Paul McCartney has admitted that he sincerely believes his band The Beatles could have won The X Factor, had it been around in the 60s.

In an interview with The Daily Record, the song writing legend admits that tunes like ‘Love Me Do’ may not have won the band the title, but says that some of their later performances would have guaranteed them the top spot.

Macca made a guest appearance on X Factor last year, singing alongside hopefuls including Joe McElderry, Stacey Solomon, Olly Murrs and Jedward. On whether he would have stood a chance as a contestant he said:

“I think we’d have won it. Seriously. Simon Cowell and Louis Walsh would have been all over us like a wet washcloth.

“If you’re talking of The Beatles on Love Me Do – there’s doubt. But if you’re talking of when we’d developed some of our better songs …we’d cream ‘em.”

Paul admitted that initially he hated the ITV show, but gave it a chance because of his children.

He said: “On Saturday night, they’d all dive into the living room shouting: ‘X Factor.’ I started to watch it through their eyes and thought it was very good television. I’m not gonna put it down.”

“To give the show it’s due it does throw up acts like Leona Lewis, they got a great winner there.

“You also get things like Jedward which is just pure entertainment – even if there’s also a lot of rubbish inbetween.

“But if young kids love X-Factor who’s to say they’re wrong? It’s not my cup of tea but it’s a great, family show.”

Paul McCartney has revealed that he had a lot of people advising him not to perform on The X Factor last December. He admitted that he only said yes to the offer, after Beyonce appeared on the show.

Paul told Contactmusic: “Actually, when the offer came through it polarised a lot of people. Lots of my friends told me not to do it. It’s a pop show. But what turned me around – apart from the huge audience – was the fact that it’s a family show, and so many kids are obsessed by it.

“Also, Beyoncé was on it, and if it’s good enough for her then it should be good enough for me. Plus, it threw up Leona Lewis and she’s no slouch. Know what I mean?”

McCartney added that he put his all into his performance of ‘Drive My Car’ and ‘Live And Let Die’.

“It was a big deal for us playing two songs back to back like that,” he explained. “It’s a live show and we decided to play it live, rather than to a backing track. Which means you have to act like an Aston Martin and go from 0-60 in three seconds.

“As a band, we were really energised that night, which we had to be to make it work. Weirdly, the show felt quite intimate, as the studio is a lot smaller than it looks on TV. But we put everything into that show.”

We were just glad that he didn’t sing ‘Hey Jude’ again!

Sir Paul McCartney has admitted that many of his advisors warned him not to appear on this year’s X Factor final.

The former Beatles star revealed that some people thought he was too big for the show and that an appearance would damage his reputation.

Paul told The Sun:

‘At first, when we talked about going on X Factor, it was a bit of a worry, I must say. It was like, ‘People say we shouldn’t do that. They say you are too big for a show like that. It’ll ruin your reputation’ and I thought about it. But then I’m always getting told that – ‘Don’t go to perform in Israel’ or ‘You can’t do this or that’.’

‘Then if someone tells me not to do it, I want to do it more. They said, ‘Don’t do X Factor’ and I said, ‘Wait a minute, let’s check it out’.’

He added: ‘I started asking people in the street. They all said, ‘Oh, do that, it’s great.’ I’m a fan of normal people and normal people usually get it right. The attitude to X Factor from some people is strange. Look, it’s very much a family show and most people love it. They are all talking about it all the time.’

Sir Paul said the show really impacts public opinion: ‘It polarises the purists. We’ve had that with The Beatles before and whether we should remaster stuff.

‘The thing with X Factor is, you don’t have to turn it on. It is really not a bad thing. You are talking about people being on the dole – this gets people off the dole. It gives some people an opportunity, it gives them confidence, it gives them work. There is nothing wrong with that.’

Sir Paul McCartney has admitted that he would be happy to see Rage Against The Machine score this year’s Christmas Number One.

