ITV style experts Trinny and Susannah return to screens in a brand new series with a twist – Trinny and Susannah Meet Their Match.

Faced with an exciting new challenge, they are tasked with applying their style expertise to three groups or ‘tribes’ whose outward appearance reflects a specific, collective identity – dog lovers, sex bombs and country ladies.

But before they can start making any changes, the tables are turned and – after 15 years of styling the nation – Trinny and Susannah must allow themselves to be restyled.

The girls meet a shining example of each group and spend 24 hours in their life – getting to know them, taking part in their activities and, yes, dressing like them to understand why they dress the way they do.

They take on two very different factions within the doggie brigade – the breeders always covered in dog hairs and drool who spend all their free time walking their dogs, and, at the other end of the spectrum, ladies who love to show dogs, spend hours grooming them and pride themselves on having outfits to match their pampered pooches.

In Sex Bombs, Trinny and Susannah will come up against women who really know what they want. Dressed to kill in all their finery – the more mature ladies who love to dress to impress regardless of their age.

But first, the girls turn their attention to ladies of an altogether more demure nature….

In programme one Trinny and Susannah take on the Country Ladies – pillars of their communities including the town mayor, a Sunday school teacher and the local vicar.

Trinny says: “It’s like slightly looking at the Queen mum. There’s an element of that, like, ‘Should we change what is quintessentially an element of Britishness that is very inoffensive?’”

Making over Trinny in their own image are Mayor Louise and bee keeper Anne. Louise tells Trinny that she is 38, prompting the shocked response: “I thought you were about 50.”

While Trinny is introduced to the world of crocheted cardigans and flat sensible shoes, Susannah comes to terms with the practicalities of wearing a dog collar when she is made over by two lady vicars.

Now donning the appropriate group ‘uniform’, Trinny is despatched to spend 24 hours living the life of Mayor Louise Eastwood and Susannah to the home of 53-year-old vicar Rosie Harper and her husband Tim – who is also a vicar.

Rosie explains: “I want to let people know that I’m normal. That you don’t have to be weird and frumpy and away with the fairies to be a Christian.”

Rosie’s husband Tim tells Susannah: “The shoes are very important as well, because when people are kneeling down at the communion rail, they’re looking down, they see your shoes.”

When Susannah reflects that this would mean painted toe nails were out of the question Rosie tells her: “Someone wrote in to the Church Times once and said, ‘Our new lady vicar had painted finger nails and it ruined my Christmas.’”

At Louise’s home, Trinny meets the mayor’s ten-year-old daughter Sophie – who has long been Louise’s harshest fashion critic.

She tells Trinny: “My grandma, she wears nearly all the same skirts as my mum.”

Louise later defends her outfit choices explaining that she: “Feels she dresses the part” and that low cut dresses would be: “Doing injustice to the badge of office.”

Sophie isn’t the only child with some harsh criticism of Louise’s style. When Trinny goes with Louise to a local school one young boy remarks that Louise: “Looks like she’s been in an old [person’s] home.”

Following her visit to the school, Louise concedes to Trinny that she could do with looking a little younger.

Trinny agrees: “We need to drop the granny, honey. We need to find the sexy woman inside. I know she’s lurking there.”

Having learned that the black dog collar is one of the biggest obstacles in dressing a female vicar, Susannah tackles the Bishop of Buckingham to ask why something more feminine hasn’t been designed.

He responds: “Well, I think there could be. You’d need a bit of creativity about it. But I think that, whatever you designed, I think it would have to be something that people could recognise in that way.”

Susannah goes with Rosie to meet some of her parishioners and seek their advice and support in restyling Rosie.

One parishioner explains: “The female priests have got to be seen to be the same as the male priests. So they’ve got to wear the same. It is a burden to wear but, you know, the Church of England doesn’t change very quickly.”

Susannah asks the group: “If we come up with an alternative, or a couple of alternatives, will you back Rosie on it? It would be great to have your support.”

Rosie says: “I love the thought of being a bit more modern and less ladies of the parish.”

Back in their own clothes, and having listened and learned, it’s time for Trinny and Susannah to have their say – but this tribe won’t bow down easily.

