One Direction 2012: After Louis Tomlinson’s Twitter outburst and Harry Styles silence, I ask…are 1D heading for a split?
Unreality TV received this comment from a One Direction fan today and we decided that the questions and points raised in it, are probably issues that many 1D supporters would like to discuss. Have a read and tell us if you agree with your fellow Directioner in the comments section below…
The comment relates to this article, in which we report about Louis Tomlinson’s recent Twitter rant about the rumours surrounding his and Harry Styles’ relationship.

I (1Dfan) wrote a detailed comment on your article “One Direction’s Louis Tomlinson slams ‘bullsh*t’ Larry Stylinson claims – insist he is NOT in a gay relationship with Harry Styles!” expressing my concern about the harm being done to Louis’ reputation.
I have a question: Is One Direction heading for a breakup?
The twitter incident was minor in the scheme of things but it really hurt Louis’ reputation and in turn affected the ticket sales for his charity event.
I think most 1D fans have the impression that Louis is generally a good-natured person, who does not take things too seriously and who is very loyal to his friends/family. I expected an official statement to be promptly issued apologizing for the incident reassuring fans that what happened was out of character and that Louis remains his kind self. An apology has not been issued and the tweets have not been deleted to date. Some fans on twitter have said that they will not buy any One Direction merchandise or support them in any way until they get an apology.
As I said in my previous comments, I think this a complete FAIL on the part of his management team and would suggest to the boys that if their representatives cannot properly handle something so minor that they immediately (TODAY) look into the possibility of changing management companies. With the recent departure of others acts from Modest Management and their mishandling of this minor situation, 1D would have grounds to discuss whether the contact be terminated or modified.
I also expected Louis’ bandmates to immediately show support for him in some way to the public. For example, tweeting support for his charity football match since it did not sell out day 1 as expected. That has not happened.
One Direction as a band, has always promoted itself as a team but I am starting to see articles about Harry Styles leaving One Direction to become a solo artist after the next tour ends. If the band members do not demonstrate their complete solidarity to the public whenever challenges arise, then outside forces will continue to try to tear them apart.

I’m really scared they are going to breakup….if you think about it they really haven’t been reassuring us but I dont think Harry would leave….💔 if he leaves or any of them it’s not one direction anymore. That sounds so cheesy but it’s true. I feel like my heart is breaking.
Rachel, I agree, I have the same exact feeling. I know that most bands break up, true, but One Direction is at the top, young, hot, and talented. I do know that I always thought that One Direction would gain as much fame as the Beetles, but even when they weren’t a band, they would continue to be the best of friends. There would be complete HELL if One Direction did break up. I would, and millions of others too, would be sad, beyond belief, if 1D did break up. I’m a Larry shipper, but as a bromance, not a romance. But, right now, Directioners, 1D is going through a tough time, and we need to give them as much support as possible. 1D, much like the Beatles, and to a much lesser extent, JB, changed the world. Like I said, 1D is going through a tough time, and instead of being selfish and demanding apologies, we need to stand by our boys, and support them as much as we can. I know I already said that, but it is completely and utterly true, I am pushing its importance. All bands go through a tough time, but what gets them through it is fans, and support. Take JB, for example. Now, JB was seriously thinking of quitting the music industry, but fans saw that, and supported him, wholly and completely. Most people think that his new song, As Long As You Love Me, is dedicated to his gf, Selena Gomez, but it is really dedicated to his fans. He said so himself. JB might no have blown up, and snapped, but, while he was going through a tough time, his fans got him through it. 1D might have a bit more problems, but every problem has a solution, and the solution to their problem is support. Now, don’t get me wrong, I do believe that Louis made the wrong decision, but you know the old saying, ‘Forgive and forger.’ Directioners, right now that’s what we need to do. I know this might seem long and boring, but really think about it. Louis- if not completely- did apologise, and we need to accept that. Please, please, if you read this, do as I say, and show them the support they need. I am going to go to other sites saying this, as I firmly believe it. Now, since I don’t have a twitter account, but I do know about it, maybe you guys could hash tag Support 1D and get it trending? I know that’s a lot to ask, but please, it’s a way to show them that we mean it. If you get it trending, that would be amazing. Please. Thank you.
