Question: Who’s version of A Moment Like This is better? Kelly Clarkson’s version from American Idol or Leona Lewis’ X Factor finale?
To help you along, I’m going to let you compare them side-by-side. Check out Kelly’s original (which I’d never seen before):
And you’ve probably all seen Leona Lewis’ version of the song by now:
Kelly Clarkson’s is a much more straightforward delivery, and her singing style is more rock-oriented. Leona’s on the other hand is much more tender and has a more powerful conclusion.
To be honest, I can’t call it. Who do you think is best?

A better comparison can be made of the Live performances.
Leona had be accused of lacking stage presence but watching Kellys, well she just stood there and the only muscles that moved was in her mouth.
Leona on the other hand bought the house down with a power house rendition and she worked the stage.
It made an utter mockery of those saying AI had better performers, Kelly was supposed to be their best ever.
I actually think Shayne Ward and Brenda of last season would have won on AI as well.

Both singers are different and they will seem better to their own followers. I think vocally Leona is better, but that doesn’t mean her rendition of their last song is better than the other, its is just different.

I think that Kelly Clarkson takes it all for vocal power and scenic presence, although AMLT is not my favourite song. She literally sends shivers down my spine when she sings. And I’m “super partes”(latin): I’m from Italy, so I’m neutral. Somehow, I gladly and democratically respect other opinions.

Kelly clarkson is in a whole different league to leona her version was miles better her voice has more depth and she entertains the crown on stage.
In my opinion Kelly is the best star to come out of these types of shows, and Leona is the bets the Uk has to offer. But when you’re talking voices, US will always win hands down!

Albsolute rubbish - The reason “better” singers come out of the US is because the US is huge and therefore there is a lot more hype created for their stars which leads to success in other countries such as Britain. The UK is much smaller - It cannot create the same hype as the Americans and thats why its so difficult for them to break America. Take Justin Timberlake for example, his songs are good but vocally he isnt superior to all British artists. Give Leona a chance, she has never experienced this before - so people should stop comparing Leona with kellys later work. I agree with someone who posted about Brenda - AI would have loved her!

So KELLY CLARKSON is in a different league maybe she should take up cheerleading for her favourite American football team. Then at least she could be said to represent a league. If depth of voice means croaking than we should invite the pondlife onto stage to sing.
The best singer to come out of an American reality TV show is the coloured guy who sang like Barry White other than that everybody and I mean everybody has been less then mediocre. But the curious thing about Americans is the denial of mediocrity they all think that they are best, they think they are the greatest, they think because they are the loudest they are better than everyone else. When this mentality of the bigger is better is smashed they might finally turn out a few decent singers.
You only have to watch 15 minutes of diabolical auditions from the American programmes to realise how they think.
The best singers who appear to be out of America have all originated elsewhere, but will carry the tag of being American
On the subject of LEONA the girl does have her weaknesses and these in time should iron out, believe me I know. They have to. Unless some cons of vocal coaches start ruining her vocal chances with pushing her to hard to young, with the all American big is better type belt sound 100% of the time. I have 37 years of classical singing behind me to know this.
There is no comparison between the two singers except one LEONA really can sing and will one day be very similar to her hero, Whitney Houston.

Leona has the best voice by far!!! Kelly also has a very strong and powerful voice to but Leona has true star quality. She is the best solo artist to come out of these reality singing shows and i believe one day she will be bigger than Whitney and Mariah! GO LEONAAAA!

I have been studying both singers and Leona has the edge when it comes to understanding music and more to the point she has an incredible voice box to deliver unbelievable notes. Kelly is good but Leona is better in many respects.
Ultimately, it is a matter of taste and a true comparison can almost never be made.

I prefer Kelly Clarksons voice, Leona tends to shout and has a hard quality to it at times. Leona may have the better range. She is also reported to be great live -as per fan statements on the Internet.
I hope Leona releases some new singles soon which are her sound. She doesn’t need to be Mariah or Whitney just her-self.
They say the beatles didn’t make it until they went to the US, then came back……

i think that leonas is well better coz leona can actually sing and although kelly clarksons good she is nowhere near as good as leona, also leona has beaten many world records making her the better liked singer and leonas song is more entertaining as she has more power and the song has a certain likability factor and the video actually has footage of her singing, and some of fellow scouser RAY!!! well my answer is leonas! Leona storms in front of kelly .kelly is just like the rest leona has something about her a spark that just makes her absoloutly fantasticso amazing i have tickets to go see her in concert.leona is soo amazing shes a person that keeps me going in the things i love I.E singing and dancing.when leona won i cried and now everytime i hear her voice a tear comes to my eyes and i go cold .thats how amazing leona is to get someone to go like that

I dont think there is anything special about Leona - yes is a good singer but thats about it. There are load of copycats trying to sing those songs now and in that style and quite frankly its getting boring, FIND SOMETHING NEW thats what I say!!
Besides, the show was fixed, they knew who they wanted to win from the beginning like ive said before.

I think its close but for performing I rate KELLY much higher than Leona, vocally they are evenly matched ,sometimes Leona slightly better but on the last single, kelly sang it far better but its a dire song anyway. Rod.

