The Voice 2012: Tyler James brings an emotional edge to ‘Higher Love’ (VIDEO)

The Voice mentor commented in a recent interview that he doesn’t know why Tyler James even entered the BBC series, when his music career was going so well for him outside of the show, so the pressure was on for the handsome singer to perform well on the first live round this evening.

The 30 year old singer from London hit the headlines this week, when he revealed that he had to have plastic surgery a few years back, after he was attacked by a gang of ten men. Of course he is also probably best known because of his connection with the late singer Amy Winehouse.

However tonight’s show was supposed to be all about his performance and not his face, or his love life and for his first live performance of the series Tyler gave a rendition of ‘Higher Love’ by Steve Winwood.

He admitted beforehand that he wanted to do a slow and emotional rendition of the hit eighties track and make it totally different to the original and seemed excited by his ideas.

By different, Tyler meant higher and he sang the first verse right up in his falsetto. He looked every inch the popstar, in his black tight fitting shirt, trousers and skinny red tie.

The vocals were actually a lot better than we were expecting and the whole thing had a bit of a Prince vibe at one point, which was quite enjoyable. It was one of our favourite performances of the night, because not only did James sing well, but he totally changed up his track.

DANNY O DONOGHUE: I could literally go and download that song now! There are people who are singers and some who are artists and you are an artist!

WILL.I.AM: When you were singing, I imagined that we were on tour together and then after we performed we went to the dressing room and all the girls passed by me and went to you. You are dope, everything you did was super mega fresh. You found the emotion, I felt it, every lick was licked.

TOM JONES: If I had been his coach on this show, i would have done exactly the same because the song choice was perfect. I have never heard anyone sing as strong with a falsetto voice as a full voice.

JESSIE J: I loved the simplicity of it. You seemed so comfortable and it was a great song choice. That was amazing, so well done.

Did you enjoy Tyler’s performance tonight? Was it enough to win him a place in the next round? Leave your comments below.

it might be a steve winwood song but he was so channeling james vincent mcmorrows version of it. him saying he wants to do a slower, higher rendition of it to make it his own – its already been done! that said, i did think he was awesome.

  2. Leslie says:

…that was the most amazing performance I have seen in a long time. I want Tyler to win The Voice!!!

  3. Laurie says:

Total blatant copy of the James Vincent McMorrow’s version! I just hope it propels McMorrows version into the spotlight – especially as he recorded it for a charity album and all the proceeds going to Headstrong (a charity for youth mental health).

I think Tyler sung that song better than the original, I was very emotional, loved it

i love Tyler James. He’s very artistic and full of charm. he sang that song romantically. there are so many great singers on the show. he doesn’t have the best vocal but he has his own style. that’s more important than anything else. i would like to see him win

    Best performance of the night.
