American Idol lost another contestant last night as oil rig worker Michael Sarver was voted off the competition.

Sarver, who sang “Ain’t Too Proud To Beg” failed to impress the judges and the public voters. There was a shock earlier in the night as Matt Giraud was told he was in the bottom three, alongside blind contestant Scott Macintyre.

Giraud was left to sweat for longer as he was left in the bottom two alongside Sarver, with judge Randy Jackson telling him “you definitely don’t deserve to be there,” before Sarver was finally put out of his misery by Simon Cowell, who bluntly told him “You’re going home. Sorry”.

I think Michael Sarver was the right choice and the obvious choice to leave. After all Michael admitted himself that even before he took to the stage on Wednesday night, he knew he wasn’t going to be up to par and he knew the song wasn’t going to work. He seemed to have accepted his defeat at least 24 hours before it was confirmed.

I also think that Scott MacIntyre deserved to be in the bottom three and if he doesn’t really turn things around next week he will be the next person to go home. Scott’s not a bad singer, but he lacks the stage presence of some of the other male contestants and realistically there’s only so far that sympathy can take you on a show like this.

Yes you read the title right! Last night the American Idol judges twisted proceedings a little and at the end of the wild card round announced that this year, they were actually going to allow thirteen contestants through to the live finals rather than the usual twelve.

Anoop Desai, Jasmine Murray, Megan Corkrey and Matt Giraud will now join Jorge Nunez, Scott MacIntyre, Lil Rounds, Kris Allen, Adam Lambert, Allison Iraheta, Danny Gokey, Alexis Grace and Michael Sarver in next weeks first live show in the full size American Idol studio.

I think last night’s choice were all quite predictable and doubt that the judges made their decision on the spot. Each person who got through was definitely amongst the favourites in their original group and each has a massive fanbase out there in the real world, especially Anoop it would seem. Simon claimed that the decision to make the numbers up to thirteen was semi spontaneous, but I think it might just be the ‘shocker’ talked about by Fox execs at the beginning of the season.
