One Direction 2012: 1D accused of sampling The Clash song on Live While We’re Young!
Fans of One Direction have no doubt heard the band’s new single Live While We’re Young about a trillion times already, but some listeners reckon that 1D have “ripped off” a famous guitar riff…
When the video to Live While We’re Young debuted on YouTube, some angry fans took to internet forum to complain that the opening bars of the track are the same as those on The Clash’s hit, Should I Stay or Should I Go.
One listener wrote, “One Direction clearly tried ripping off the Clash with the intro to their new song.”
And another added, “Oh no. One Direction have nicked the intro to Should I Stay Or Should I Go by the Clash. Sacrilege.”
The 1D lads, Liam Payne, Louis Tomlinson, Niall Horan, Zayn Malik and Harry Styles had to bring forward the release of the single after it was leaked online…
However, the leak – and subsequent official music video – have done little to harm sales, and pre-orders have already broken all records in around fifty countries.
Here’s a reminder of the song and video from 1D…
And here’s The Clash…
But of course, 1D’s fans hit back at critics of the track, similarly bombarding internet forums and social networking sites with praise for the song.
What do you think? Did 1D “rip off” The Clash? Does it even matter?

Total rip off, shame it’s the only good part of the entire track – but I doubt their tone deaf, only image conscious fans will care.
Thr clash example used is a terrible reference you cant hear the opening chords
The rthym is the same and the technique used by the chord is a bit different and processed differently
So if they didn’t get the inspiration from the clash then no it’s not a rip off but I doubt that they have not heard those infamous chords so they really should have sourced their reference
They didn`t rip it off!No one can accuse them of something that isn`t for sure like that!FIRST CHECK IT AND THEN TALK S**T!
If you check the song credits, The Clash is given credit which means One Direction (and their producers) did nothing wrong (unlike Vanilla Ice and other artists who have blatantly stolen from other songs without acknowledging it).
they deff. did NOT rip them off. The clash’s version sounds like shit and nothing like the boys version. The clash’s version is slower than the one directions. everyone should just drop the situation until The clash or someone important actually brings it to attention.until then just enjoy the song
I mean no offense, I have respect for the 1D guys (just not their genre of music or fans),
But every response I’ve ever seen to criticism on 1D ends in an illiterate, analphabet retaliation from a 15 year old boy or girl (Don’t get me wrong, I’m 16 myself) that spout out the one couple of curse words that comes to mind. I honestly think that 1D deserves better fans than you and everyone else. Also, as a deadbeat The Clash fan, it’s hard to keep in place while you give brainless critique on music that your brain is too immature to even hardly understand, but here’s my hint to you; Stop listening to music. You are the shame of planet Earth’s music industry, and you need to calm your senses and understand that there are only bad fans (like you). Sorry for being harsh, sis. Sincerely, Felix.
Hahaha “Shelby” The Clash’s “Should I Stay or Should I Go” is one of the most-heard songs of the 20th century! Like it or not, only media-fed people like yourself say that it sounds bad. The live sample on this website is not very good. Ask anyone who actually knows real music, and they will say that The Clash is legendary.
