We already knew Nicole Scherzinger could dance, she won Dancing With The Stars last year after all, but we were still massively impressed with her smooth moves when she took to the So You Think You Can Dance stage this week.

The new X Factor judge was performing her recent single ‘Right There’ on on the Top 12 results show and obviously wanted to showcase her own moves for the finalists. The choreography was fast paced and energetic and yet, just added to her vocal performance.

In America, Right There was the lead single from Nicole’s studio album, Killer Love. The album is set for it’s US release on August 16, and so a performance on SYTYCD was the perfect opportunity for a bit of promotion.

‘Right There,’ features 50 Cent and got it’s première on ‘American Idol’ on May 19.

In the UK, Nicole has already released two singles from ‘Killer Love.’ The RedOne-produced lead single, “Poison” peaked at number three in britain, becoming one of Scherzinger’s highest charting solo singles. A second single “Don’t Hold Your Breath” (produced by Carl Falk, Steve Josefsson and Rami) reached the number one spot in the UK and top-ten Ireland.

We are desperately saddened by claims today that BBC are planning to axe So You Think You Can Dance.

The reality TV series is a huge hit in America and only last Wednesday night, was the most-watched prime-time program in the country.

However the format has not been so successful in the UK and insiders say that although the first series of the show was well received, the second series never took off properly and the BBC are not now planning to air a third.

Saturday evening saw some of the show’s lowest rating figures to date, when only 2.6 million people tuned in to watch the semi final – the same amount as watched as Dad’s Army on BBC2.

Speaking about the show’s future, an insider told The Sun:

“Bosses tried to make it work over here. But they have now conceded that it is not going to and that it is time to focus on other things.

“It was a good format with good judges, but viewers here in Britain just did not connect with it like the people did in America.”

We think the problem wasn’t in the quality of the show, but in the scheduling and promotion of it.

Nigel Lythgoe, Arlene Phillips, Louise Redknapp and Sisco Gomez all do an outstanding job as judges and have uncovered some extremely talented individuals on this year’s series. However, moving the series from January to April was the BBC’s first mistake. Not only did the series have to compete with a heatwave during it’s first few weeks, but it was also up against the supremely popular Britain’s Got Talent on ITV.

Also, moving from an evening slot to 5.30pm was another huge mistake as many viewers told Unreality TV that they forgot or were unable to tune in at this earlier time.

Thirdly, the series launched to very little fanfare this time round. It wasn’t promoted heavily beforehand and when it premièred earlier in the spring, many dance enthusiasts and potential viewers not even aware that it had returned.

When compared to the Cowell centric shows that seem to dominate our TV screens, SYTYCD is a very credible show with much less sensationalism and much more talent than it’s ITV counterpart. Nigel Lythgoe regenerated this year’s American Idol and we think he could have brought the same magic to So You Think You Can Dance, if the other factors had been handled well. However, it seems that the BBC dropped the ball on this one and now it may be too late to pick it up again.

If these acts don’t buck up the ratings of BBC’s So You Think You Can Dance, then we don’t know what will!

Nigel Lythgoe has great connections (given that he is currently executive producer of the hugely popular American Idol and the US version of SYTYCD) and has managed to sign up The Black Eyed Peas, The Wanted and Jessie J to perform on upcoming episodes of the UK dance competition.

The Wanted will take to the stage first, performing on this weekend’s results show, which will see another two performers being voted off the show. Jessie J and the Black Eyed Peas will perform next week, May 14.

Moving on from last week’s Royal Wedding themed show, tonight the remaining dancers will take part in a group dance inspired by Hairspray and Strictly Come Dancing’s Karen Hardy will be in the studio, after working with two of the couples on their ballroom skills this week.

Performing in the same couples as last week, the dancers will take to the floor to impress the viewers at home and win their valuable votes. The pressure is on. Who will be forced to dance for their place in the competition?

Tonight’s results show features a wedding-related surprise performance before one boy and one girl take their final bow and dance their way out of the contest, and out of the running for the chance to realise their dreams in Hollywood and take home the £50,000 prize.

After last week’s spectacular showcase, it was straight back into the rehearsal studio for the 20 dance finalists.

