Simon walks away with the prize of a six-figure salaried job with the self-made multi-millionaire and boss of Amstrad, Sir Alan Sugar.

In the concluding episode, screened last night on BBC One, Simon beat off stiff competition from 36-year-old pharmaceutical sales manager Kristina Grimes, by managing a team of fired apprentices in the toughest task yet – they had to come up with ideas for a replacement building to Sir Alan’s recently acquired £120million IBM building on the South Bank.

Although some said Simon’s design looked like a flaccid-looking phallic symbol, he won over a room full of architects and property gurus during his presentation. Sir Alan later credited Simon with delivering a presentation about his building design which had “hard-nosed business people … eating out of his hands.”

Meanwhile, Kristina failed to impress with an Angel Of The North-style property that architects said was redolent of Thirties fascist architecture.

Sir Alan dropped the bombshell news by telling the pair: “It’s a very difficult decision. There’s only one job. I’ve got someone who’s very experienced. I’ve also got someone who’s enthusiastic, a great talker and willing to learn.”

He told Simon: “Bloody old fool that I am, I’m going to take that risk, you’re hired.”

Kristina Grimes told the Daily Mirror “If you think intelligence is sleeping with married men and only getting to wherever you are because you have slept there, then more fool you.”

Simon added “she has got more issues than the Beano. I think she should try to find some more married men. Hats off to her if she thinks that is the route she has to take.”

Controversially, instead of sacking one person, Sir Alan Sugar announced that he would sack three, to make room for two people in next weeks final.

The contestants had to endure three rigorous interviews with trusted business associates of Sir Alan, who then fed back their opinions to the boss man.

Sir Alan quickly arrived at his decision to get rid of Lohit and Tre (FINALLY!) but was in a quandary when it came to decide between Katie, Kristina and Simon.

Sir Alan voiced his concerns about the location of Katie’s home in Exeter and her two young children. He was also suspicious of Katie’s motives when it comes to winning the apprentice’s job. Many of his associates suspected that Katie would win the show and walk away soon after.

After receiving assurances from Katie that this was not the case Sir Alan Sugar offered her a place in the final. As he went on to deliberate between Simon and Kristina he noticed that Katie looked less than elated, prompting him to ask her if there was a problem. She admitted that the move from Exeter to London may not be as easy as she had implied and after some deliberation decided to bow out of the race.

So there you have it, Kristina and Simon in The Apprentice final. Kristina is probably the better candidate, but Simon is a lovely guy with loads of untapped potential. Tune in next week for the series finale!

His first job was assisting in a discount jewellery shop where he was trained to differentiate between real and fake diamonds by judging their weight in carats – a skill he still has. At university Simon tried his has hand at acting and even performed at the famous Cambridge Footlights. He enjoys yachting, karate and kite boarding.

He says: “My Dad bought me an Amstrad PC when I was six and I learned how to program it. I still have it. It will be a dream come true if I end up working for him.”