“You’re such an interesting person,” Susannah tells bee-keeper Ann, “But you’re so boring in what you wear.”

Sunday school teacher Emma says: “Your moral values are all far more important than the clothes you wear.” And is less than impressed when Susannah suggests a lower neckline.

Trinny tries some shock therapy with pattern-phobic Louise and Susannah has a surprise for the lady vicars – redesigned dog collars in different colours and materials to bring a more feminine edge.

Rosie later reveals: “The most valuable thing for me has been having you [Susannah] understand my dilemma,” prompting a few tears from Susannah.

Trinny reflects: “It’s been really good material working with these women. Because it’s been very important, more than any other show, to look at their situation and their responsibility within their community.”

At the village fete Trinny and Susannah reveal the ladies’ new looks. But with emotions running high and eleven country ladies to please – have Trinny and Susannah finally met their match?

Tired of seeing ladies dressed in tracksuits, fleeces, trainers and parka jackets they want people to embrace a little bit of glamour in their wardrobes and their lives.

Recruiting five ladies who have lost their sparkle, Trinny and Susannah set about glamorising them for a night on the town and showing them how they can retain their new look everyday. Then it’s time for a bigger challenge as they revamp the wardrobes of an entire team of factory workers to prove to the nation that a little bit of glamour can go a long way.

The girls invite 100 women from across Britain, who feel that they have lost their sparkle, to a famous London night spot to find out why they no longer like to dress up.

Surprised by just how poorly dressed the ladies are, Susannah says: “Look at you all, you look like truck drivers. You didn’t even bother to make an effort to come and see us today. Shame on you all.”

Trinny and Susannah choose five ladies they feel are in desperate need of their help to take for a super glam makeover, including 33-year-old tomboy Diane – who really is a truck driver.

“I would love to feel good, I would love to throw on a dress and feel like…yeah,” says Diane. “I’ve just always known boys and been around men, and been in a men’s environment. You just tend to get to be one of the men.”

Having successfully transformed their five ladies, Trinny and Susannah are ready for an even bigger challenge and set off to meet a team of factory workers at the John Smedley knitwear factory in Derbyshire. The factory has over 300 workers and the girls want to see if they can glamorise an entire workforce.

Susannah says: “We thought ‘where is it hardest to dress up?’ And that’s on the factory floor.”

With trepidation Trinny and Susannah meet the team – their mission is to make the reluctant work force change for ‘dress up’ rather than ‘dress down’ Friday.

Trinny and Susannah have a hard time convincing the workers, who see no reason to dress up for work, that they should make an effort for themselves and each other. So they select four members of staff to be their ‘ambassadors for change’ to help convince the rest of the factory to give glamour a go.

One of the ambassadors, 19-year-old Sahara, recently had a devastating bowel disease and now wears a colostomy bag. The illness made her lose a lot of weight so she hid her thin frame and bag with loose clothes. Having now regained her figure, she undergoes the biggest transformation of all the volunteers.

Top hairdresser Richard Ward is on hand to revamp Sahara’s fine, lifeless hair that suffered due to her illness while Trinny and Susannah address her wardrobe.

A tearful Sahara says of her transformation: “I can’t say I’ve looked in the mirror and looked at my face and thought I looked nice any time lately, sometimes when I look in the mirror I think I still look poorly. I don’t look poorly now.”

All the glamorous re-styles are a success – but will the rest of the factory workers follow suit? If they do there’s a treat in store in the form of a trip to Chatsworth House for a night of pure glamour and decadence.

Trinny and Susannah return the next morning and, although it appears most of the workers have embraced the new look and made more effort for their working day, some people have ignored the girls advice and are still in their boring jeans and t-shirts.

Will the girls be able to coax them out of their comfort zones, if even just for one special day?

Trinny and Susannah have a passion for colour, but it is a passion the rest of the nation appears not to share.

Embarking on a mission to champion colour, the girls aim to dispel the myth that black is slimming, devise a set of colour rules that the whole nation can follow and launch a campaign to bring colour back to the streets of Britain.

Beginning their campaign in the heart of London, Trinny and Susannah meet women from all over Britain who have journeyed to their famous pink pod to address their colour phobia.