Louis just tweeted that he was looking forward to seeing the lads today. Seeing as 1D were probably rehearsing yesterday for the itunes festival, it seemed a bit of a strange one. It was a tweet for our benefit rather than anything else, to reassure fans that they are as close as ever. Maybe Louis googled himself and saw this article, lol.
I do not believe One Direction are heading for a split, however i do feel their popularity is going to take a significant dip. One Direction are well known for being a clean polished band. Their twitter accounts never suggested they are anything more than five innocent young Lads. This means that outbursts like the one Louis displayed take the fans by surprise and have altogether greater consequences. Some artists (Such as Example or The Wanted) are much more free with what they say on twitter, they speak their minds and do not concern themselves with other peoples opinions. The One Direction lads are very concious of what they say, as well as being closely monitored by their management. Louis was clearly feeling frustrated and chose to let his thoughts be known to the world. This had a great effect due to how unexpected it was. One Direction appear to be an incredibly manufactured group, therefore, outbursts such as the one Tomlinson displayed could indeed affect the popularity of the. I think the most important thing is that the Fans need to remember that One Direction are real people, with real lives, not the people who fit in with their made up fantasties.

Louis may have been mad but when these Larry Stylinson fans are giving their money to see them, to buy their stuff Don’t go on a ran. His tickets are not going to sell out because to be honest he is the replaceable one. I hope Harry does leave this band because honestly I am a fan of Harry Styles not 1D. He is so true to himself he makes himself more appealing and likeable. He has stayed silent because really why should he defend Louis. Haven’t seen him with Louis in months other than when he has to be. Watch videos of him with Grimmers and you see the real Harry Styles. Love it!!! I tweeted Louis to tell him I will buy a ticket to his charity event if he can assure me that Harry will be there with Grimmers. So start apologizing to Harry soon Louis.. “He said sorry to all the real fans” All the fans are real fans, no matter what they chose to ‘believe.’ They basically dedicate their life to him and the boys (through money, time, ect.), he should respect that, no matter how bizarre they are. He shouldn’t single out a group of mostly minors just because it bothers him -he’s famous, it comes with the gig. So no, the ‘apology’ did not suffice, he caused a lot of young girls to receive massive amounts of mistreatment, just for clinging to a belief that he may be gay. (It’s not actually an insult to be believed gay, I wish more people would see that.) I don’t share in these beliefs but I do hope he acknowledges that what he did was wrong and that all fans matter, regardless of how they act -they’re mostly teenage girls anywho!
One, Louis DID say sorry on his twitter, he was just pissed that extrem Larry-shippers were bashing Eleanor, THE PERSON WHO MAKES HIM HAPPY. Two, I’ve seen a ton of comments from people saying they weren’t going because of what he said about Larry.
Also, the second time he lost his cool, he may not have said sorry to some people but he did say he was sorry to all true fans he offended. And I stand by him getting pissed because people started to attack his MOTHER.
Reacting to the attack on his mother was fine in my eyes. But really for Larry NOT COOL!! There will be repurcussions and I am very sorry but if you don’t want the label of being gay with Harry then keep your fudgin hands off him. REALLY!!! Malboro: He owes an apology to his fans for putting stipulations on who he considers “real” fans and who he doesn’t. No matter if you believe in Larry, Elounor,Nouis, Lilo, Louis with an inanimate object–whatever—We all put dollars in his pocket and we are all true fans.
An apology for what? For him getting angry at the people who keep making up rumours about him being in a gay relationship with Harry? For him lashing out at the people who keep attacking Eleanor all because they don’t think Elounor is real? Grow up people, whether or not these rumours are true, this is Louis’ PERSONAL life, and his fans should respect his privacy.

I supporting these boys no matter what. What Louis said on twitter needed to be said. This Larry thing is getting out of head and im tired of hearing. I dont even ship Larry. I am not concerned about Larry (a fictional concept/creation). I am concerned about Louis and One Direction as people and a business/brand. Think of the group as a new business team. They have the raw talent between them that just maybe they can transcend being a flash hit boy band that is popular for a year or two before fading away to becoming an enduring group for the ages.