It was time for the contest to get serious…

They displayed their specialities in this week’s first live show and then paired up to dance in couples for the first time. Crucially they were challenged with routines from far outside their comfort zones.

After all the exhilarating performances – and an intense battle to win the backing of the audience and judges – the final verdict saw Ryan Jenkins and Paige Smith being the first boy and girl to be eliminated from the competition.

Tension in the studio reached fever pitch during the live results. The vote was revealed that Stephanie & Ryan and Paige & Gian Luca had the least number of votes and were in the ‘danger zone’, having to dance for their lives to stay in the game. With all four dancers giving their all in a 30 second solo – it was down to the judges who they would give a second chance.

After they danced for their lives, Nigel said to the four dancers who found themselves in the “danger zone”:

“It’s so tough. I have to say, first night of the competition and it’s so sad that people have to go home straight away and not have time to grow. That’s the way it works I’m afraid.

“Gian Luca… It’s very difficult to judge you this evening as you were let down obviously very badly by your partner. However, when we look at you we know that you have got great technique, and we will be judging you on things that have occurred in the past, and what we know of your dancing.”

Nigel continued, “Ryan it’s quite interesting, that you said in one of the [video] packages there “what have I got to do to impress Nigel?”. It isn’t – or wasn’t – about impressing me, it’s about impressing the country. Obviously you didn’t do that as you’re in the bottom two couples tonight. Ryan – a good dancer will make a routine great. It wasn’t memorable.”

To the girls, Nigel’s comments were, “Paige, what can I say darling, you are such a fun fireball of talent. Tonight it all just went away – again we have to judge you I think on things we’ve seen in the past, rather than just tonight.

“Stephanie – you served it up tonight, you showed us how a sexy Latin routine should look. You were very beautiful in doing that. But your first routine was not memorable.

“We are unanimous with our decision Cat this evening, and the people going home tonight – Paige and Ryan would you step forward please – I’m so sorry you will be leaving us this evening.”

Reflecting back on the results of tonight’s show, a teary Paige stated “I’ve enjoyed every moment – the highs and the lows. Loved all the choreographers, I’ve learnt so much. I’m a young dancer, now I am just going to grow”.

And for Ryan, “It’s been an amazing experience, and I’ve learnt so much working with the top choreographers. I’m hoping to take these experiences through to my choreography career. I’ve made so many friends in this competition. I wish everyone the best of luck and I’ll be watching and supporting from home!”

The live results show also featured a performance from award-winning international megastar Jennifer Hudson, and a spectacular ensemble performance, choreographed by Beth Honan to Britney Spear’s Toxic, showcasing the talents of the twenty finalists once more.

Next week’s show will be broadcast at 6.45pm, with the results show at 8.50pm.

Cat Deeley has said there is no reason that ‘charming’ Cheryl Cole couldn’t crack America.

The British beauty, who has carved out a successful presenting career for herself in the states and currently presents Nigel Lythgoe’s So You Think You Can Dance in both America and the UK, said the public will ‘love’ the X Factor judge, when she launches her career across the Atlantic.

Cat, 37, told The Sun: “Cheryl is just completely charming.

“The whole public love her and she’s the nation’s sweetheart – I don’t see why she wouldn’t be that in America too.

“People talk about the accent all the time – maybe they would understand her, maybe they wouldn’t.

“It’s difficult to tell but I don’t see it as a stumbling block. She could do something about that anyway if she needed to.”

But Cat thinks it will be hard for Cheryl if she does land a job on Simon Cowell’s new American X Factor, as the pressure on the stars involved to make the show a success will be huge. She added:

“It’s going to be an awful lot of pressure.

“It’s going to be one of the most expensive TV shows ever made and it’s going to have big expectations behind it.”

It’s a hugely popular format in America, but So You Think You Can Dance is not faring so well in the UK.

Insiders say BBC bosses are considering axing the reality TV show, as it isn’t drawing in enough viewers to warrant the large fees they pay judges Nigel Lythgoe, Arlene Phillips, Sisco Gomez and Louise Redknapp.

The first series of the dance competition regularly attracted more than seven million viewers each week, however on Saturday night, as the live stages of the competition kicked off, only 3.6 million viewers tuned in. To put this is perspective, more than 5 million watched ITV’s Sing If You Can at the same time and later 10.45 people tuned into Britain’s Got Talent.

