The difference between the two finalists was demonstrated here as posh Zara asked politely, ‘where’s County Hall?’ and rough and ready James answered back, ‘how the hell should I know?’ It turned out that County Hall is actually London’s largest video gaming arcade and for a second time this series the location had something to do with the final task – designing an online game and a viral ad to promote it.

Lord Sugar told the candidates later on that this was a project dear to his heart as, in his own words, he was in the computer business when apples and blackberries were things you put in pies. As always with the final task the fired candidates return to assist their former rivals in winning the series and usually this process involves the two finalists picking their teams one by one however here Lord Sugar swiftly put the teams together. I’m guessing he’d done this so it didn’t turn it to a popularity contest as some of these kids looked like they always got picked last when choosing football teams, especially Ben who seems like a boy who is always put in goal. I feel that Zara drew the short straw having both Ben and Mahamed, the first two to be fired, plus notorious seven time loser Harry M. James on the other hand got best mate Harry H plus likeable and fired too soon Hannah.

The initial brainstorming session revealed why the candidates had been fired posh girl Hayley wanted a game about horses and stables while common-as-muck Lewis wanted some game where pigeons excrete on you. Eventually project manager James decided on Lizzie’s idea of a memory game but Hannah pointed out that it really wasn’t much fun. James’ second idea was to have a game in which you have to complete tasks in an office very quickly but this didn’t prove too popular when the market research was carried out. Eventually James decided that if he tweaked his office idea to make it into the Prime Minister’s cabinet room then it would become a bit more topical. James himself pointed out that he never played games and it showed as all of his ideas – later given the name Crazy Cabinet – seemed to have to do with budget deficit and the recession not really something you have to worry about with Angry Birds is it?

Zara meanwhile almost instantly thought it was a good idea to have some sort of animal as the main protagonist of her game. This concept though flew completely over the head of Mahamed who wanted a game where a boy visited his parents at a graveyard and then zombies started to attack. Eventually a pig was chosen as main character and the object of the game was to see him run away from a butcher. Originally the pig was to be named Pinky but then Nick, who in this episode described himself as a completely dispassionate observer, reminded them of the old children’s show Pinky and Perky and because of this the animal was renamed Porky Pete. Nick was pleased with the initial ideas and in his usual witty way remarked that Piggy Panic could go viral so they better call in the vet.

While half of her team worked on pig names the rest of Zara’s minions were sent off to cast the butcher for the viral commercial. Almost immediately they decided on a mountain of a man and to test out his running skills they had him chase Mahamed around the room for what seemed like an eternity while I don’t know how politically correct this scene was it was incredibly hilarious. The political incorrectness continued when Vegetarian Haya was picked to wear the pig costume for the actual shoot while aspiring film-maker Zara tried to work her artistic techniques on a scene which Nick Hewer, yes him again, reckoned could either be a complete disaster or a brilliant viral ad. Zara felt a good way to end this would be for the butcher to be tackled at the end as she liked the idea of the film having a twist not realising that this was a small promotional movie and not The Usual Suspects. James’ viral ad seemed to almost be a social satire with a down-on-his-luck older minister and a pompous young politician taking shots at each other and the public. Although I and Lord Sugar both felt the ad had no real connection to the game Karren Brady thought it was a fantastic film because James had understood that people like their adverts to be borderline offensive. A statement which baffled me completely.

When the games finally arrived it seemed that Piggy Panic appealed to someone immature like Mahamed but not someone older. Personally of the two games Crazy Cabinet looked like more of a laugh and I could see myself playing that over and over again until it got overly frustrating. At the games launch both Harrys got to dress up, Harry M was given the very flattering pig outfit, while Harry H was the policeman standing outside James’ mock-up of 10 Downing Street. While Zara’s pitch was polished and a little witty I can find her to be a little patronising at times but she was a lot less annoying than she has been in previous weeks. James meanwhile hit all the points and was better and fielding the questions, making it seem like there were endless possibilities for his game while the only spin-off from Zara’s game seemed to be a plush toy of Porky Pete. We were told at this launch there were representatives from both Facebook and Disney but I saw neither Mark Zuckerberg nor Mickey Mouse present in the crowd. From the gathered crowd we did hear from the guy from Mind Candy games promoting Zara’s effort while the lady who created the brilliant Singstar was more a fan of James’ creation. The worst advice came from the Sony Entertainment gentleman who liked both games and simply told Lord Sugar he had a tough decision on his hands.