In order to protect their brand, they have to work together and overcome the growing pains of them maturing as people, and the business growing and changing. If they stick together and do the things that, they planned–like maturing their sound for each album, maybe they will still be together when they are granddads. Harry can sing indie songs if he wants, Zayn R&B, etc…why would they have to leave a successful brand to do that? It might be interesting in five years to hear the influence each boy’s personal taste has on the band’s song list and sound. Note: I have heard reports that a few songs on THIS album may surprise some people in terms of the vibe/sound.
Louis is paying a very heavy price in terms of his professional reputation doing nothing about the tweets.
Louis has made his point. Even if he stands by everything that was written, he needs to do some damage control.
Think about it. What not delete the tweets? All the news articles and blog posts are still out there. The other 1D members immediately deleted posts that were a lot less damaging.
Even if Louis doesn’t issue an apology, he is a celebrity who needs ALL his fans, he should make some gesture that he is still a likeable guy and that he appreciates ALL of his fans, even the crazies.
I do not think the PR strategy of being photographed with Kevin is enough repair his public image.
I recommend that he do something STRONG/SHOCKING (that blows the tweets out of people’s mind) like during an interview or at the concert tonight say “I love my beautiful girlfriend, Harry is my good friend and no, I’m not homophobic.” THEN KISS HARRY ON THE MOUTH. Random Louis BACK with a vengeance! Something for ALL the fans. Plenty of other bands have done it.
If the other four lads want to help Louis, I think that 1D has to show that they are a team and ideally, that Harry and Louis are still friends. Before fans would have bought tickets to his charity event just on the off chance that some of the other boys, especially Harry would show up. It would have sold out in 1 day. That it still has not sold out speaks volumes about the damage the tweets did to his professional brand.
Obviously, since none of the others boys have shown him any public support, it possible that they are not
still a tightknit team, which is unfortunate. Without teamwork, the business will probably fold at the end of the next tour.
In general, I do not understand the One Direction PR strategies/management advice (although leaking the single early and having Louis tweet on Sunday that Kevin be sent back–he reappeared today–worked for a certain segment of fans). Their management goes through complicated measures instead of sticking with the tried and true–keep it simple, tell the truth as much as possible, if you make a mistake admit it, apologize and show that you are sorry, etc…
Reports today are that One Direction made £100 million in two years, so what do I know.
Update: Niall mentioned the charity event during the twitter answer session at the iTunes Fest.
To be honest, I know that 1D is a band, so makes money, but I hate that almost all the comments are focused around business. Also, ‘Put dollars in his pocket’? They’re BRITISH guys… My sis is a Larry shipper, and has never done anything insulting towards Louie or his family. Elounor and Larry shippers have an ongoing war, but when it gets out of hand: Ta-da! This happens. Woop de doo.

Since when does confronting somebody who disrespected and said hurtful and mean things to a family member/close friend mean that 1D are breaking up? Just because Harry and Louis are always touching each other (Not that way you sickos!!) Doesn’t mean that they are gay! I hug my friends and sit on their laps….Do you want to label me lesbian now? Because that’s what you’re doing with Lou and Harry. It’s not right. Go on and talk about it within the fandom and with other fans but to even bring it up to the boys on twitter to the point where they have to tweet about it? unnecessary. I find it especially funny that the same people who are saying they aren’t buying anymore 1D merch, music, etc. are the same people who caused that comment from Louis on twitter.

Just because Harry didn’t come to the defense of the comment Louis made about being sick of Larry rumors, doesn’t mean that they are “Breaking up after the next tour”
#3 I can more than guarantee the reason why the other guys didn’t tweet about the charity game is because they were not allowed to because of their management team. Do you not realize how much control they have on the boys? A whole lot more than you think!
Give it a break and don’t worry about the small crap. Just because they’re famous, doesn’t mean they can’t freak out at someone on the internet. Everyone does that. I have too.
just support their career/music/decisions and not worry about what they say on twitter especially when they tweet stuff like Lou did, because 85% of the time, Management makes them tweet that stuff so we think that it’s them and that they are really pissed at us.
