One Direction 2012: Fans in uproar after Zayn Malik is accused of trying to convert fangirls to Islam
Zayn Malik has found himself caught up in some sort of religious furore, without even realising it.
American blogger Debbie Schlussel has written about the One Direction star, accusing the handsome singer of having a religious agenda and trying to secretly convert his legions of fans to Islam.
The 43 year old writer is an attorney, film critic, political commentator, and a conservative blogger who focuses particularly on Islam and American Muslims. Her columns are known to be provocative and controversial and regularly focus on what she considers the unsavory elements of Islam.
This week she has turned her attention to the British band and Zayn in particular and insisted that the X Factor star is using his massive Twitter following and his tattoos to promote the religion.
Debbie titled her article:
‘Boy Band Jihad: Mega Pop Star Pimping Islam on Your Daughters’
She slammed the handsome singer for tweeting about his ‘fasting for Ramadan’ and hit out because he ‘told fans that allah is the only god and that only Mohammed is G-d’s true prophet.’
The author also claimed that the only reason Zayn made it into One Direction, was because of his background and religious beliefs. She thinks his look and his ethnicity appealed to ITV bosses, and continued:
‘[He was] chosen for the boy band specifically because he’s a Paki Muslim, to appeal to that rapidly growing demographic in the UK. ‘
That’s a bit of a jump isn’t it?
Debbie then recommended that parents encourage their young daughters to stay ‘ away from Zayn Malik’s enticing jihad.’
She insisted that the band’s management have made sure that ‘it’s all about pimping Islam amid the deceptive visage of angelic, effeminate boys in a band.’
If Schulussel was trying to provoke a reaction, then she definitely got what she wanted as in the last week, she has received almost 700 comments on her article.
In general, fans seem to be coming out in support of their idol and one wrote:
‘You really have the lack of heart to attack a 19 yeat old young man for his religion? really? the amount of stupidity and judgmental opinions in this makes me sick. im a huge fan of one direction and just because he has tattoos in arabic and tweets twice about his religion calls for the need that parents should keep us away from the band?’
Another blasted:
‘I find this article extremely disgusting. The boy has pride in his faith like any other white Christian kid from Napa Valley. The tweet regarding “First rosay today, who’s fasting? X” was to simply connect with Muslim fans. Debbie, if you’re going to be racist towards someone and post it on the internet at least learn some common sense.’
A third insisted:
‘He’s only half muslim. And his arabic tattoos are his dead grandfathers name, and a phrase about love.
This is the most offensive thing I’ve read in a while. Not ever muslim is a terrorist. Christianity isn’t the only religion on the world. America is the only country obsessed with oppressing everyone elses beliefs. In England, Muslim people are accepted.’

Firstly, his tattoos, which are against what Islam dictates (for lack of a better word), are inscriptions that represent things close to his heart, such as his grandfather’s name. They are personal things, and they are not there for narrow minded snobs such as you, Debbie, to criticise.
Secondly, by posting two comments that are not imposing any views upon his followers, merely stating a fact and asking a question, he is simply recognising his religion and 1 of it’s components. It would be a different case if he continuously posted things stating that Islam and things directly linked were the single correct religion, which he most definitely is not! His comments were almost the equivalent to someone acknowledging the fact that it was good friday.