Leona has an amazing voice…and shes already creating a buzz over here in the states
Its hard to say whos better, they have different styles. Leona is up there with Mariah and Whitney (who I may add are both american), while kelly has more of an edge. I don’t think kelly is trying to be compared to whitney or mariah because she has a little bit of a rock vibe,which makes her appeal to a wider audience,and her voice is amazing…but in a different way.
I do predict however that leonas voice will also attract a wide audience because it doesn’t matter what music you listen to (country, rap, r&b, classical, rock, pop etc…)you can’t ignore her magnificent voice. With that being said I think given the right publicity moves, she’ll do great over here, and if what I read is true (she is rumored to be appearing on Leno and Ellen) shes off to a great start. Add an interview and preformance on the Today Show (in Rockefeller plaza in nyc) and everyone in America will know who she is and instantly fall in love with her.

I don’t think it matters who is better of Kelly and Leona, if there is a niche for both of them. There are lots of good singers and stars with different styles. There are lots of fans to support them all…..
I liked Leona’s “Somewhere Over The Rainbow”.I think it was her best song. She sang that nicely without belting it out. But thats my preference and opinion. I am not everyman just one of the many…
What happens now depends on the song writers, the music makers and Leona….
I saw a program about ABBA and the the members years of singing before they were famous as ABBA. They sung in different ways before as a group they came together and developed the ABBA sound. The program also showed how they added and mixed they music to enhance the effect of the vocal performance and to make the ABBA sound.
Leona now has her big breaks, so there is all to play for…..

Ive been to all the x factor shows and the wide view I pick up from them is that LEONA is a great singer with a great voice, and I agree with that totally BUT the vast majority are finding her very boring to watch.Many acts, like ETON ROAD, BEN, RAY and even the MacDonalds seem to be preferred as entertainment.Leona hasnt improved any since NEWCASTLE.Not a good closing act and a good few leave before she’s finished.Rod.

i like kelly’s version of the song better because its more origional sounding whereas leonas has been smoothed out by technology too much. Its a flat performance. Leona’s ability far exceeds the bland single that was released. So Kelly’s was better in my opinion! But i love Leonas voice and i’m sure she’ll release her next single and it’ll be fantastic and be better than anything Kelly has done so far. (But they have different styles of singing and voices so a comparision of voices can’t be fairly made.)

I think that we should really compare singers just because Leona has a smoother,sweet voice and Kelly has a strong,edgy voice. I don’t think vocal range is the absolute most important thing. So Leona can sing higher, who cares. But the only thing that bugs me is when i hear Leona sing, it seems that she’s trying to be like Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey combined. I mean this by saying she tries to have the strong voice of Whitney and the vocal range of Mariah. That’s basically it. Kelly doesn’t have that effect on me. She doesn’t remind me of anyone famous. She has that unique voice. Kelly can switch genre’s and sound good. She switched from r&b,pop,soul album to pop/rock album. Anyway when people think of the greatest singers they think of stuff that Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, and Celine Dion has. Leona has that but Kelly to me has that and that edgyness that none of them has. So to me they both are up there with Whitney,Mariah,and Celine but Kelly has that something else that none of them has. Like I said a million times she just has that edgyness thing and the rest don’t. But all in all they both are fantastic singers.

leona have a really good voice, no doubt about it. But so does all those singers in broadway.
Leona may change my mind, until she show some personality. Until she show me that she is unique. When you hear her, you instantly recognize her as LEONA, then ill be convinced. Right now she is nothing but a machine that can sing.

None of them! Fantasia is better than them both. I too have been to all the Factor live shows inc this years. Leona is no boubt a good singer, but so what - there is just nothing else there. There were much more enjoyable acts on the night, inc dare I say it The McDonalds. Dont get me wrong, I wont be buying their album but they certainly had me out of my seat! Lookin forward to Eton Rd’s though.

I prefer Kelly Clarkson’s version of the song. I think it’s all a matter of opinion though. I’m sure Leona could sing a Mariah Carey-esque song better than Kelly could, but this song doesn’t need whistle register-high vocal range, but a powerful voice on a person with great stage presence. Leona has better range, but her voice is not suited for this song. Moreover, her stage presence is lack-luster at best and we all know music isn’t about sheer vocal talent anymore–it’s also about your entertaining your fans and being a performer.

Kelly! Leona is really good. She has control unlike most singers. But saying she’s way better than all AI finalists is a joke! It is true that she is overrated, but she does sing better than most AI finalists. I am not American or am I British so i guess I could have a fair judgment of the two. Just my two cents…

i prefer leona as the overall singer…she is really powerful and i’ve watched her on x factor and seen her sing songs from the lieks of mariah and whitney and sound better than them so definitly leona all the way!

Actually the better one is Melinda Doolittle. When I heard one of her songs, she sent chills down my spine. I just had to stop everything I was doing and listen and what I was doing was important! Melinda has a magical quality to her voice.

