Fearne Cotton: ‘Rage Against The Machine fans don’t hate Joe McElderry’
Radio One DJ Fearne Cotton has denied Simon Cowell’s claims that Rage Against The Machine fans are bullying Joe McElderry.
The band have been backed by a huge Facebook campaign in a bid to help push their single ‘Killing In The Name Of’ to the number one spot, therefore beating Joe McElderry’s ‘The Climb.’
Talking about the campaign in a recent interview Simon said:
“If you take me out of the equation, you have a teenager with his first single being attacked by a huge hate mob on Facebook. It almost feels like a little kid being bullied. It feels like a spiteful campaign aimed at an 18-year-old who won a talent competition.
“It’s David versus Goliath and it’s not fair on Joe. It’s getting out of hand.”
However, Fearne Cotton wholeheartedly disagrees and she told The Mirror: “Simon’s been saying he thinks there’s some hate mob against X Factor, but I don’t think this is the case at all. It’s more a case of genuine rock fans versus genuine teenybopper fans.”
The Radio 1 presenter continued: “Simon needs to realise nobody’s against the show – but I love rock music. Not everyone out there’s going to love the music X Factor produces. It gets dull when it’s a case of guaranteed number one.
“Joe’s a sweetheart and good on him giving it a good bash. Kids like it but it’s not for us old rockers.”

“Rage Against The Machine fans don’t hate Joe McElderry”
Yes we do. I hate everything that pretty boy idiot stands for, the fact that he calls himself an “artist” is hilarious.
I don’t hate him. It’s not his fault what he became (going as low as insulting RATM in the national “paper” – The Sun)
Oh Fearne Cotton. You’re not an old rocker love, stop trying to be remotely credible.
A lot of people did not buy the single because they are rock fans but to get back at Simon Cowell/X factor. Fearne Cotton you talk a lot of rubbish, nothing to do with the fact that Simon previously upset you I expect.
This was a hateful campaign-and def. NOT in the Christmas spirit. The two that started it are parents so God help their kids- they chose a song full of swearing to represent Christmas!-great example for kids right!!Perhaps social services should be keeping an eye on those two!!
Well, that’s a stupid stab at their parenting skills. -.-”
But who’s to say that RATM would’nt have won even if there wasn’t this facebook group?! No matter what, people made the concious idea to buy the RATM single and not Joe’s. It was fair. A Joe facebook group wouldn’t have made any difference, really. No one was forced into anything.
maybe you’re ok with those parents choosing a lovely christmassy song full of expletives for all kids to enjoy!!!!!! But there are those of us who aren’t.! as for RATM getting to N0.1 without the facebook campaign-don’t be delusional! I and everyone i have spoken to (and i suspect the majority of the country) had NEVER heard of them so yeah it was likely everyone would’ve bought a nothing song by a “who are they?” band off their own bat!!
You can’t judge people by what they listen to, it’s barbaric! And just pitiful that you would suggest getting Social Services involved knowing what real problems out there are like! -.-
Whether you decide if it’s bullying or not, it’s what the nation decided. I don’t hate Joe, but I still think it’s rather fair. It’s a democracy. Deal with it.
My point was that the RATM song was full of swearing-do YOU think that’s a good song for kids to listen to. They could have chosen any other song to make their point but they didn’t-THAT says a lot about them!! So they WILL be judged on it. I think they are irresponsible parents as they didn’t care that kids would want to listen to the N0 1 chritmas record!!parents like them piss me off!
Do you think they’re playing it to their kids as a lullaby? You don’t know that! Parents that annoy you should be ones who actually don’t take care of their kids.
I’m talking about ALL kids. We ALL know (including those 2) that most young kids all over the country are more interested in the charts and the Christmas N0 1 record (as i was when young) than most adults, so they showed NO consideration for kids anywhere by choosing the RATM song. Can kids put on that record and play it for themselves or their friends? NO. can they be given that song as a present? NO. The christmas N0 1 should NOT be an exclusive record for over 18s!!! yes there are worse parents out there-but they are certainly selfish and irresponsible.
i for one am sad that joe didn’t make it, have people lost their minds.. giving a number 1 to some stupid old rock band that dont even make good songs, just sounds like a load of noise to me! urgh!
I’m sorry but it’s nothing to do with RATM fans hating Joe. If you listened to the lyrics of the song it’s underlying message is about how society is corrupt and many people feel strongly about this. I personally think Joe is a ‘nice’ lad with a ‘nic’e voice, but he’s just a bit too ‘nice’. I didn’t know about RATM untill this chart battle but I like them and what they stand for. And lets leave “God” out of it “Avenger”.
I dont hate Joe but the x factor winners being christmas no1 all the time is really boring and it’s time real music beat fake music

What ever fern you a silly billy arnt you if you think that , I love you though will you ever consider getting with me !!
Exactly! If people didn’t have a problem with Alexandra last year, clearly it’s not anti X Factor but people must just dislike Joe or his voice. Or at the least the majority of people.
I heard that a previous, unsuccessful attempt was made. But there’s also the fact that the longer this X-factor monopoly of the Christmas number 1 has gone on, the more fed up people have become and that would eventually show as it has indeed done now. It was planned well before anyone knew who was going to win X-factor. Any of them could have won and this campaign would still have run.
I think all of you Joe and X-factor supporters better get your facts straight before you start throwing around your prejudiced views which do not correlate to truth. It only makes you seem bitter…
I for one, a long time RATM supporter, hope Joe does well in the future, and hopefully in an original way. In fact, he may indeed become number one from next week on…and I hope he has at least half of RATMs success, which would indeed make him far more successful than any other X-factor winner so far. That is indeed big shoes to step in however as RATM has had a career spanning almost 20 years and are by no means, a one hit wonder. They’re a force to be reckoned with, not just within the musical sphere. I’ve been an avid supporter for all these years and I’m far from alone in this. Will Joe have this kind of support? It has yet to be proven…
Of course, nothing stops some people who hate X-factor and all that is connected with it, to also support this campaign, but the original creators of this movement have made their intentions clear and since even Simon Cowell has congratulated them, without any signs of hate in either direction, I think we should let such accusations lie. Besides, I’ve seen enough hateful comments from a lot of Joe supporters on here.
Fearne, bless her cotton socks, is right though, this was never aimed at Joe! Mostly it’s about people being tired of the predictability of the Christmas number 1 which, through this hijacking by the ’short term money making machine’ that is X-factor, has created a monopoly which has a negative effect on music, at least if we are speaking of original, creative and innovative efforts. Karaoke based recipe singing which is deliberately targeting the charts in this way should never crowd out original music.
So what you’re saying is because most of the country didn’t rush out and buy Joe’s single within a period of 4 days just to stop a moronic mean-spirited campaign that means they hate Joe’s voice!!!!!!! Great Logic! I didn’t buy his single either but i think he has a good voice and if he sings good songs should do well in the future!
I put my reply in the wrong place before- it was meant for Summer: So what you’re saying is that because most of the country didn’t rush out and buy Joe’s single within a period of 4 days just to stop a moronic mean-spirited campaign that means they hate Joe’s voice!!!! great logic! I didn’t buy his single either but i think he has a good voice and if he sings good songs should do well in the future!
I love X Factor, so I am just one opinion when I say that if I had bought any of the singles, it would not have been Joe’s, simply because it doesn’t appeal to me. And neither has Joe throughout this year’s X Factor. I don’t think Joe is as loved as everyone thought if the number one is anything to go by, because only a few people I know are Pro-Joe’s.
He SHOULD do well in the future. I don’t want him to do BADLY. I just don’t think right now he is doing so good.