Inspired by one of the worst offenders they meet in the pod, 31-year-old Natalie, Trinny and Susannah travel to her home in Essex to take their campaign to the suburbs.

“It’s got to the extent now where I go to shops and I’ve even been known to go home and dye items of clothes to be black,” says Natalie.

With the extent of the task ahead becoming clearer, Trinny and Susannah decide that if they can get the worst die hard black addicts they’ve met to change their ways, they will inspire the rest of the nation.

Tackling head-on the nation’s belief that black is slimming, Trinny and Susannah devise a series of tests to work out whether colour affects how we judge weight, size and age – with shocking results.

Next the girls take the challenge further, setting out to prove that the right colours are out there for everyone, and to find out what they are.

Flicking through old photographs, Trinny and Susannah take a look back over their past colour failures before having a makeover of their own to show how hair, make-up and complexion effect what colours look best.

“There is a world of colour open to everyone,” says Susannah, “you’ve just got to choose the right tones.”

Having learnt the fundamentals of colour at Trinny and Susannah’s ‘Colour clinic’ the potential converts are sent on a shopping trip armed with their own personal colour pallet – but can they stick to Trinny and Susannah’s colourful rules or will they fade to black?

The British bottom has been forgotten – out of sight, out of mind and, for some, a source of horror.

Trinny and Susannah take a group of ladies who are ‘bottom-phobic’ on a journey to help them learn to love and dress their bums.

To kick start their mission Trinny and Susannah pose nude for a life drawing class, where the features of the paintings are their backsides.

Having dealt with many women’s, and men’s, body issues in previous programmes, the girls know they’re in for a tough task to make women be objective about their bottoms.

Trinny: “People’s perception of their body and the reality is so different. Whenever we deal with women and we’re looking at their body and we ask them what they dislike of their body, they distort times half again the size of the area they don’t like the most.”

So they take their pink pod back on the road and invite women to share their bottom woes with them. ‘Saggy’, ‘big and flat’, ‘too wide’ and ‘not what it used to be’ seem to be the most common complaints from ladies who loathe their derrieres.

Trinny and Susannah believe some women have begun to neglect their bums, and in an attempt to cover up something they think is horrible, they’re actually making it worse by dressing badly. To illustrate this point they pluck peachy bottomed Paula from the pink pod and treat her to an instant makeover.

Paula, a 35-year-old mum, feels she has gone from being proud of her bum to covering it up. But the girls think it’s the best bottom they’ve seen so far.

Susannah: “You have a fantastic arse and I think we should show you how to dress it properly as I think it’s a shame for you to feel anything but pride in your bottom.”

Having met many women with genuine fear and loathing for their behinds, Trinny and Susannah invite eight of the most bottom phobic ladies they’ve met to a life sculpture gallery in Brighton. They’re there to have their bottoms cast by award winning sculptor Jamie McCartney to create a perfect duplicate of their derriere.

Trinny explains: “It’s similar to when Susannah and I saw our bottoms in the art class, because if they can see their bottoms objectively I think they would really learn to appreciate them more.”

30-year-old mum of two Sarah de la Porte has a bottom which has made her the butt of all the family jokes.

Sarah says: “My dad always says it’s like two ferrets trying to escape and my other half says he always has the urge to park his bike in it.”

32-year-old Tamara feels she’s inherited her big bum.

She says: “My bum has always been with me it doesn’t matter how big or small I’ve been it’s always been quite large, it runs in the family. I like it when it’s hidden under clothes but when it’s off and it’s naked I hate it.”

And 42-year-old Angela Cook has a classically British problem – a big bum and a tiny waist she finds impossible to dress.

“Most people go shopping because they want to go shopping, it’s fun, it’s exciting, you get new things to wear. Whereas I go shopping and I come home and want to jump off a bridge,” says Angela.

Despite their reservations the ladies join Trinny & Susannah as they disrobe at a gallery in Brighton to begin the process of having their bottoms cast ready to be modelled into bronze-coloured sculptures. Once they’ve all been completed, the girls gather the ladies at a London art gallery where their bottoms are privately displayed for them.