In the boardroom we had the usual expositional chit-chat as Sugar heard from the returning candidate before sending them back to the various hair salons and guitar strap designing studios from which they came. Both finalists then came under criticism for the negative traits they have displayed during the process, Nick felt James was a bit of a wheeler-dealer while Karren believed that Zara sometimes lead from behind but both dealt with these comments quite well. Although Sugar told both of them that he would base his decision on what had happened over the past eight weeks to me I think he only decided on the winner when he heard what each person would do with the money. While James, who admitted to never having had a job, wanted some of the money to fund his continued study of economics it seemed Zara had more of a plan to buy better film equipment so that she could continue being paid for making her movies. I think James’ eventual downfall was when he constantly described himself as a risk-taker as I don’t think it’s what a potential investor really wants to hear and so Zara was picked as the winner presumably because he felt she had a better idea of what she wanted to do with the money. I think part of his decision was also based on last year’s Junior Apprentice in so much as winner Arjun is still yet to utilise the majority of his investment while third place Zoe has since set a shop up with her sister.

So that’s it the Young Apprentice is over and hopefully will return again next year. However the ratings have been incredibly poor so I think the jury’s still out. For me this wasn’t as good as the first series of the Young Apprentice, as I felt that was a surprise hit while this felt a little bit more manufactured and some of the characters, especially Harry M and Mahamed, were picked for being big characters rather than for their business acumen. Regular readers of the column will know that I wanted either Harry H or James to win the contest but like Lord Sugar, in the end I concede that it seemed that Zara had a better plan for the money. I’d like to finish off by saying well done to all the candidates as I felt some of their ideas were very good indeed and I could never have done as well as they did when I was sixteen or seventeen.

Do you feel that the right person won? They are both called to County Hall where they are briefed on the competition’s toughest challenge yet. With the help of some familiar faces they must create and develop a brand new online video game as well as filming a viral advert to accompany their launch campaign.

It’s Game Over for one candidate as winner takes all in the final task.

JAMES AND ZARA GO HEAD TO HEAD IN TWO-PLAYER FINALE

As they approach the last hurdle the two remaining candidates are full of confidence and eager to prove themselves on the task. James comments: “I think that Zara is going to be a tough competitor because I think Lord Sugar likes her and she can speak very well but I’m looking forward to showing what I can do.” While Zara says confidently: “I came here to win this and I’m so close now I can literally taste it. I’m definitely not afraid that I can’t beat James it’s just a matter of pulling out all the stops now.”

But who will get top score in the gaming task?

MAHAMED SUGGESTS GRIM GRAVEYARD GAME AS FORMER CANDIDATES RETURN

With the former candidates returning to lend a helping hand it’s down to Lord Sugar to split the teams. Lewis, Harry H, Hayley, Lizzie and Hannah join James while Ben, Mahamed, Harry M, Gbemi and Haya lend their support to Zara, but will they be a hindrance or a help?

Over on Zara’s team, a brainstorm is in full swing when Mahamed chimes in with a rather dark game concept and suggests: “What about a boy who goes to a graveyard to visit his parents and zombies come out of everywhere?” A bemused Zara replies: “It seems a bit sombre for me, I want to do something fun.”

Meanwhile, James’ teammates are equally keen to offer ideas with Lizzie suggesting a spot the difference puzzle game where players must note missing items, but a cynical Hannah quips: “I think what’s missing is the fun.”