In my humble opinion, Leonas without you is better and Kellys a moment like this is better. But its all a matter of taste. I would like to hear more of both of them. Both deserved to win the competition they did.
Leonas “Summertime” was excellent.
Hopefully with the backing they have both had both will continue producing songs

Two singers with completely different styles. Leona wins on her technical merits and singing range while Kelly wins on the emotion she puts into her singing and her power. They both have their pluses and minuses, for instance, Leona’s singing doesn’t really have any emotion to it, while Kelly could work more on the technical side. When it all boils out, I prefer music with emotion and power behind it, that is why I prefer Kelly’s version.

They are both great singers…but Leona is in a whole diffrent leauge! Her vocal range is mindblowing! Some people think leona can’t sing good low…but singing as low as she does at the begining of songs is really hard to do…Kelly can belt but she could never sing as low as Leona…and Leona has a bigger vocal range that Kelly! I like Kelly but love Leona!!!!

I much prefer Kelly Clarkson. Her voice has a lot more presence and depth. It’s like when she sings you feel every word. I remember watching Kelly win AI and I got chills when she sang this song.
Kelly’s voice is a lot more soulful and earthy.
Whereas with Leona, her voice is pretty but thats it. I watched her every week and after every performance you thought ‘yeah that was good but i didn’t feel anything’.

anyone who has any common sense KNOWS that Leona isn’t on Whitney Houston level. She isn’t even near Mariah. Leona isn’t even on Chirstina aguilera level. And kelly is a lot better. Their ranges are TECHNICALLY the same. And kelly has more power. I really can’t believe she is being compared to Whitney Houston. She is probably the most overrated artist in the world because of that.

Well here you go i’m neither a leona or a kelly clarkson fan I own Leona lewis’ album but not a single record by Kelly so I am not bias at all. Kelly clarkson is a much better singer than Leona it’s actually kelly who is in a differnet league to Leona and I agree with the previous post that anyone who compares LEONA to Whitney Celine or Mariah are out of their minds. As good as Leona is for a British talent she is many miles away from Whitney, Celine and Mariah. Whitney, Mariah and Celine are better than Chistina agueliera and Kelly clarkson who are both better than Leona. Jessica simpson and Beyonce are comparable to Leona and then there are many others who Leona is better than. Im sorry to burst your bubble but that is just the way it is.

Kelly has more versatility. She can really sing any genre and pull it off. I like both but kelly wins hands down. Kelly even recently made reba mcentire cry with her performance of up to the mountain. That performance is amazing. Reba then called her one of the greatest vocalists of all time. Plus kelly has much more emotion in her voice than leona.

Well I think Both are good, Leona has a better range of voice, but an artist is not just a good voice, a good artist needs to make you feel the song when he/she is singing it. So I prefer Kelly’s version. Its really deeper than leona!

kelly wins……leona is good too….but kelly is phenomenal way up there with celine,mariah etc

I think they both are up there with Whitney, Mariah, Celine, and Christina. They both have different things about them that are great. Personally though, I think Kelly edges out Leona on the basis of her ability to sing different genres and not using her powerhouse voice in every song and also because she puts her whole self in everything she sings. i.e. Her performances of Up to the Mountain. Leona is still a world class singer. They both are.

Interesting subject. I have heard both versions. I was wondering if Leona could be as good as Clarkson. So-I not only heard this song Leona did but also the songs she did on X-factor. She is an incredible singer. However—-after listening to about 6 or seven Leona songs the thought had occured to me if she could sing other genres of music as authentic as Clarkson. I have to say—no.
Clarkson has the unworldy ability to sing any style of music and sound authentic. Example–2 years ago she sang a duet with Rascal Flats. Man! she sounded like a country singer and sang country better than any country singer outh there including Underwood who I consider waayyyy overrated. Clarkson can hit very low as well as very high notes. Leona is a world class singer equal to or better than Whitney but Clarkson-she is from a different universe. The most versatile singer I have ever ever heard in my life.Be proud UK for Leona as the US is proud of Clarkson. These singers dont come around to often.

hello everyone… i can see that all of you give opinions based on who you think is the best singer and i think this is all about being fan of one of them and then saying that this or that one is the best becouse of this or that… fist of all we are just rating kellys and leonas version of this song… not saying whos the best singer, so if we want to get a conclusion lets please go to the right qwestion… what version is the best?… im not into any of them not kelly, not leona, but well here is my comment… almost every person here is saying something about leona having a higher range… and atleat in this song, thats definetly not true… there is no need to know a lot about music to notice about this,just listen to the pitch, listen to the piano and the notes, there is definetly a diference between them… note how kellys notes are higher even at the beginnig, then how can you say leona has a higher range, it is true that leona has a softer and smoother voice, definetly agree with that… but that doenst tell you anything about a singer since, if you want to have that type of voice, its not very difficult to pretend which i think leona does, it doesnt really sound natural to me to be honnest. but im still gonna have to say i like both of them, but there is my oppinion ok. bye

ohh something else all of that i said!… was all about this song only, dont confuse, its only about a moment like this. i know i said somenthing about the voice of leona not saying anything about a singer, but it was still from this song, i mean leonas voice (in this song of course)does not tell me a lot about her as a singer.

kelly sings with the mouth,leona sings with the heart.they are not even on the same level.