Louis acting out of anger because of the alligations that he was in a gay are completley understandable considering that they have been going on for such a long time. If he feels the right to express himself on the matter, I believe he is completely entitled to.
I related breaking up in the context of them not working as a team.
The more the everyone (including their management) understands that they are a solid team of five, the better chance they have to survive and grow as a band. They must work together at all times. Meet with just the five before meeting with others. Longterm success in the Music Industry is one in a million. If managers or other people think they can tear the group apart they will.
Think of it this way. If your best friend/brother screws up and needs your support even if they are fighting with you or are wrong, do you help them or leave them to fight alone? The boys must stand together when crisis come up, small and big.
Happy to report that lots of positive interactions happened at the iTunes Fest. It was subtle versus shocking as I recommended but it was there. The PR team was working overtime. Watch the videos.
There were a few things that happened today that were bizarre/suspicious/crazy but I won’t go into those because most fans probably didn’t notice.
I expect a few more PR events over the next week. I wouldn’t even be surprised if something happened tomorrow.
Now if only the tweets would be deleted.
Harry leaving the band would be great his talent is wasted in that bubblegum pop band I’d buy his music for sure. Love his voice hate how they choose to use it.
I find the band’s PR to be totally confusing. In the past 7 days, from twitter outburst to album leak, to leaving fans with no signing after waiting in Germany.
As the hottest thing out there, they should be setting the tone and trends. Not coming up short.
Hopefully, Simon will get them some help. Maybe from Scooter Braun. Justin Bieber seems to be doing well.
My hope is also that the young men have strong family and friends to help them survive the mania.
It was good to see Louis and Harry talking Saturday. They seem to have special friendship and it would be a shame if they could not enjoy it. Its rare. I think any problems could be resolved if they remember that people say daily that they would love to have anyone in their life that they felt connected with with even one-tenth of their natural connection. The advice I used in my life: commit,accept what you have is the best; forget about the rest; be friends and protect each other and the friendship first at all times.
Also, as young lads, with miminal education and a long life to lead; it seems a pity that some at least seem to not be honing their craft, rather they drink nightly and seem to have no other real interests. Life is long and once the mania is over, one must find things to do. Even the hardcore partiers stop or burnout eventually.
Hopefully the group has a counselor to help them adjust to their evolving roles as professionals and adults. They all seem to have the basic foundation to last for the ages, sometimes though; help with challenges may be needed to move forward.
Louis Tomlinson seems very vestile and I read that he might be on Top Gear. These types of projects would be great. Also, he has been seen reading and furthering his knowledge. Must have a short and long-term plan. With his new house, I would not be surprised to find out in 10 years that has been married in secret for years. He is a knight and seems the generous type to wrap everything up quickly.
The other boys I have not heard much about, except Styles. And there seems to be a lot given to him. I wonder if he understand that though. He never seems to talk up the others or support them, the way they support him. He seems to prefer to support people outside the band by doing PR.not sure about why. Also, he seems to party nightly and hang out on the streets and not much else.
Niall is the Irish Sensation and is exploring lots of projects and has his own manager. Seems the right thing.
Anyway, I would hope the group stays together. They can use the 1D name and do all the side projects, etc… Plus all members are above average singers given the right material and marketing.
I think the group has a unique place in time and history where they could set new models for how entertainers proceed. It will be interesting to see what they decide to do.
I’m honestly over it. If Harry leaves the band firstly it will be a great waste of his amazayn talent. I think that we owe this worry to all the FAKE directioners who think its okay to hurt peoples feelings like that. I honestly am so over it. Louis on the other hand has the right to be angry if the gay rumours just won’t stop. Let him and his girlfriend be. Just be a true directioner and support and love the 1D boys. Their life and all. I have no hate towards any of the boys becuase after all I think we are all forgetting that they are human and therefore have feelings and make mistakes. Let’s not hurt their feelings and make a big thing out of their mistakes and just accept them as people.
One direction I love you and I would be so devastated if you broke up as a band. Moon and back!