SLAPSTICK VS SATIRE AS BOTH TEAMS OPT FOR COMEDY VIRAL CAMPAIGNS

The two finalists eventually settle on video game ideas with Zara opting for ‘Piggy Panic’ a platform game where users must help Porky Pete escape from a butcher, while James goes with ‘Crazy Cabinet’ a time management challenge where the player assumes the role of prime minister. But there is still the tough task of creating a viral video to tie in with their game concept.

James decides on satirical humour and says: “I know these ideas may seem a little bit offensive but nothing is funny unless it offends someone.”

Meanwhile Haya voices her reservations about Zara’s decision to go for slapstick comedy and says: “I can’t see any adult laughing at this. A ten-year-old maybe.”

With all to play for and access to a fund worth £25,000 at stake, who will take the title of Young Apprentice 2011?

Monday 12th December at 9PM on BBC ONE

View the original post Young Apprentice final: Zara Brownless and James McCullagh go head to head tonight! *SPOILERS* on Unreality TV

The Young Apprentice Week Seven Review – James McCullagh and Zara Brownless in final

The Apprentice

James McCullagh

Young Apprentice

Zara Brownless

In the adult version of The Apprentice the penultimate week’s show is traditionally reserved for the interviews so that Sugar can whittle down his candidates to a final two. However while there would be a final two his Lordship revealed that the next task would see the entire losing team fired as well as a member of the winning team as both Atomic and Kinetic set about developing flavours and brands of popcorn. This news was delivered to them by Sugar himself as the candidates were relaxing playing some sort of weird ball game at their house he surprised them by entering through the back door as ominous backing music let us know that this was not expected. However surely the kids new something was awry as there was a camera filming their game, unless that is they’re being taped 24/7 and in that case it’s just a bit creepy. After this announcement Harry M and Zara both looked shocked not so much because of the impending quadruple firing but because they had to go to Leeds for the task and they hadn’t had their shots yet. Harry H and Lizzie also looked quite upset when they realised that they would be in a team with six-time loser Harry M and were at an instant disadvantage.

It didn’t help matters that Harry M was constantly trying to undermine his namesake every time he felt that his ideas weren’t listened to. A case in point was when deciding on a theme both Harry H and Lizzie thought a simple American theme would suffice with the brand name Empire State decided on. But this wasn’t good enough for Harry M who felt he had the best idea in the world with Smoochies a brand of popcorn designed for sharing when you go out on a date. He was taken with this from the early going after scribbling a very immature design however his teammates were less than confident and dismissed it. Despite that he kept banging on about it as the two Harrys visited an American Diner to decide on popcorn flavours he exclaimed, ‘I love Smoochies’ which garnered an exasperated look from Karren Brady who was sitting in the adjacent booth looking like someone who’d turned up for a blind date and had been stood up. Even after deciding on barbecue chicken and maple syrup pancakes, Harry M was still trying to get the Smoochies idea on and he almost convinced his project manager that he could fit in with the American theme thankfully Lizzie talked him back down to Earth and there was no more mention of Smoochies, until the boardroom at least.

Over on Team Kinetic a Mediterranean was decided on but a brand name was less forthcoming as Haya and James mulled over ideas while a stop to a deli gave them a chorizo sausage flavour as well as a cheese and olive one. I really enjoyed James’ idea of simply calling their product ‘Popcorn Popcorn’ which was reminiscent of last year’s winning idea a bottle of water called ‘A Bottle of Water’. When asking Zara for advice all of her names seemed to include the word fusion which is probably quite apt as she looks like she comes from a family who don’t eat a meal unless its infused with something or other. Their eventual name ‘La Popcorn’ wasn’t much better than James’ proposed idea and Nick Hewer was instantly dismissive saying that it meant The Popcorn but then as the host of Countdown I would expect him to be familiar with the etymology of words. The flavours arrived the next morning with Atomic liking both of their American offerings but James wasn’t impressed with either of his flavours and told his teammates that he wouldn’t eat either of them which is a bit worrying as James doesn’t look like a boy who’s turned down much food in his lifetime.