A source told The Mirror:

“Saturday was a real hammer blow for BBC1 bosses. It was blown out of the water all night by ITV, and So You Think You Can Dance has been picked out as the weak link. Everyone knows Britain’s Got Talent is going to get huge viewing figures, but BBC1 should be right up there with the rest of the schedule.

“But it looks as though viewers have got bored of So You Think You Can Dance, which has gone into freefall in terms of viewing figures.

“Producers are struggling to halt the decline, and senior bosses have lost patience with the format. It’s unlikely there’ll be another series.”

We’re gutted by this news, as we really love SYTYCD. We were backstage for Saturday’s live show and the talent was truly phenomenal. However it seems people would rather watch performers with bulgy eyeballs, dancing dogs and old men strutting their stuff.

Arlene Phillips has admitted that she struggles to maintain her svelte figure.

The So You Think You Can Dance judge told The Mirror that she has battled with her weight and been on diets since she was just fifteen years old and finds it really ‘hard’ because she thinks about food all the time.

The 67 year old – who we met on Saturday night and found absolutely stunning – said:

“There is a fat person who lives inside me all the time, but I don’t let them get out. Maybe I would be a lot happier if I was fat as it takes a lot of discipline to stay at my current weight of eight and a half stone. Sometimes when I wake up, I think to myself, ‘If I could just go into the fridge and raid it’. It’s hard. It’s really hard.”

“Luckily I never developed any serious eating disorders. It’s a certain mentality that lends itself to anorexia and I wasn’t like that. There is not a day gone by when I haven’t thought about what I am eating. If I’ve not physically been on a diet, then I’ve been on one in my head.”

The choreography expert, who also judged on Strictly Come Dancing until 2009, admitted that she “sadly can’t reverse the middle-aged spread”.

“I can’t look too closely in the mirror as there are lots of bits that are sagging,” she added. “You can see all my wrinkles too. I’ve had fillers and Botox but it was too painful and I haven’t had it done again. Having something like a facelift would mean taking six weeks off and I haven’t got that sort of time this year.

“I have thought about having my boobs done but a good bra has been working so far and they are quite big enough. I look at myself all the time and think, ‘I could do this and that’. But I try and make the best of what I’ve got.

“I don’t like my bingo wings and upper arms but I wear tops or dresses with short sleeves to cover them up.”

“However, I realise that I am never going to be stick thin. I’ve always been a cross between an apple and pear shape, and I really am someone who is naturally round!”

The 18 year old fell in love with dancing and sparkly costumes as a child. Whilst she has no formal dance training, Paige is now taking a BTEC in dance at Walsall College and hopes to continue studying to degree level.

Much of Paige’s spare time is devoted to dance classes and competitions, and she holds many titles to her name, including European Champion in disco freestyle.

Naturally shy, it’s dancing that brings Paige out of her shell, and her experience on the show so far has given her the confidence boost she’s been waiting for.

Paige knows the standard in the show is high, but despite her lack of training, hopes her passion will drive her through the competition.

Paige’s love of dance comes from her father, who passed away 3 years ago. She believes he would be delighted with what she’s achieved. With her close-knit family behind her, Paige says she’s looking forward to “Entertaining the public and making my family, friends and home town proud”.

Sweet, smiley and modest ballerina, who wants to be pushed out of her comfort zone

Katrina left her home in Plymouth at 13 to train at The Royal Ballet School in London. During her time there, she performed at such venues as Buckingham Palace and the Royal Opera House, and was awarded the school’s Moreton award for Choreography. Katrina has also danced competitively, and was a Young British Dancer of the Year finalist in 2008.

Having finished training in London, Katrina now works at her mother’s contemporary dance school in Plymouth, choreographing and teaching young children.
Although confident in her technique and ability in ballet, Katrina hopes the competition will teach her to be more headstrong and confident in her performances.
Katrina shares her love of dance with her grandfather, who has been her father figure for many years. After training away from home for many years, Katrina hopes that being on the show will give her grandfather a chance to finally see her perform.
Katrina has always loved other styles of dance, and even spent several months at Central School to gain broader experience. She hopes the live shows will be her chance to prove her versatility, and “to grow and improve in different styles of dance”.
