Fans of The Voice will know that last year’s winner Leanne Mitchell has had a less than auspicious start to her career in music since she left the show victorious last year…
And just recently, we reported that an insider at the BBC had claimed that Leanne’s career had failed to take off because she “didn’t work as hard” as fellow 2012 finalists Bo Bruce and Tyler James, and even blamed Leanne for affecting the show’s viewer ratings last year, branding her a “poor advertisement” for the singing contest.
And though those remarks were without doubt harsh, the evidence would tend to somewhat back them up as it’s been reported today that Leanne is making a modest living by performing at birthday parties and other low-key gigs.
Speaking to The Sun, Leanne – who was on Team Tom last year – said, “I’ve done a couple of birthday parties since The Voice.
“I’ve no big performances planned at present.”
And of her new album, which is due out in May, Leanne remarked, “I wanted to get it right. I hope people give it a chance.”
It’s all a far cry from the promise of wealth and fame that came with Leanne’s win on The Voice last year, of which the Daily Mail reported in June, “The 28-year-old bookies’ outsider beat Bo Bruce, Tyler James and Vince Kidd in the public vote on Saturday, winning a recording contract with Universal Music thought to be worth £500,000.
“Insiders said she could net up to £1million from record sales and promotional deals within a year.”
Well that clearly didn’t happen, though during an interview with the paper, Leanne had said, “I never came into this to be famous.
“I won’t be spilling out of nightclubs. I want to concentrate on my music.”
And of the possibility that she might one day return to her working life pre-The Voice, Leanne said, “When I went into this competition, they left everything open for me. So I guess it’s a fall back option if it doesn’t work out.”
Why do you think Leanne hasn’t been the big hit she could or should have been?
For now, here’s a reminder of her on the show…