Kinetic decided to let ultra-enthusiastic Zara to lead all three of their pitches and first up was there budget airline Jet2.com and she let the adjectives fly, pardon the pun, calling the chorizo ‘much-loved’ and describing their product as the ultimate treat with the ultimate taste. However the woman from the airline was about as impressed with the flavours as James was and in the end they decided not to order any. In comparison Lizzie’s pitch was a lot lighter and full of humour appealing to the woman sitting on the panel when she mentioned that it wouldn’t ruin the waistline in the way that chocolate might and then the team were also able to deal with the issues about logistically fitting packs of popcorn on the on-board trolley. After this brilliant pitch the airline was a lot more enthused with this popcorn and ordered 50,000 units. Atomic’s pitch at the Odeon didn’t go very well which is surprising seeing as Harry H was delivering it and I have to say he was at his least confident here since the process began. Meanwhile Zara again went into one of her monologues but it was enough to secure her team 15,000 orders as compared to Atomic’s 10,000. It all came down to Morrisons who were given confident pitches from Harry M and once again Zara and ordered from both however with Kinetic getting 100,000 orders they won outright and all the two Harrys and Lizzie were sent packing.

In possibly the sweetest Apprentice boardroom ever Lord Sugar praised all the candidates on the losing team telling Harry M that he didn’t deserve to lose every task, telling Lizzie that he loved how forthright she was and echoing many of our sentiments telling Harry H that he excelled at everything and shouldn’t be going home as most of you who read this column know he was my favourite to win the whole thing. To compensate for the triple firing Lord Sugar handed out his personal business cards to the trio telling them to stay in touch as they left I almost saw a look on Karren Brady’s face that said, ‘you never gave me one of those!’ However the episode wasn’t over yet, which was good as there was still at least ten minutes to go, as Haya, James and Zara found out which two of them were going into the final. Zara and Haya were banging on about James’ dictatorial leadership style but both Zara and James agreed that Haya was possibly the person they could’ve done the task without. In the end it was Haya who was fired, and not given a card, but she did get a taxi ride speech which again was quite a reflective one saying how she’d experienced more in the past seven weeks than in her seventeen years. In another car, finalists James and Zara were heading back to the house as Zara remarked to James – I do like you James but I have to remember that you’re my competition now.

I have to say I was very shocked to see Harry H go in this fashion as I had him down as a finalist against one of the two people who did make it that far. Assessing both finalists I see James as a more all-rounder and once his edges are ironed out he could be a very good businessman meanwhile Zara seems a little bit high and mighty at some stages thinking only she can be the creative one on a team. If I had to put my neck on the line I would say that James is the more likely winner but after the shock exits this week I’m not sure anymore.
Who do you think will win Young Apprentice? This time the teams met in Madame Tussauds as the ten items were to help them with their weekly shop of things that need replacing, I found this was a rare moment in Apprentice history as the location in which Lord Sugar met the teams was actually relevant to the completion of the task. Some of the ten items were quite self-explanatory – 100 Helium Balloons, a Left-Handed Electric Guitar in mint condition, a stool, 40m of Red Carpet, a vanity case and a moustache comb the latter of which neither team seemed to find. Then there was the case of the Size 10 Red Stilettos apparently for Elle McPherson but I don’t think I’ve ever seen a picture of her in which she’s wearing shoes as gaudy as this. Meanwhile there was a suit for Justin Bieber that had specific measurements – a 34 inch chest, 28 inch waist and a 32 leg after some searching Lizzie’s team realised that a child’s outfitters would be the best place to go for this item. In the unlikely event Mr Bieber was watching this at the time I’m sure he’d be appalled by the suggestion that he still buys children’s sized clothes as he’s a proper adult now, honest.

