Stephen Mulhern has admitted that he doesn’t get the hype surrounding X Factor contestant Janet Devlin.

The Northern Irish teenager has been tipped to win the ITV show ever since her first audition aired back in August and people have been raving about her performances ever since.

Fans of the series seem to have warmed to not just her vocal skills but her timid nature and quirky personality, but Mulhern just doesn’t see the appeal.

He told Star magazine:

“I don’t get Janet Devlin. I don’t think she’ll win.”

The Britain’s Got More Talent host also admitted that he has gone off Frankie Cocozza, saying that while he loved his cheeky chappy persona for his first audition, he doesn’t like the direction he has taken for the live shows.

Mulhern added:

“To begin with I thought Frankie was going to win. But then all of a sudden, everything that I liked about Frankie has now gone. He came to the auditions as this cheeky chappy that all the girls loved, and now they’ve gothed him up and he’s like a character of himself.”

Stephen Mulhern has detailed his Britain’s Got Talent judging wishlist.

After it was revealed that Michael McIntyre will not be returning to the show for the 2012 series and that David Hasselhoff may have been sacked from the panel, the amateur magician admitted that he would loved to see both Adele and Peter Kay joining the lineup.

The 34-year-old star – who presents ITV2 spin-off show ‘Britain’s Got More Talent’ – claims that the ‘Rolling In The Deep’ hitmaker and the TV funnyman would be “exceptionally good” replacements for the outgoing panel members.

He told BANG Showbiz: “If I was asked who I want on that panel, I would go for someone like Adele. She’d be an amazing choice in terms of the music side of things.

“But in terms of an entertainer I’d love Peter Kay to do it. I think he’d be exceptionally good. For me personally, I want a comedian or a magician to win the show, I don’t necessarily want to see another singer to win next year.”

It has been rumoured that show boss Simon Cowell has asked former ‘X Factor’ judges Cheryl Cole and Dannii Minogue to join the show, but Stephen thinks this would be a bad call, as they are both too similar to current judge Amanda Holden.

Speaking as he launched the Febreze ‘breathe happy’ campaign, Stephen said:

“I don’t know it would work with either of them actually. I know Dannii does ‘Australia’s Got Talent’, she was on ‘This Morning’ recently and she hinted that she’d been spoken to about ‘BGT’.

“Cheryl’s a very good judge and we know that from ‘X Factor’. But Cheryl is too close to Amanda in terms of Amanda’s a West End performer and actress so she gives very good constructive criticism in terms of musical performance. I think Cheryl is quite close to that, as is Dannii. Have all three!”

Stephen Mulhern has confessed that he’s like to see Adele replacing David Hasselhoff on next year’s Britain’s Got Talent series.

It was reported last month that ITV bosses wanted rid of the Baywatch star and were already on the hunt for a new expert to join Amanda Holden and Michael McIntyre on the judging panel.

Mulhern – who fronts ITV2 spinoff show Britain’s Got More Talent – agrees with producers and has his mind made up about who he’d like to see advising contestants on the talent competition. He tipped Adele and added to The Sun:

“She’d add something completely different.”

Main show presenters Ant and Dec like Mulhern’s plan and also think the ‘Rolling In The Deep’ himaker would be a great addition. Dec said:

“She’d be good. She’s been there and is down to earth.”

But they have another star in mind if Adele’s schedule is too full. The telly duo think former X Factor judge Cheryl Cole would also fit in and added:

“Cheryl would be great on the show and we’ve heard Simon wants her for it.

“We love her as a fellow Geordie, so we’ll always back her.

“We’d be able to understand her — and she’d be able to understand us!”

Stephen Mulhern will make his judging panel debut on Born To Shine this Sunday night.

The 34 year old star is used to interviewing the judges on his Britain’s Got Talent spinoff show, Britain’s Got More Talent, however this weekend he will be stepping into their shoes as he replaces Dancing On Ice judge Jason Gardiner, as the Australian star is attending a friend’s wedding.

Speaking about his new role on the ITV1 show, which sees celebrities being mentored by talented teenagers in a completely new skill, Mulhern told The Sun:

“I’ve been watching the master Simon Cowell at work on ITV for five years so I’m hoping some of his technique has rubbed off on me.”

Britain’s Got More Talent presenter Stephen Mulhern has admitted that he was shocked that Jai McDowall won Britain’s Got Talent on Saturday night, because he almost forgot he was in the final.

McDowall became the shock winner of the ITV show at the weekend, surprisingly beating bookies’ favourite Ronan Parke and Mulhern admittted that he always felt like the ‘underdog’ of the series.

“I forgot that Jai was even in the competition,” Mulhern said on This Morning.

“He was like the underdog. You only saw him a couple of times,” he added.

The presenter also claimed that he thinks the recent fix furore surrounding Ronan, affected his chances of winning the show on Saturday. He explained:

“Do you know something, I don’t think it helped. If people are going to be influenced by what they read, and we all know they are, of course it’s not going to help.”

Stephen Mulhern has attempted a little bit of damage limitation work on behalf of Britain’s Got Talent bosses today.

