As fans of American Idol will doubtless know, both Steve Tyler and Jennifer Lopez have quit their roles as judges ahead of the new series, and there’s even some speculation that long serving judge Randy Jackson may follow suit.
So, it’s fair to say there’s something of a scramble going on right now to line up a new judging panel, but according to TMZ today, there are no shortage of celebs who have their eye on an American Idol job, including veteran singer, 70 year old Aretha Franklin.
Apparently, Aretha sent an email to Fox this weekend saying, “Yes, I am interested as a judge.”
And of course, Aretha’s career in music goes back decades, and in her time, she’s won 18 Grammy awards and countless other accolades.
However, neither Freemantle Media – the makers of Idol – nor the Fox Network have as yet commented on whether they would be interested in recruiting Aretha… Read more & comment »

The PA report today that Aerosmith front man Steve Tyler is quitting his role as a judge on American Idol in order to rededicate himself to the band…
Which on one hand is great news – more Aerosmith is always good news – but on the other, it sucks royally, because I loved watching Steve on Idol.
In a statement about his decision to leave the show, Steve said, “It’s time to bring rock back.”
He added, “I’ve decided it’s time for me to let go of my mistress American Idol before she boils my rabbit…
“I strayed from my first love, Aerosmith, and I’m back – but instead of begging on my hands and knees, I got two fists in the air and I’m kicking the door open with my band.” Read more & comment »

After being sensationally sacked from her judging position on the X Factor USA half way through the season, what better way for Cheryl Cole to reap revenge on dastardly Simon Cowell than by signing up to be a judge on American rival talent show, American Idol?
Ever since her controversial exit from the US version of the show that earned her a ‘nation’s sweetheart’ badge, Cheryl Cole has remained quiet about her future plan, whilst the rest of the world went into speculation overdrive, linking her to just about anything that may slightly pee music mogul, Cowell, off.

Steve Tyler has admitted that he doesn’t know why he agreed to do American Idol.
The Aerosmith frontman will be judging hopefuls on the Fox reality TV show when it returns later this month and speaking at the winter TV critics press tour, the big mouthed star pondered:

Steven Tyler struggles to be honest with terrible ‘American Idol’ hopefuls.
The Aerosmith frontman – who joined the judging panel for the new season of the US TV talent search show – doesn’t want to insult anyone or shatter their ambitions if they are not very good.
He admitted: “It’s hard when you have a kid who’s 15 years old, who’s been watching ‘American Idol’ for the last 10 years. Some of them were awful. I just say something like, ‘Did you bump your head on the way in?’
“I’m really not one for giving insults. They have a voice and I don’t want them not singing to their kids when they grow up.”

It was the worst kept showbiz secret in history but yesterday American Idol bosses finally revealed what was already public knowledge, Jennifer Lopez and Steve Tyler are joining the judging panel.
The pair will join the only remaining judge from last season, Randy Jackson at auditions later this year. They replace Simon Cowell, who left to work on his new X Factor show, Ellen DeGeneres, who left to concentrate on her chat show and Kara DioGuardi, who bosses claim left of her own choice but we still think she was pushed.