There is always one item though that stumps both teams and in this instance it was a Dashiki. Now I know what you’re thinking head to Wikipedia and indeed that’s what I did and discovered that it was a colourful men’s garment often worn in West Africa. But these seven teenagers were not allowed the internet and as Lord Sugar rightly pointed out this was like cutting of their oxygen. On Atomic, Harry M had the idea to call a library and for them to check their database and had Zara do this however when the database came back with no results Zara had them check in dictionary and came back with the right answer. Meanwhile Kinetic spent most of the day searching down this item with project manager Haya instructing Harry H to do most of the footwork on his own while she and James struggled to even pronounce it. Harry H looked lost, confused and frustrated for the majority of this task as he went round a collection of befuddled market vendors who all had no idea what he was going on about. In the end, probably to get rid of him, one chap instructed him that it was an Arabic dress but Haya who herself is Arabic had never heard of it. Later Harry realised his mistake after consulting a woman from the Sudan and the Kinetic threesome came back Dashiki-less. But if both teams had been playing close attention there was a visual clue given to them, and us the audience, as we saw a close-up of Nelson Mandela who was wearing said clothing item. The best bit of the Dashiki quest was when Kinetic revealed that they had no idea what it was there was the smuggest look ever on Zara’s face, but more on her later.

As Karren Brady rightly pointed out this is not a treasure hunt but a negotiating task and teams not only get fines for not bringing items back but also for not getting discounts on those they do buy. Haya’s team set out to do just this by not hanging around sourcing items, like Lizzie’s Atomic did, instead relying on their project manager’s knowledge of the London boroughs. At first this wild goose chase seemed like a silly idea but the team got going when Harry H found a furniture clearance sale and managed to get a good deal on the stool. The search for the left-handed guitar took Haya and James to Tin Pot Alley where they astounded the old rockers who own the stores with their lack of classic musical knowledge for example Haya answered who when one of the salesmen told her that Jimi Hendrix used to use the same guitar. Eventually James got a great deal knocking eleven pounds off a £99 guitar and really doggedly fighting for the final pound discount. This duo also did very well finding the pocket watch and vanity case in the same store and having to pay only £70 for both from the most feminine looking man I have ever seen.

The same pocket watch caused the most problems for Lizzie’s team as she sent Zara and Hayley off as her sub-team believing that they had found the best deal on a pocket watch and not realising they had to trek all the way over to Croydon to get it. Arriving at a very elegant looking shop with a kindly looking lady this sub-team thought they’d got a good deal at £145 not knowing at this point that their rivals had paid more than £100 less. Hayley and Zara didn’t heed Lord Sugar’s advice that these products must look the part but not cost the Earth and again when buying the guitar they paid a lot more than Haya’s team did. Similarly Lizzie taking Harry M’s advice to search for the Bieber suit went to the upper-class St. James’ Street after her suggestion of a market stall was shot down by the posh boy who failed to believe that any market would sell suits. I have to say that I found that the ultimate problem with Team Atomic here was that they had no experience of how much things cost as at least three of them – Harry, Hayley and Zara seem to come from quite privileged backgrounds while Lizzie seems to look to them as experts of London retail knowledge. Lizzie herself made a fundamental error when she failed to even get a pound knocked off the Elle McPherson shoes thus landing her team with a massive fine possibly more so than if they hadn’t found the product.

