Louis Walsh says Joe McElderry will sell more records than Rage Against The Machine

X Factor judge Louis Walsh has told Joe McElderry not to lose heart after losing the battle for Christmas number one yesterday. He insists that Joe will go on to sell one million copies of his debut single ‘The Climb’ and more albums than RATM could ever hope for.

Louis told The Sun: “You always have novelty records at No1 for Christmas and Killing In The Name is nothing but that. Joe has nothing to worry about at all.

“With all the fuss about Rage Against The Machine, people might fail to realise that Joe has still sold 450,000 records, which is phenomenal. He only lost by a tiny 50,000 sales.

“He will sell a million singles. I think The Climb will be one of the biggest-selling singles of next year. Besides, it’s all about having a career – look at the albums chart. Alexandra Burke, JLS and Leona Lewis have all come from X Factor and sold millions.”

Walsh added: “Joe will go on to sell a lot more albums than Rage ever have done. He’s going to have a huge career. Missing out on No1 this week will not make a difference to his life.

“Rage Against The Machine couldn’t fill Wembley now. I think Joe will.”

Quote of year, no contest! And this is a man who JUDGES acts!

Walsh: “Joe will go on to sell a lot more albums than Rage ever have done.”

Currently Joe is behind by at least the equivalent by nine US platinum albums (two 3x platinum, one 2x platinum, and one platinum).

Begorragh and bejasus im wrong again!

  5. Moz says:

Joe could fill Wembley (stadium)? Joe could never EVER fill Wembley on his own merit, i’ll happily eat my words and my hat if he does. Just another pop chart friendly so-called expert making himself look ridiculous. Please continue by all means, it’s all rather funny.

  6. Hannah says:

For once i actually agree with louis walsh!! Joe is soooo much better that RATM how did they even sell one record ???? Moz, and you could fill wembly stadium on your own could you ?? your comment just made you look rediculous GIMP.

  8. Danielle says:

funny how RATM were telling everybody not to buy the xfactor single but to buy theirs…AND EVERYBODY DID…but xfactor NEVER told the public to buy their single in the first place, the public just CHOSE to..haha RATM were just looking for a way to get a uk number 1 and they could only get it off the back of x factor anyway!! they wouldnt have even made top 20 if it werent for the publicity against xfactor…lameeee, now watch them fade away and never have another hit in the uk again :)

just for the record, im not a massive Joe fan, but I feel sorry for him, RATM shouldve just let it be rather than be scrooges about the whole thing..

    • Kyle says:

You are a moron Danielle, the problem with people like you is that to see music as being good it needs to be in a chart.

The idea everyone voted for rage was because they were sick of x factor dominating everything.

Rage are being seen as bad guys when really they have done much more for justice than most artists have. It’s because we have morons like you that watch x factor and read right wing papers like the sun and the daily mail that they’re made out to be bad guys.

‘Joe will go on to sell a lot more albums than Rage ever have done’ – yeah if he gets that job at HMV.
And as for Joe selling more than rage? Well Rage are massive in the states so i’d like to see him conquer America.
I’m going to save this article and look at it in 6 months time, should be a laugh.

      • Avenger says:

And you are a cretan Kyle. You sound like a nasty little child in your rant-you don’t know what paper Danielle reads so stop making idiotic assumptions. As for RATM nobody I know (and most of the country i suspect) had never heard of them. I also know people in the States and they haven’t heard of them either! So HARDLY huge. Without x-factor they would have remained in the graveyard from which they have (temporarily) risen!

      • Chi says:

Avenger, have you ever watched “The Matrix”? The film’s main song, “Wake Up”, was by Rage Against the Machine. They are huge, so the fact that you “don’t know anyone” who has heard of RATM says more about you than it does about RATM, I’m afraid.

      • Avenger says:

Chi- if RATM are so huge as you state then EVERYONE would have heard of them. Garbage sang “the world is not enough” and they are/were def. NOT huge either. RATM are only huge in the minds of RATM supporters NO ONE else.

      • Rage says:

Wow, your ignorance amazes me. Chi is completely right that not having heard of RATM says more about you than about them. Their debut album sold 3 million copies in America alone, more than Joe will sell in his whole “career” -if you can call singing karaoke songs that.

They are a hugely successful and influential band who could easily sell-out Wembley, their guitarist Tom Morello ranked #26 on Rolling Stone’s greatest guitarists of all time. Yes that would be one of the most well known pop-music and culture magazines in the world. Ranking higher than Brian May from Queen and Pete Townsend from The Who, heard of them?

To say that Rage Against The Machine are unknown is laughable. Sure they may have been out of the spotlight for a while, but then again they haven’t released an album since 1999. However that did not stop them headlining the Reading festival(that would be the longest running music festival in the world) in 2007 and playing to 80,000 people.

Please aquire some knowledge before ever spewing your ridiculous nonsense ever again. Thank you.

      • Avenger says:

If YOU really think that I am the ONLY person who has NOT heard of RATM then you are TOTALLY ignorant!! And a moron! Do you REALLY think the vast majority of the country knew who they were before the campaign took off.?!!! Like many RATM supporters who have posted here your MOUTH is bigger than your brain. You quote record sales as if that means everything. Yes we all know shit sells. The spice Girls debut album sold 7xPlatinum in America alone. So that makes it quality-right??!! You can take your venom and shove it (You might need to ask a grown-up to explain where to you).

