The Voice 2013: Annie Lennox or Lulu to join the panel?
BBC bosses are reportedly considering asking Annie Lennox or Lulu to join the panel of The Voice for next year’s series.
All four coaches from 2012 – Tom Jones, Jessie J, Will.i.am and Danny O’Donoghue – have revealed that they would like to return to the talent show for it’s second run, but insiders say that with ratings taking such a large dip during the recent live shows, they are looking for a way to revamp the format and a new face could be just the thing they need.
Beeb executives and Universal chiefs are reportedly brainstorming about ways to save the £25 million series and are considering replacing one of the panel with legendary performer Lennox, or Scottish belter Lulu.
After Tom Jones won with Leanne Mitchell last Saturday night, insiders say bosses are worried that Jessie J and Danny O’Donoghue are too young and inexperienced to mentor hopefuls.
It may be a tough job trying to convince Annie to take part though, as she has been one of the few stars to openly refuse to work with Simon Cowell or on any sort of talent show to date.
In a recent interview with Absolute Radio, the former Eurythmics singer said:
‘You wouldn’t find a Joni Mitchell on X Factor, that’s not the place. X Factor is a specific thing for people that want to go through that process, it’s a factory, you know, and it’s owned and stitched-up by puppet masters.’
We wonder if she feels as strongly about all talent shows?
However it is believed that Lulu could be a real possibility, as she was previously in talks with controller Danny Cohen about joining the show, but was passed over in favour of Jessie J.
However, while they hoped that the ‘Domino’ hitmaker would bring in young viewers, in the end it was claimed that Jess caused more trouble than she was worth, with her diva like behaviour and in the end, her last singer Vince Kidd finished in the bottom place in the final.
An insider told Dan Wootton at The Daily Mail:
‘Various people are going to be sounded out for the judging panel because the line-up of coaches is the only area where Danny can really shake up the show.
‘Any changes to the format are out of the hands of the BBC. Lulu now seems likely after the success of Tom Jones. The thinking is that she would be interested in taking part.
‘Annie Lennox would be a real coup, but much harder to secure. Her professional relationship with Universal could help.’
Lulu has some judging experience too, as she appeared in the BBC’s reality TV show Just the Two of Us in 2006 as a judge, alongside Trevor Nelson, CeCe Sammy and Stewart Copeland.