Excitement gives way to disappointment as they get up close and personal with their bottoms and most find that their original fears are worse than they thought, with a few women even reduced to tears. Trinny and Susannah try to persuade them to get through the negatives and find something positive with their beautiful bronze behinds.

Trinny: “Don’t be so British and just look at the negative, I’m sorry. This is something we’re here today to try and get through and really try and appreciate our bottoms.”

Slowly they start to see the positive, and take small steps to beginning to love their behinds.

Next up Susannah takes on self-confessedly big-bummed Sarah and shopaphobic Angela to show them that learning to love your bottom is an easier solution than the hard work it would take to physically change it. She even manages to find Angela the perfect pair of trousers to fit her curvy large bottom and her tiny waist.

Continuing their message that the ‘Trinny and Susannah way’ is the best way, the girls spread their makeover message with a master class in wearing the right type of pants. But first they check out the most criminal of all under garment – the bikini brief knickers.

“This is the VPL maker, the visible panty line creator,” says Susannah. “You see women wearing them everywhere.”

In an attempt to educate ladies about solving bottom problems they gather four ladies with classic bottom shapes, which should never brush with a bikini brief. Dressed in the same unforgiving wrap dress they illustrate the magic of support pants to help flat bottoms, big and round bottoms, saddle bags and the saggy bum.

Trinny takes two of her bottom hating ladies, Tracey and Sarah, to Lancashire University to meet some experts who study the science of body movement and posture. She wants to teach them how to walk to make the most of their bottom.

Trinny says: “I believe the key to a sexy bum is how you move it, and today is about showing how high heels can really help that. They affect your posture, they make you aware of your bum, and with real practice they can give you a great swing.”

After all the ladies are successfully made over, Trinny and Susannah invite female shoppers from London’s Covent Garden to a hotel nearby to witness the transformations of the eight bum hating ladies as they show off their re-vamped figures and show the world that it is possible for everyone to love their bums.

British fashionistas, Trinny and Susannah, have signed a US TV deal with Disney.

Famously slender style guru Trinny Woodall was shocked to discover she has the so-called fat gene FTO, while her co-presenter Susannah Constantine does not.

The girls took a DNA test for their new ITV series The Great British Body, along with over hundred other volunteers as part of an investigation in to the gene. It is believed to increase a person’s propensity to put on weight if they are a carrier, and may increase their weight by up to half a stone compared to those who don’t have the gene.

Susannah said: “I was astonished, and over the moon. I’m not going to pretend I’m going to be magnanimous in victory…I know it’s down to genes and no one can help it [the result], but I’m quite elated! And meanwhile my fat friend here [to Trinny] I don’t know what you’re going to do?!”

Trinny: “I’m probably going to have my croissant and cappuccino!”

Later Trinny said: “I expected to be told I didn’t have the fat gene, so it was quite a surprise. But upon reflection I have realised that my father has a propensity to a bit of a tummy and it has probably come from his side of the family so it makes sense.”

Trinny adds: “I am a healthy eater, and feel it makes no difference to how I will maintain my figure from now on as I am happy with it already.”

While the girls’ results caused some jokes between the two of them, ‘the results from wider testing conducted for the series’ uncovered that a person with the gene is more likely to be overweight or obese.

In the first experiment of its kind, conducted in a mobile laboratory in approximately five to six hours the DNA test for the so-called fat gene FTO discovered that the majority of carriers of the gene had a BMI of over 25. The gene, the first related to a person’s weight to be discovered, is believed to increase a person’s propensity to gain weight, and can potentially add almost half a stone in weight.

Initially the experiment hoped to analyse the geographical spread of the gene across the UK with volunteers representative of counties across the country invited to take part. But the results showed a more surprising outcome relating to percentage body fat.

Each person can inherit no copies, one copy or two copies of the gene from their parents, and of those tested who had two copies, 64 per cent had a BMI of over 25, as did 54 per cent of people with one copy of the gene, compared with only 44 per cent of individuals with no copies of the gene.

Those with the fat gene also had a higher percentage of body fat, even if they had a healthy BMI. The people with no fat gene had on average 30.4 percent body fat, the people with one copy of the fat gene had 31.9 percent body fat, and those with two copies of the gene had an average 35.5 percent body fat – five percent more than those with no copies of the gene.

