Katrina Lee: Simon Cowell nearly wrecked my life

A Belfast woman who has undergone drastic cosmetic surgery for her big X Factor comeback, has revealed that Simon Cowell’s comments during her first audition almost wrecked her life.

Katrina Lee, underwent liposuction and facial cosmetic surgery after Simon told her that she had a good voice, but not the right look.

Lee told The Sun: “I had to go back and re-write history. What happened to me the last time nearly tipped me over the edge. It was terrible.

“I came face-to-face with Simon Cowell and told him that his comments had nearly wrecked my life. He told me, ‘That’s not a nice thing that I said’. He seemed really shocked about how his comments had affected me.”

Katrina also revealed that she battled with an eating disorder between her first and second audition for the X Factor.

She commented: “Even though it was Simon who knocked me down, he’s also the one who brought me back up again by telling me I was a good-looking girl when I returned this year. He took all my insecurity away.”

Well done Mr Cowell. What with your power to break and subsequently rebuild people, maybe you have chosen the wrong career path! Or maybe, just maybe, Katrina should find some self confidence and like herself for who she is and not for what people like Simon see in her.

This is the danger with reality type talent shows. Pyschologically they can affect young people who are already pressurised by the medias view of what you should look like.

I actually do think that it is time reality tv shows started to recognise true talent rather than concentrate on what you look like.

I also think another danger exists here that to many auditions are conducted prior to individuals reaching the actual judging stage. This means a kind of trial by ritual and informal audition takes place several times before the judging stage which renders sensitive people more nervous and stressful about having to perform.

I also think that whilst singing to a large audience is fantastic it is only ok if you have accustomed yourself to this through years of practice in your regions. Some professional artists today will still tell you that it is testing and nerve racking to do this, but once they are over the initial shock and begin their routines, they can give an excellent meaningful performance. The problem is this might not be the case for wanabe’s with no experience of singing or performance at all.

The common sense approach to auditions is that they need to be personal and professional.

The comparison here is BGT. The Britains Got Talent auditions work because the majority of people entering the competition are already performing in their regions. It is dubious whether the new X factor auditions work, it is possible that maybe they just need time, who knows – I’m a regional singer that has sung for 40 years.