After an amazing viral internet campaign, protesters have ensured that RATM have so far sold more copies of their single ‘Killing In The Name Of’ than X Factor winner Joe McElderry’s ‘The Climb’.

Despite appearing on The X Factor live final, when asked how he felt about the RATM campaign Paul told Sky News:

“I like the idea. Everyone expects Joe to do it, and if he goes to number one then good luck to him.

“He’s just some kid with a career ahead. I’ve got nothing against that, but it would be kind of funny if Rage Against The Machine got it because it would prove a point.”

Paul McCartney made his X Factor debut tonight as part of the live final show. Dermot O’Leary almost peed himself as he introduced the former Beatles singer, personally we weren’t quite so excited.

Paul sang the Beatles classic ‘Drive My Car’ and even though he bobbed way more than was necessary and looked suspiciously like my dad, we found ourselves really getting into the whole vibe.

Towards the end of the song the final 12 X factor singers joined him on stage, not that you could really hear them. It seemed like the sound guys had given them all fake microphones, which in Jedwards case wasn’t such a bad thing.

Roadies then descended onto the stage and pulled out a psychedelic piano for Mr McC and he launched into a rendition of Live or Let Die. We have always preferred the Gun n Roses version of this one but actually, Paul really rocked it up tonight. For an old guy he was really very good. It is starting to dawn on us why this guy is still famous after so many decades of making music. You could say that, for us, Paul McCartney has the X Factor.

Last year’s X Factor runners up JLS, will reportedly be performing on tonight’s live final.

JLS previously performed their hit single ‘Everybody In Love’ on week 4′s live show, it can be seen in the clip above.

Louis Walsh was speaking to RTÉ’s Afternoon Show this week, when he revealed that the boyband would be performing their newest single tonight.

Leona Lewis and Alexandra Burke are also expected to take to the X Factor stage along with Paul McCartney, who will sing with all of the 12 finalists of 2009. Michael Underwood who appeared on last night’s show just tweeted that George Michael would be making a comeback too!

The twins will perform alongside Sir Paul McCartney and the other 11 final acts and their new manager Louis Walsh has told them to be sure and upstage everyone on the stage.

A source told The Daily Star:

“Everyone on the show loved having the twins back.

“Even the three finalists said it was great to have them around.

“There’s a real party atmosphere backstage and everyone can’t wait for the show to kick off.”

The X Factor final 12 will be returning to the show this weekend and will perform on the final with Beatles legend, Paul McCartney.

John and Edward Grimes are said to be particularly excited by the prospect and a source told The Mirror:

“Not many people would have guessed at the start that the twins would get to sing with a music legend.

“It is going to be such an honour for the finalists and a nice thank you for all the hard work they put in.”

We recently revealed that Simon Cowell has lined up Paul McCartney, George Michael, Robbie Williams and Michael Buble for his weeks X Factor final show.

Rumours now suggest that Paul McCartney will be singing his hit ‘Say Say Say’ with young Joe McElderry, a song he once sang with the late Michael Jackson.

With Joe’s vocal range, we think he will handle this song beautifully but lets hope they leave out the dialogue featured at the start of the video above.

If Joe sings with Sir Paul, then no doubt Olly will sing with Robbie, leaving Stacey either George Michael or Michael Buble.

Simon Cowell confirmed on last night’s Xtra Factor that he had confirmed all the guest performances and duets for next week’s X Factor final. The Mirror has now reported that those guests would be George Michael, Paul McCartney, Michael Buble and Robbie Williams.

It is thought that Olly Murs will perform with Robbie Williams, Joe McElderry will sing with George Michael and Stacey Solomon will duet with Michael Buble. Paul McCartney will most likely give a solo performance during the live grand final.

A source told The Mirror: “In previous years we have had some great acts but nothing beats having FOUR of the great male solo acts in one weekend.

“This has all the makings of the biggest X Factor show ever. It will be the only thing people will be talking about at work on Monday.”

Another source added: “George jumped at the chance to go on. He’s a huge fan and was chuffed with the Wham and George Michael week.”
