Beverley Knight worries about young X Factor contestants

Beverley Knight has admitted that she worries about The X Factor’s younger contestants.

Speaking on Live From Studio Five, Knight explained: “Any of the bits I’ve watched have been on a catch-up thing. I’m never home to watch the show properly.”

She continued: “The thing that worries me about these shows is you have kids who literally go from serving over the counter to arenas. Everybody knows them. How on earth do you cope? How do you prepare for the adulation and the fame? How do you actually prepare for making music?

“You’re not prepared at all. You’ve got to build. What happens is, you get a lot of kids who kind of model themselves around one or two singers and they’ve got that down, but they don’t know their own voice, and that only comes through the little gigs and the building up. It’s a quick ascent, but to stay there – that’s the thing.”

    So very true.

I actually think all wanabes should get themselves used to singing in front of small intimate audiences. Restaurants, specialised clubs, pubs and social clubs.Open mike nights can be found and buskers nights can be found in most cities and for song writers checking out the local arts scene is a must.

The problem with the X factor is as much an attraction as a problem, is that it encourages everyone to apply – talented, misguided, and the talentless. The carrot is a million pound contract. For those who have the experience of smaller audiences the added attraction is all that free marketing which they could never afford themselves.

There are also problems though with the carrot and that is they only get to see a million pounds if the winning CD album and single sells 15 fold.
In reality the deal is worth a total of a million pounds and the real carrot also dependent on successful CD sales is anything from 32k.