In the boardroom it was obvious that Kinetic had won the task with a final total that was just over the amount that Atomic had paid for their items before the fines were lumped on. Before we get to the final showdown I have to say a quick word about this week’s treat which I have to say ranks up there with one of the weirdest. Sugar sent Haya, Harry M and James off to a photographer to get model-type shots but I don’t really think this was up the two lad’s alley very much and James looked very uncomfortable in his suit. Sugar promised that these photos would be Hollywood style but I respectfully disagree and overall conceding that they were a bit rubbish. Back to business and Lizzie decided to bring in Hayley and Zara to the final three which meant serial loser Harry M got let off yet again my theory is that project managers are scared to bring him back in since Hannah was fired for doing just that. It was during her time in the final three that Zara launched into one of the all-time best diatribes that I have ever seen on The Apprentice. She launched into a politician-like speech stating that she, ‘may be overly domineering at times and I will work on that but I would rather do more and do too much rather than do too little.’ I have to say that if they ever decide to make a prequel for the forthcoming Margaret Thatcher biopic The Iron Lady then Miss Brownless would have to be a contender to take the role. Despite both of her team-mates saying that she should be fired ultimately it was Hayley who got the chop after Karren Brady surmised that her elbows weren’t big enough for the process. To me Hayley seemed like the obvious choice and apart from winning the flower-arranging task she’s mainly hung around in the background and has been about as entertaining as one of those red stilettos.
So we’re down to the final six now and next week it will be a quadruple firing, the biggest in Apprentice history, so the big question is who will be in the final? For my money Harry H has performed the best throughout he has only lost twice and was only in the firing line once he has excelled at presentation, selling and haggling and has not been afraid to stand up for himself. It is harder to see who will be in there with him but I think it will either be James or Zara both of whom are larger than life characters who have demonstrated moments of genius and will give Harry a run for his money. However we will have to see who succeeds in next week’s popcorn task but for now we have all at least learnt what that colourful shirt Nelson Mandela wears is called, haven’t we?

Who do you think should be in the Young Apprentice final? The candidates must find and buy 10 items and bring them back by 7pm.

After Lord Sugar gives them some final advice, “Everything you come back with has to look the part but it musn’t cost the earth”, he mixes the teams up.

The team that spends the least money on all the items will win, and on the losing team one of them will be fired but which team will melt under pressure in the wax-work task?

HAYA’S HAPHAZARD STRATEGY

Whilst Lizzie is quickly picked to be Project Manager on Team Atomic, Harry H and Haya both want to be PM for Team Kinetic with Haya eventually taking the role due to her knowledge of London.

Both teams have very different strategies, with Lizzie’s team instantly hitting the phone to determine the location of items before deciding their destination.

Over on Haya’s team, her policy is to get out as quickly as possible to the places she knows in London, in the hopes that she will find the items there. After James’ disagrees with this idea, Haya shouts him down, “James you want you want you want but you don’t suggest anything!”

After observing Haya and James on Portobello Road, it becomes clear that Karren isn’t keen on Haya’s tactic either, “Haya’s strategy is to simply wander from shop to shop in the hope that they might have one of the items on the list. There’s no structure, there’s no strategy, it’s absolutely crazy!”

However Team Atomic’s planning skills may not be what they seem either, as Zara and Hayley set off all the way to Croydon to obtain a pocket watch.

BOTH TEAMS IN DASHIKI DISASTER

Many of the items turn out tricky to procure with a Justin Bieber sized suit causing Harry M huge hassle after he discovers that the stores he frequents in areas like Saville Row, don’t stock what he’s after and don’t offer the type of price Lord Sugar was after either.

However the hardest item to find proves to be a dashiki for Nelson Mandela’s waxwork, with the teams having trouble pronouncing it let alone discovering what it actually is. On Team Atomic, Harry M’s first plan to call Harrods is hardly a success, before he comes up with the idea of calling a library to search their catalogue for the word. With one team being told a dashiki is a West African shirt, and the other an Arabian style dress, it is clear that one of the teams is barking up the wrong tree.

NEGATIVE NEGOTIATIONS

Both teams know the task is all about negotiating, but each find it hard to get the type of deals they know that Lord Sugar demands.

On Team Kinetic, Haya and James make some good deals using their charm offensive, knowing that every pound counts in this competition, however a deal that Harry H makes for 100 helium filled balloons makes Haya see red. Feeling defensive and confused as to what he should be buying, Harry H complains, “I’m doing the best I can but when you keep on changing your mind every second it doesn’t help.”

