The ultimate dance off saw six talented dance acts compete against each other to win a life changing cash prize of £100k. It was ten year old street dancer Akai Osei who won over the public and claimed the title of Got To Dance champion 2010.

Ten year old Akai, who has only been dancing for year, wowed the viewers and judges alike with a set of sophisticated moves, including head spins, body popping and backsliding. The audience gave him standing ovations and the judges awarded him three gold stars following both of his performances.

On his win, Akai said, “I can’t believe it, this is amazing. It’s been the best night of my life, I don’t know what I’ll do with the prize money yet, but I definitely want to give some to charity. I haven’t decided which one yet.”

Our Got To Dance judging panel comprises of Pussycat Doll Kimberly Wyatt, Diversity Leader Ashley Banjo and West End star and movie actor Adam Garcia, who said of Akai’s victory:

Ashley Banjo:

“Firstly, he and his family should be so proud. He sums up this competition, he’s not professional, has only been dancing for a year and is only 10 years old and has just got to dance and he beats me hands down!”

Kimberly Wyatt:

“I’m so proud of Akai, he has been on point to the max and I have so much respect for him. I love his confidence. Amazing!”

Adam Garcia:

“He has incredible stage presence and is just born to dance. I’ve always loved what he does, everyone loves what he does. Just incredible.”

Host Davina McCall commented:

“I am so thrilled for Akai, but glad the viewers voted, I couldn’t have picked a winner, all of the finalists are amazing, they have put in such hard work. I’m going to get Akai to teach me some moves now.”

Got To Dance scoured the UK and Ireland, visiting 14 cities and covering thousands of miles to seek out the best dance crews, troupes and solo dancers of all style and ages. From thousands of applicants, almost 100 dancers aged from 4 to 82 auditioned in front of a live audience and the Got To Dance judging panel. The panel then narrowed these acts down to the Final 18 who performed in a series of live semi-final shows competing for the viewers’ votes to go through to Sunday 14 February’s live final.

Acts who competed in the final against Akai were:

Jukebox Juniors, a junior Cardiff based dance troupe, Matthew Koon, a 16 year old contemporary dancer, Glaswegian junior ballet group The Box, ten year old Perthshire contemporary dancer Emily Crow and MJ Latin, a Latin American style dance group from Preston.

View the original post Akai Osei wins Got To Dance! on Unreality TV

Got To Dance – The Semi-Finals, 31 January 2010

Got To Dance

Liveblogging

Sky 1

The first series of Sky One’s foray into reality talent shows is drawing to a close with the second night of semi-finals. I’ll confess, I haven’t seen the show in a couple of weeks, so it’ll be nice to see who’s progressed to this stage of the competition.

And just in case you’d missed Davina McCall since Celebrity Big Brother wrapped up on Friday night, she’s still presenting this! Isn’t it unusual to see her wearing something colourful instead of her usual eviction night, all-black costumes?

Although we have our judging panel there to guide the public, it’s ultimately the public vote that will decide who goes through to the finals.

Kane Ricca’s tap routine

First up is tap-dancing hunk Kane. He gives a frantic routine, has a bit of stumble when he comes off a high platform. I can’t decide if I like this though, it seems to be all over the place. But then again, what the hell would I know? Adam disagrees with me – “Mate, that was awesome. From the moment it started, you just really danced with everything tonight. I just saw how much passion and conviction you danced with. As a performer, that’s where you really shine.” Kimberley says “You know how to own the stage, you have all the power and performance of a solo tap star.” Ashley compliments his stage presence. Three gold stars from the judges.

Raw Edge

The Raw Edge dancers are decked out in funky green, white and black costumes. Thankfully, they’re a street act, so a little bit more accessible than the tap stuff. They brilliantly work in an Irish dancing tune at the end of their piece which made me smile – very entertaining! Ashley thought “it needed to be more complete. The creativity was there and it was tight, but it fell that bit short. I’m on the fence.” Ouch, he gives them a red star. Kimberley says it “just built and built and built. You left me wanting more, and that’s a good thing.” Adam says he thinks they are unique. “It was a little jittery at the beginning. You guys really entertained me, so yes.” Raw Edge get two gold stars.

Beyond Repair

Oh, this gets my vote for using a clip from the old Doctor Who theme tune, then seguing into a Kashmir style riff. It’s a robotic, entertaining routine. The costumes and make-up are freaky – they call them a mixture of “David Bowie and Lady Gaga”. Kimberley – “I wanted more energy, and I don’t know if the dancing went with the music. Based on this performance I just have to say no.” Adam says “I love what you guys do – you’re different and marvellously weird. I thought you had more energy in your audition. I’m gonna have to say no. Ashley: “Based on that performance, I don’t think you deserve a place in the final.”

MJ Latin

This Lancashire based dance crew are doing ballroom dancing to Michael Jackson songs – weird and wonderful. I can see what they’re trying to achieve, but it’s not my thing – I don’t get it. Ashley says that though he was disappointed in them in the auditions, they impressed him tonight. Kimberley “I think that this performance was missing the attitude and energy that I loved from you guys. You’ve gotta walk like you own that stage.” Adam says that he’d forgotten how young the group are, “I don’t think it’s enough for the final.” MJ Latin get two red stars and only one gold star from Ashley Banjo.

DNA

This feisty, mostly girl dance crew certainly look the part – naturally, it’s another street dance act, but these ladies (and one gent) are really tight, they remind me of a female version of Ashley’s crew Diversity. Adam says “I liked it, it only got really exciting when it got quicker.” Kimberley says that “The pieces didn’t connect, therefore it wasn’t the whole package.” Ashley compliments their aggressive character, but still says they weren’t good enough to go to the final. He gives them one star, which is a bit pathetic – I don’t understand how they didn’t like that performance! Those judges are so inconsistent and fickle!

