Former Pop Idol winner, Michelle McManus has said that she wasn’t offended when she realised that Peter Kay’s Geraldine McQueen was based on her.

On the Channel 4 parody, Britain’s Got The Pop Factor…. McQueen, wore similar outfits to Michelle, sported an almost identical hairstyle and ‘The Winner’s Song’ single cover was eerily similar to the cover of Michelle’s debut album The Meaning Of Love.

Speaking to the Daily Record, McManus admitted: “Peter looks identical to me. He’s a big guy. I’m a big girl. Put a wig on him and he really did look like me on Pop Idol. Just look at the album cover.

“And on Britain’s Got The Pop Factor, he dressed very similar to the way I dressed on Pop Idol. But I absolutely adored that show. I didn’t get upset at it at all. I loved it.”

She added: “He wasn’t being nasty. I thought it was very funny.”

“I watched every episode of X Factor last year and voted for Leona Lewis, who I thought was unbelievable. I’ve even bought her single because she is fantastic,” Michelle told the Daily Record.

“But I can’t watch it this year. Everyone has a sob story and everything is staged between the judges. It is so affected to the point I don’t believe a word that is coming out of anyone’s mouth. X Factor is a caricature of itself and just awful.”

A source said: “Michelle had pinned all her hopes on getting the role of Mama Morton. She thought she was perfect for it.

“Michelle had been practising the songs and everything.”

“Michelle would love to be on the stage. She would be in her element. She’s trying not to let this knock get her down – but it’s hard when she had her heart set on it.”

Both women had auditioned for the part of Mama Morton in the hit stage production of Chicago, but last week the news broke that fiesty soul diva Brenda Edwards had been awarded the role.

But Michelle has not given up all hope and a source commented “by the summer, she’s hoping to have landed a starring role in another West End show.”
