X Factor 2009 winner, Joe McElderry has reportedly signed up to take part in Popstar to Operastar this summer.

The Geordie, who was mentored by Cheryl Cole on the ITV reality TV show, was dropped by Simon Cowell’s record label last month, and insiders say he sees this as a chance to stage a bit of a TV comeback.

A source told the Sunday Mirror: “Joe loves to sing he’s not bothered about what people will say. He will prosper from doing a show like this.

“He’s incredibly talented and thinks appearing on the show could open up a whole new chapter.

“He’s always loved the West End and thrill of performing live it’s when he’s at his best.”

The source added: “Considering the deal with Syco has just fizzled out, Joe’s in a great place right now.

“He’s investing his money wisely and making sure he has something to show for all of his hard work.”

ITV are reportedly planning a new reality TV show, in which popstars will retrain as opera singers.

After a bit of training, the stars will perform live each week and be voted out in the style of X Factor or Britian’s Got Talent. Britain’s Got Talent winner Paul Potts is being lined up to perform and may also mentor the hopefuls.

The Sun reports that Katherine Jenkins, Dame Kiri Te Kanawa, Bryn Terfel and Russell Watson are all being considered as judges.

A source said:

“We are talking about people like Will, Kimberley Walsh from Girls Aloud and Mutya from the Sugababes.

“It’s all about getting people out of their comfort zones. It is a tough call for an established singer, as they could end up struggling with some of the notes in opera.”