Over on Team Atomic, as the shops begin to close, the team becomes more and more panicked, with Harry M and Lizzie failing to negotiate at all on one item. An observant Nick senses trouble in the boardroom as a result of this, “They paid full price, not a penny off. Lord Sugar will have a word with them tomorrow, the penalty? I’m not sure. That’s down to him ”

After delivering the items back to Madame Tussauds, the two anxious teams can only wait to discover their fate, knowing that they both face a £50 fine plus the guide price for every item that they missed.

Which team has done famously and who will end up looking like dummy?

Tune in to find out who will be next to hear Lord Sugar’s dreaded words: “You’re Fired!”

View the original post Tonight’s Young Apprentice: The Pressure is on for Harry Maxwell and Haya Al Dlame (PICTURES) on Unreality TV

Young Apprentice Week Five Review: Proper Deodorant Use

The Apprentice

James McCullagh

Young Apprentice

I’m always a fan of the opening stages of The Apprentice where one of the candidates picks up the phone from the mysterious secretary from Lord Sugar’s office which informs them they have a very small amount of time to look smart and get to the agreed upon location. This call then results in everybody getting ready furiously – applying eye-liner, straightening hair and in the case of James spraying deodorant all over his shirt after he’s fully dressed. You would think that everybody in that house would know approximately what time they had to be up and therefore be ready to go, but every week there seems to be that hurry to get ready, anyway I digress. I mention James’ weird morning ritual because it ties in nicely with this week’s task for each team to create their own anti perspirant spray. As it seems these days Lord Sugar is too lazy to leave the confines of the boardroom he delivered this message on a big screen at Wembley Stadium with Nick and Karren standing awkwardly in the stadium before delivering the team names and the project managers.

After four weeks of being part of the losing team smirking upper-class twit Harry M was finally chosen as team-leader of Kinetic while the older-than-her-years Zara was put in charge of Atomic. Essentially Harry was a nightmare to work with from day one he ignored everybody’s ideas and essentially told James that he was being unprofessional every time he tried to go for a unique idea. Upon this initial meeting with Harry, Gbemi and Lizzie basically had a look on their faces that said ‘we’re going to lose this task aren’t we?’ I think it was this hatred of Harry’s leadership style that compelled Gbemi to go against the wishes of her project manager, who wanted a bright pink design on the bottle so it would stand out on the shelf, instead designing quite a dark background with pink writing and James’ odd idea of having a vanity mirror in the design.

On the other team amateur film-maker Zara was keen to get started storyboarding the advert but she really should’ve waited as Harry H and Haya had gone to a focus group who basically hated their idea of a spray that you could use all day and all night. Going back to the drawing board they simply decided to cast one street dancer who would show the freedom that their product, named RAW, would give you. Not very confident with the idea Zara had decided to go to the casting session, surely a little bit risky seeing as the last time she was involved in a casting they came back with black mother and white baby. Eventually street-dancer Ryan was chosen to be the centre of their campaign and enthusiastic Zara set about trying to make this the most artistic commercial ever. In her profile Zara claims one of her biggest inspirations is director Katherine Bigelow but this wasn’t the bleeding Hurt Locker just an advert to stop teenagers smelling of B.O., something somebody really should’ve told Zara early on. I did feel a little sorry for Hayley, who Sugar had told to be more assertive last week, even in the one instance where she tried to stand up for what she believed in she was shouted down by Zara with the reason that she knew a lot more about film-making than Hayley ever will. As for a lot of time the action was focused on the making of this ad I felt that Zara’s team may fall into the classic Apprentice pitfall of not highlighting the product in their campaign. I did feel sorry for Ryan though who was put through his paces by this mini-director and at one point I thought he was going to call his agent and quit the thing all together.