Many viewers were shocked when watching last night’s semi final, when talented singer Jessica Hobson broke down in tears after being criticised by Simon Cowell.

The music mogul hated her song choice of Beyonce’s ‘Single Ladies’, the arrangement of the track and also the fact that she left her trusty piano to attempt a dodgy dance routine for the second half of her performance.

However, as he gave his opinions, the 19 year old started sobbing and confessed that she wasn’t allowed to choose her own song for the semi finals show.

Many viewers took to forums and social networking sites to complain about the move and a fan commented on our blog post:

I felt terrible for Jessica just goes to prove that it all set up! What’s really nasty is that they set her up to knock her down as it was Simon (whose bloody show it is) that got her to do something she was clearly not happy with!

Another blasted:

Not her choice of song and the dance act had their music changed giving them 6 days to rehearse.It`s like somebody wanted to reduce their chances.

However, Britain’s Got More Talent presenter Stephen Mulhern has attempted to make light of the situation and speaking on This Morning, he said:

The reality is, the producers want the show to be right and they want performers and the auditionees to be the best they can be. So they’ll help them, they’ll support them, they’ll guide them.

She’s amazing at the piano, I wish she’d stayed there at the piano but it just didn’t work out.

Stephen Mulhern has admitted that he wouldn’t be surprised if Mexican Mayhem made the live semi finals of Britain’s Got Talent his year, even though one third of the act refused to perform on stage.

On Saturday night, viewers of the ITV show were introduced to Melissa and her two long haired Chihuahuas Tucker and Twizzle and when they trio took to the stage and Mel tried to get them to complete a strange Mexican themed assault course, Twizzle just wandered aimlessly about while poor old Tucker carried the whole act.

Michael McIntyre loved the unintended comedy aspect of the performance and Britain’s Got More Talent presenter Mulhern, thinks this sort of unpredictability may be just what’s needed on the live shows.

Speaking on This Morning he said:

Animal acts are so unpredictable. This turned into a comedy act which was just amazing.

It wouldn’t surprise me if that sort of act did make it to the semi finals, even though it went horrendously wrong. Because what we do need in the semis is stuff that’s unpredictable.

Stephen Mulhern has admitted that he thinks Amanda Holden was right to compare dance troupe Abyss to former series winners Diversity, when they tried out for Britain’s Got Talent recently.

The street dance crew were seen on Saturday night’s episode, arguing with Holden, after she told them:

“Abyss, I thought you were good and I did think there were some great moves in there, but I don’t think that you are as good as the standard that’s already been set on this show. I cannot help but have to compare you to Diversity, sorry.”

Speaking on This Morning, Mulhern – who presents the ITV2 spin off show Britain’s Got More Talent – agreed with Amanda and told Phillip Schofield and Jenni Falconer:

Is it fair to compare the dance acts with Diversity? I do think it’s fair and I agree with Amanda.

He added:

Diversity have been our winners and you’ve got to aim for something. For any dance act to claim ‘you can’t compare us,’ well that will always happen. They started arguing back and saying ‘you can’t do that’, well they’re the judges and actually they can.

Jenni also took Holden’s side, saying:

They weren’t as tight as Diversity and Flawless.

Stephen Mulhern has admitted that he was glad the audience finally made themselves heard on Saturday night’s Britain’s Got talent show.

The crowd erupted in frustration, after Michael McIntyre and Amanda Holden refused to put Royal Marine service band ‘The Highway Men’ through to the next round, despite the fact that they wowed the theatre with their drumming routine.

After show presenters Ant and Dec took to the stage to champion the group and along with the audience, begged the panellists to change their mind, both judges consented and agreed to side with The Hoff and send the band through to the next stage.

Speaking about the change of direction on This Morning, Britain’s Got More Talent presenter Stephen said:

They always say about the fourth judge being the audience, well at long last that fourth judge had their say, in a very dramatic way.

The atmosphere in the auditorium was incredible and when you look at the act you think, I can see that on the Royal Variety Show. We’ve seen it in the past and it really worked. Ant and Dec loved them.

Sadly The Highway Men did not get the chance to appear on the live semi final’s of the ITV show, as they were forced to pull out of a later London tryout, because some of their members were called in to cover for military colleagues on duty at the Royal Wedding.

Stephen Mulhern has agreed with Amanda Holden’s decision to stop New Bounce singing when they auditioned for Britain’s Got Talent, because they were out of tune.

Mitchell, 16, James, 12, Kuan, 13 and MJ, 12 tried out for the judges in Manchester, but after only one verse of Bruno Mars’ Just The Way You Are, Holden raised her hand and asked them to start their second song choice.

The young band then sang ‘All My Life’ by K-C and JoJo and were granted a place in the next round by The Hoff and Amanda.

On Holden’s decision to give the boys a second chance, Britain’s Got More Talent presenter Mulhern said:

For the first time I think she was right, because if you listen to them, they are quite out really. I don’t normally agree with the stopping, but here I did because I think they were out of tune and then they got their second chance.

Speaking on This Morning, Stephen went on to claim that the judging panel are more difficult to please this series, adding:

Also, the judges are quite strong this year and no matter what age you are, they’re not going to take any prisoners.