Matthew Koon

Remember Matthew? He wowed us all in Manchester, and drew rave reviews from the Got To Dance judges. He’s a hot favourite to make the final, but will the judges turn against him tonight as they’ve already done with so many other acts? It’s a distinctive dance from Matthew that puts me in mind of Robbie from So You Think You Can Dance, very athletic and acrobatic. The judges look amazed! They’re all on their feet! Kimberley: “I can’t remember the last time I was blessed to see such a talent. You bring me such emotion, it’s amazing!” Ashley: “That was my favourite performance on Got To Dance so far. You could go anywhere in the world and perform.” He gets three gold stars from the judges, and a lot of gushing from Adam.

After a sizzling solo routine from my new favourite Pussycat, Kimberley, Davina asks the judges who they’d like to see in the finals – they unanimously say Matthew Koon and Kane Ricca. However, when Davina announces the results (reprising her Big Brother line “the votes have been counted and verified” – I’m surprised she didn’t say “Please do not swear”) it’s Matthew Koon and MJ Latin who get through to the finals. That’s a surprise – I didn’t think MJ Latin were that good.

View the original post Got To Dance – The Semi-Finals, 31 January 2010 on Unreality TV

Got To Dance: 10 year old Akai impresses the judges!

Got To Dance

Sky 1

Check out little Akai, bringing not just the moves but the cute to the Got To Dance stage! It’s like Britain’s Got Talent, but with less reliance on the sad, sad stories – there’s less mockery, even of the bad acts and more focus on dancing ability.

What they do well is balance the back-story of the auditionee with good focus on their actual talent.

Double Up

Dancing brothers Double Up were split up after their parents divorced – in the aftermath of the divorce, both brothers fought constantly and had to be split – one living with the father, and the other with their mother. Eventually, through a shared love of dance, the two became close again. On stage, the routine is initially a bit stilted, but the brothers get a bit more funky when the track switches to Beyonce’s Sweet Dreams. Double Up get three gold stars from the judges.

Kimberley: I think you guys are amazing – I love it when people blow me away. I’m speechless. Adam: You seem so sweet and kind of shy, and that worked. You can be proud of that. You guys are brilliant.

We see a tap routine from Mi T, some bagpipe weirdness and a mix of gorgeous and hideous ethnic costumes. Was surprised to see an act get through after an Irish dancing routine – the judges are clearly open to all types of performance. Bhangra Heads – a nine-piece Indian act – come along with a fun group performance and get three stars from the judges. Adam commented that it “was just so joyous”.

Michael Silk

Silk is a breakdancer. But he’s also an athsma sufferer. Will this cause him a problem? He dances well, but manages to take a puff of his inhaler during his performance! Then the paramedics are called to the stage and he’s given assistance. Car crash stuff, this is. As a result, the judges give him two red stars.

Ashley: This is hard. I’ve gotta applaud you coming out with that condition. [Ashley changes his mind at this point and gives Silk a gold star and lets him through. Kimberley warns him that he needs to have a better routine next time.]

Kiki LMX

Daddy’s girl Kiki hits the stage with amazing vibrancy and energy and gets amazing feedback from the audience. Sadly, the judges don’t reflect this – she gets two red stars from Kimberley and Ashley. She cries as Kimberley gives her advice from the panel. Kimberley gets upset too and follows her out to the smaller dome and gives her some encouraging words.

After this, they roll out the disaster reel – some really bad acts. Special shout out goes to Spandex – three amazingly camp, hairy dudes. Garcia says “Simply for the amount of body glitter, I’d put you through…” They’re followed by a woman who looks like Pete Burns’ more flamboyant sister. Frightening.

Nadine

Dance teacher Nadine from Manchester has brought along all of her pupils today. Reflections, the middle group, get through with two stars. The youngest group, the Lollipops get three red stars – harsh, judges! Nadine and Dance Dynamix are up next – dancing to a Pussycat Dolls song – a good move? Three gold stars are their reward. A brilliant routine. Ashley deems the performance “tight” (which is good, we hear)

The Dizzy Dolls

Oh, this seems like a disaster waiting to happen – giggly friends who’ve brought their dads along – taxi drivers, choreographers and cheerleaders for the duo! Ohmigod – what looked like a blooper act is actually funky and goofy and enjoyable. But you can just tell Kimberley’s trigger finger is on the red button! Thankfully, Ashley and Adam give them a vote through. Ashley notes that one of the girls was clearly getting tired toward the end of the routine – something we all noticed, but they were endearing enough to carry it!

Time for another blooper reel though – some crungeworthy acts. Like I said at the top of this post, even though some of the acts are terrible, they’re not humiliated by the production – we get a look at them, have a giggle and move on.

Akai

Young street dancer Akai is up next – 10 years old. Despite his age and size, he pulls off some smooth moves – Ashley’s jaw hits the floor as the kid flips over on his head. Amazing dancing, Akai! What a cool wee dude! He gets three gold stars from the panel. Banjo tells him that he was born to dance. Adam says “With that sort of skill and those sort of tricks, you’re just the type of contender we’re looking for.

Before the episode wraps, we see the judges talking up the contestants we’ve seen so far – they’re clearly impressed at the level of talent they’ve put through to the finals. Next week – they have the nasty task of shortlisting the finalists!

As for you lot – which acts did you njoy most tonight? And have you any thoughts on who the best Got To Dance judge is so far?

View the original post Got To Dance – 10 January 2009 – Review on Unreality TV

Got To Dance: Kimberley Wyatt may not be a Pussycat Doll

Got To Dance

Kimberley Wyatt

Sky 1

Got To Dance judge Kimberley Wyatt has admitted that she doesn’t know if she is still in girl group, The Pussycat Dolls.