The study was carried out by population geneticist Dr Jim Wilson of Edinburgh University and EthnoAncestry. He was surprised by the affect the fat gene appears to have on a person’s body fat level, even if they are a healthy weight.

He says: “One of the main results when we looked at percentage body fat, and this is something you can’t see from the outside, people who had no copies of this gene on average had 30 percent body fat but people who had 2 copies of the so-called fat gene had over 35 percent of body fat on average. So it’s quite a bit difference, quite a strong effect that we’re seeing from this one gene.

“We could also see the effect of the gene on people with a BMI below 25, which is the healthy range. People in this group with two copies of the gene had on average seven percent more body fat than those with no copies of the gene.”

Of all the people tested 37 percent of people had no copies of the fat gene (TT), with 49 percent carrying one copy of the gene (AT) and 14 percentof people carrying two copies of the gene (AA).

Volunteers from counties across the country were invited to take part in the experiment at roadshows for the series in Gateshead, Brighton and Birmingham. The experiment was carried out in a mobile laboratory in approximately five hours, when the test usually takes at least two weeks two complete.

All those who took part were asked to complete a questionnaire about their diet and lifestyle, in order to analyse their results more accurately.

They were divided into three lifestyle groups – healthy diet and good exercise, average diet and some exercise, and bad diet and low levels of exercise. These risk factors are already well known to affect a person’s weight, body fat and health.

Alongside diet and lifestyle, the effects of a third risk factor – the gene – still need further study to determine how the gene actually behaves. But this study has shown that when comparing results from volunteers with no fat gene and lifestyle group one (no risk factors) against people with two copies of the fat gene and lifestyle groups two and three (all the risk factors), there is a visible difference of over a stone in weight.

Dr Wilson says: “Every way we looked at the results – percentage body fat, BMI, the numbers overweight – we saw the same pattern that those with two copies (AA) had more body fat, higher BMI or were more likely to be overweight than those with no copies (TT), while those with one copy (AT) tended to be in between.

“When we factored in diet and exercise things were even clearer – those with two copies and an unhealthy lifestyle tended to be the fattest.

“What is important is that within each group (TT, AT, AA) there was still a lot of diversity – there are fat people with no copies of this gene, and thin people with two copies – it’s all about a propensity to be fat, not a definitive prediction,” says Dr Wilson.

The results are an early indicator that there is potentially a link between genes and a person’s likelihood of becoming obese, as signs suggest that people with two copies of the FTO gene may have to work harder to maintain a healthy weight, especially as they age or if they are women.

Dr Wilson explains: “Sex is also an important factor, with women being on average 10% fatter than men, we also get fatter as we age. There will also be other genes involved, indeed one was found less than a month ago, so we still don’t have the full picture, so it was all the more interesting that the FTO gene’s effects could be clearly picked up.”

The experiment can be seen in action as part of The Great British Body which transmits on Monday 2nd, Tuesday 3rd and Wednesday 4th June at 9pm on ITV1.

In a brand new three part event for ITV1, Trinny and Susannah tour the UK to investigate the British public’s bodies in an effort to persuade people the lose their inhibitions and reveal to them what they love and what they hate about themselves.

The girls find out the nation’s vital statistics in a specially commissioned survey for the series, and lead vast body audits at three roadshows across the country in Gateshead, Brighton and Birmingham.

Their aim? To find two extraordinary people, a man and a woman, to represent Britain’s finest forms and be immortalised in a giant naked sculpture on the Sussex downs. More importantly, they must find hundreds of volunteers willing to strip to their bare essentials and be part of the amazing stunt.

Explaining the reason for their latest mission, Susannah says: “Trinny and I are known for dressing people, this time we’re going to be known for undressing people.

“We thought the British public suffered from a negative view about the nation’s body shape – that we’re overweight, unattractive, that we feel pressurised to look a certain way. So we want people to really look at themselves objectively, they’ll then realise that it’s not that way at all.”

“Ultimately we want to create a huge celebration of the British body. There’s always safety in numbers, and if people think they have a body that doesn’t measure up to an ideal what we want them to discover is that they are in fact the average,” says Trinny.