      • Kyle says:

        oh dear Avenger.

If you have not heard of a band it doesn’t mean everyone else hasn’t.

an ostrich will stick it’s head in the ground assuming that because it can’t see, it is hidden.

It’s only because a very small – let’s say people that take the daily mail and the sun seriously, population believe that heavy metal warps young people’s minds and try and avoid them where possible.

End of the day, Rage got to number one, because more people bought it, simple as that. If Joe’s single sold more it would have been number one. But it didn;t. People prefered Rage, unknown band? Please, just because none of your mates have heard of them means F A. I mean the chances are they only really value music as temporary pop songs that appear on the radio and change when fashion does.

An unknown band would not get to no.1.
        Get over it

    • James says:

      Aha
I would like to point out that actually RATM did not start the campiagn to get the song to No.1 and they were certainly not ‘just looking for a way to get no.1′.

This is the thing people don’t seem to understand about real music… they couldn’t care less if they got no.1 or not its about the MUSIC (not sure if you understand that term).

I would also like to point out that RATM cannot fade away becuase they aren’t a band anymore – this music is ‘old’ … at which point i expect u are thinking “quick, run, hide there is music about that came out early than this year oh nooo it cant be good”

none understands ‘old’ does NOT mean bad!

ANd if you think for one minute ‘the public just choose’ to buy joe’s single (isnt actually joe’s anyway) you are very naive to the concept of TV! Some of the public have let themselves be exposed to this crap TV for months as it slowly sublimilay makes you think that the music that comes out of the end is going to be good :/

the only people im feeling sorry for is those who watch Xfactor tbh… i am sad to think that people have let them selves get sucked into it sooo much!

    • Avenger says:

What a load of tosh Kyle-even you must realise it!! Unknown bands have been getting to N0 1 since the chart began! It’s the songs people like-duh? In RATM it was most def. NOT the song as it is rubbish-but it was the chance to make some kind of “protest”. WE ALL KNOW THAT IS THE REASON. As for “heavy metal” you made the point yourself-it isn’t liked by as many who like pop so they won’t have heard of many of the bands! kinda makes sense !!!You make absurd (as usual on these posts) assumptions about the music i like. You have seen my CD collection-right?!! YOU need to get over the fact that HUGE numbers of people had never heard of RATM-fact!

  9. Switzerland says:

I think Rage are great and so is the beautiful and talented Joe.
Chill children, and concentrate on the important things in life like falling in love with a worthy person, living a happy life and contributing to the world.
Don’t waste time trying to make a little point like this – if Joe is liked enough he will go on being successful – if not he won’t, don’t waste all that angst arguing with strangers about it…
‘Joe McElderry for number one someday’ Go Joe!
(He can definately SING – now that IS a talent.)

    • James says:

The problem with this is it doesnt seem to be about MUSIC… “if Joe is liked enough”, “beautiful Joe” these terms do not relate to the MUSIC!

I’d like to mention another quote from Joe:
He was asked “So what type of music do you like?”
He answered “chart music, anything that is in the charts”

Now since when has chart music ever been a genre; he is basically saying “i like ‘music’ that other people like” < is that original, is it individual, is it human?

I forgot the charts even existed, they (or any other mass-media thing) affect my decisions in life. I'm not saying i don't like any music in the charts a lot of it is great… I like most types of music, i just believe humans are individual.

      • Switzerland says:

Yes JAMES beautiful does relate to Joe, he has a BEAUTIFUL VOICE which people LIKE… As for him saying he likes anything in the charts – HE LIKES POPULAR MUSIC…Christ it’s not rocket science and stop nitpicking!!!

  10. Chocolati says:

Killing In The Name is a boring song, in my opinion. I tried to like it but no! I don’t like the music and I don’t like the voice…

I will not buy this song.

Yes, Joe comes from a big countest… but if the countest would have been smaller, some people who talk against him would have praised him instead.

He’s got a really good voice, and a nice personality. I like him. I’m not fond of the song The Climb but the young man as potential!

  11. Chris says:

Hahahaha the fact rage have already role millions and sell out everywhere….. Oh god this article is funny

  12. Gary says:

    Joe vs RATM

    1) RATM sold over 500,000 albums sales in the first week of release in the US with their debut album.
    2) RATM have over 10 million record sales in their first 7 years.
    3) Tom Morello is known as one of the greatest guitarists of all time.
    4) RATM headlined Reading & Leeds after 15 years of being together
    5) RATM had much bigger competition when they first started. They were up against Guns n Roses, Metallica, Nirvana, Green Day, AC/DC, Pearl JAM, Van Halen etc

Can Joe match that? We’ll have to wait & see.

  13. khoustello says:

This time next year he will be flogging burgers-Van Day,Brookstein etc.

  14. KHOUSTELLO says:

Mc Elderry to fill Wembley? Is he now a professional footballer-that was quick.Wrong again you little leprecauhn Walsh.