Still having Zara in their team was an instant advantage for Atomic she knew about putting a storyboard together and the right angles to shoot from. Despite being given a blank storyboard to draw their ideas on Kinetic ignored this so when Harry M and James went to shoot their ad they had no idea what they were doing. I think their ad was doomed from the get-go when they decided to shoot in a dingy looking basement club and go for ‘humour’ rather than their initial idea of confidence. Their concept, which involved a geeky girl spraying herself with their Vanity deodorant and suddenly becoming cool, looked like a scene from a 1985 John Hughes coming-of-age film. The finished commercial didn’t look much better with the schoolgirl like costume and the dodgy dancing combined with the dark club setting made this look like one of those late night ads for chat lines you can ring and meet new ‘friends’ in your local area.

The big news that has been announced since the last Apprentice episode aired is that Nick Hewer has been given the role as the new Countdown host and I think because of this there was a lot more of his acerbic asides. Early on he feared that Atomic’s packaging looked like something as ancient as him but that the team were young and new the trends and he finished this by saying let’s see if they’re right and I’m wrong possibly a catchphrase he could use on a new quiz show. Other comments included describing the club as dark and smelly, holding up Atomic’s blank storyboard and even referencing the Coen Brothers at one point! As well as being sarcastic Nick proved he could be positive as well praising Lizzie’s pitch with an extremely back-handed compliment saying, ‘it was a lot better than I thought it would be.’ Of course Atomic ended up in the boardroom with the usual shouting match taking place between Harry and James. However it was Gbemi’s design decision that saw her fired and personally I felt this was the wrong decision. Sugar claimed that he’d kept Harry in because of his past record of excellent sales however I feel that it was more to do with his clashes with other team members and how this makes brilliant T.V.

I always do like The Apprentice episode with the advert production and this one didn’t let me down. James and Harry’s club-based advert was very dated and extremely hilarious but perhaps not in the way that they’d envisaged. I know I’m saying this every week but Harry H impressed me once again with his incredibly confident pitch and introduction of their team’s advert. He also seemed really excited when he got to fly a plane during the weekly treat in a segment that I felt was afforded a lot more time than these treat scenes normally are. I feel that Harry’s main competition will probably be from James and after this week maybe Lizzie as well. But even if he hasn’t made into the final I hope after this task James has at least learnt how to use a deodorant can in the right manner.

View the original post Young Apprentice Week Five Review: Proper Deodorant Use on Unreality TV

Young Apprentice Results: Harry Maxwell narrowly avoids chop as Gbemi Okunlola is fired!

The Apprentice

Gbemi Okunlola

Harry Maxwell

Young Apprentice

On tonight’s Young Apprentice it was back to the boardroom after a heated task designing and pitching antiperspirants and for one candidate it was the end of the road. With his team challenging his performance PM Harry M fumed:

“This is all getting a bit pathetic and a bit erratic. I’m not going to stoop to that level. I’m going to keep my integrity in tact so just save it!”

Back in the boardroom Harry M quickly delivered his defense and claims: “This team were quite a hard team to manage but they gelled together under my leadership… James you tried to cause trouble every step of the way.”

Harry M decided to bring back Gbemi for her poor product design and James for his disruptions but back in the boardroom an onslaught against the PM continued.

Gbemi commented: “You didn’t listen to anyone else in the team! It is not all about you Harry M it is about the people in the team as well.”

But Lord Sugar’s mind was made up and he delivered his final verdict, saying:

“Harry this is the fifth time you have been in the losing team, there’s got to be a reason. James you came into this process like a bull in a china shop but you have improved. Gbemi, you’re a designer and it is in my opinion the main culprit in the failure of this task. Because of that serious design error, Gbemi – You’re Fired!”

As she was driven away Gbemi said: “This definitely isn’t going to put me off the designing that I do. With every mistake I make I learn to make it 100 times better.”

View the original post Young Apprentice Results: Harry Maxwell narrowly avoids chop as Gbemi Okunlola is fired! on Unreality TV
