This morning, I attended the press screening and cast meet and greet for new MTV show The Valleys, and if I’m honest, I was expecting the show to be – another – bit of TV fluff; uninteresting dross for the mainly brainless and/or brain dead…
However, quite aside from the fact that The Valleys really doesn’t have an equal in anything else that’s on TV right now, what it does have is a rather refreshing, unapologetic honesty and an innate, rich vein of humour running right through it.
Unlike some of its genre’s peers, you simply can’t engineer or script what The Valleys has; it’s either there or it isn’t, and in The Valleys, let me tell you boyo, it’s there, in spades.
And while yes, there is talk of fake tans, fake boobs, hair extensions and so on, and comparisons between The Valleys and Geordie Shore are inevitable, not least because they air on the same channel, the cast of Valleys are so energised and energising, not to mention downright funny, it takes no time at all to warm to them, whereas with other shows of its ilk, I often don’t warm to the cast, at all… Read more & comment »