But there’s a catch – everyone who wants to be part of the sculpture absolutely has to get naked.

Trinny says: “I think people should get naked and the reason we feel very strongly about it is we never ask people to do something we don’t do, so we will get naked.

“It’s a celebration on a hillside in the most beautiful English countryside, of saying ‘as you are today is just fine’,” she says.

In order to get to grips with the nations naked forms and compile their body data, Trinny and Susannah arm themselves with a team of experts to help them on the roadshows.

They also reveal some of the most surprising facts unearthed in a body survey of over 2000 people carried out exclusively for the series.

A man in uniform may be every woman’s fantasy but the reality of Britain’s company attire is far from flattering. From paramedics to traffic wardens, dinner ladies to couriers, the country’s badly dressed workforce are about to get a serious dressing down.

Despite being worth a massive £430 million pounds a year, Trinny and Susannah soon discover, thanks to the pink pod, that the nation’s uniforms are largely made up of ‘fleeces, shirts, and ill-fitting trousers’.

In an attempt to revamp one company’s uniform, the girls have joined force with supermarket chain Somerfield to redesign their uniform to accommodate 42,000 workers. They head to Birmingham to road test the existing uniform and work alongside the supermarket’s staff.

Susannah takes an instant dislike to the whole ensemble. “I’m coming out in a rash as I put this on.”

While Trinny mans the deli, Susannah decides eating the produce is much better than stacking it. Fellow workers describe the uniform as ‘uncomfortable’, ‘tatty’ and ‘horrible’. After their day in store the girls are armed with all the ammunition they need to fight for a new uniform.

In order to hammer home their mission, the girls invade the Somerfield annual conference, which is attended by all the store managers. They are greeted with resounding agreement when they pitch their plans, with 84% of the store managers in favour of new uniforms.

Now the girls need to road test their ability to create a uniform. They visit an all female driving school in Leeds who would like a company uniform that is fashionable and practical. In a swift fix they take the five driving instructors shopping and kit them out in figure flattering outfits of silver and grey with white shirts and practical yet stylish rain macs, all unified with a bright pink scarf to tie in with their company branding.

“The whole experience of designing the uniform for the driving school was great because it really made us think of important points like the sense of uniformity but keeping the women as individuals, colours and how important they are, corporate identity and confidence,” says Trinny.

But before they launch straight in to trying to accommodate a 42,000 strong workforce, Trinny and Susannah have a go at transforming the uniforms of the catering team at the Princess of Wales Hospital in Bridgend.

Lead by Barbara McCarthy, the team’s uniform is from a catalogue and was last changed ten years ago. Barbara presents the style experts with their uniforms for the day complete with hairnets and plastic aprons to meet health and safety guidelines.

Whilst Trinny and Susannah get down to business buttering bread and serving at the hot plate, they disagree with Barbara about being called dinner ladies, and Barbara is adamant about one thing – colour. “We definitely don’t want pink,” says Barbara.

But, it seems Trinny and Susannah think pink is the colour as they choose the ladies’ new outfits – pink, gingham and white.

“I think they’ve been watching too much Grease,” says Barabara. Despite their reservations the ladies are won over by the new pink uniforms, which are a hit amongst their colleagues.

Finally, after their two practice runs, Trinny and Susannah come up with their own uniform designs to be made for the Somerfield team. They opt for a pallet of greens fabrics with navy blue, in styles that are designed to be hard wearing, comfortable and on budget.

Trinny describes it as a ‘couture supermarket collection’ as they head back to Birmingham to present Somerfield staff with their new look.

They’ve planned a catwalk show amongst the fruit and veg, but it’s not without complications as the outfits get muddled and nothing quite fits right.

Crisis averted, the eight staff members reveal their practical but stylish new look to the store, which comprises warm, smart fitted fleeces for those who work in the freezer departments, flattering flared trousers and comfortable, long culottes for the ladies, with waistcoats and fitted long sleeve tops for the gents.

A resounding success, Trinny and Susannah receive the seal of approval from the store, and as a result Somerfield agree to remodel their uniforms. The new designs are yet to be revealed.

Tuesday 18 December 2007 8:00pm – 9:00pm on ITV1.
