Joe McElderry ‘I’m disappointed but don’t take it personally

Joe McElderry has been his usual gracious self tonight as he commented on Rage Against the Machine winning Christmas number one.

Speaking on Radio One’s The Switch tonight Joe admitted that he was disappointed that his single only made it to number two, but went on to congratulate Rage on their win.

The 18 year old said:

“I am disappointed and it would have been the icing on the cake. But I still can’t believe its number 2 and I can’t believe I have a single out. Can I just say well done to Rage Against The Machine, they’ve done well.

He joked: “I’d never heard about them before this week, but I’ve heard about nothing since.”

On how he felt about the huge internet campaign propelling RATM towards the top chart spot Joe said:

“I haven’t took it personally because its more against the show than me. I think it would have happened to anyone who won as the campaign started before the show even ended.”

Joe also admitted that he had enjoyed the chart battle, particularly how excited everyone was about tonight’s result. He said:

“It has been an interesting chart battle. Literally nobody knew beforehand who would win and it was a real chart flight.

Everybody was checking to see who was behind and who was in front all week.”
