol top 12, Janet went on to give a moving vocal on ‘Nothing’ followed by an incredibly energetic and fiesty performance of ‘Nasty.’ She started off in a very demure and elegant black and red full length gown, but during a quick break before ‘Nasty,’ stripped into a skintight catsuit….proving that she still has those killer curves!

We thought that Janet’s performance served as a great warning to all those young and new artists out there. This woman is 44 years old and can energize a crowd like few others are able….She certainly has the Jackson magic!

News of Janet’s appearance was leaked yesterday afternoon by record producer Jermaine Dupri. He wrote on his Twitter page:

“@Oceans7LTL: Lifers once again be sure to watch American Idol tonight the QUEEN Icon @JanetJackson will B performing “Nothing” 2nite! @bmc_1201 @LTLline @johntalsr.”

To say it helped build anticipation for the show would be an extreme understatement. News spread like wildfire and Janet fans flooded Twitter to discuss her upcoming Idol performance.

Janet Jackson performed a bit of a medley on tonight’s X Factor results show.

Janet has been topping charts since signing her first record deal in 1982. She has sold more than 100 million records worldwide and is the only artist in US chart history to boast seven top 5 hits from a single album. She has accumulated five Grammys so far, as well as multiple MTV Awards, Billboard Music Awards, and Soul Train Music Awards.

Tonight Janet did what she’s best at – big group dancing efforts as she (seemingly) mimed her way through some of her biggest solo hits. We thought that Jan was going to do a bit of an Michael tribute and are surprisingly glad that she sang her own material instead. She really is one talented lady and just like Lady GaGa, she put those X Factor semi-finalists to shame.

After her performance, Janet strutted off the stage, missing an opportunity to offer cliched advice to the contestants about how to ‘believe in talent’ and ‘just be yourself’. Good move Jan!

During this week’s X Factor semi finals, each act will sing a Michael Jackson song, his sister Janet will also be appearing on the show.

Before his death, Simon Cowell had hoped that Michael himself would be able to appear on the show, however Janet will now give a tribute performance and offer her thoughts on the Saturday night performances.

An insider said: “The Michael Jackson numbers will be huge crowd pleasers – and each contestant will want to do Janet and the Jackson family proud.”

The semi-finalists will also get to sing a song of their own choice.

The X Factor will be showcasing Janet Jackson’s only UK TV performance of 2009, drawn from her recently released greatest hits compilation The Best. Lady Gaga will be performing her latest hit single, Bad Romance, for the first time ever on UK television.

Janet Jackson and Lady Gaga have reportedly been lined up to perform and mentor contestants, for an upcoming Michael Jackson themed X Factor show.

Before his death, ITV bosses were rumoured to have lined up MJ for the show himself, however now they are hoping that his sister will perform a tribute in his honour.

The Michael Jackson week will most likely take place during the show’s semi final week, as both Janet and Lady Gaga are scheduled to be in the UK at that time.

Janet will be a mentor figure for aspiring dancers and singers as she searches for the next big star.

Executive producer David Broome said: “It’s really about finding who’s the next Janet Jackson or Justin Timberlake or Usher. And we’ll find it from a pool of people who you wouldn’t typically find it from. We’ll go to YMCAs, church groups, local community centers and try to cast the show.”
