One Direction 2012: Spandau Ballet star Tony Hadley says he wishes 1D had sung at Olympics opening ceremony

It’s been reported today that veteran pop star Tony Hadley, who of course shot to fame in hit eighties band Spandau Ballet, has revealed that he would have liked to see One Direction perform at the opening ceremony of the Olympics.

Speaking to Absolute Radio, Tony explained, “If I’m honest I would have liked a really young band to have closed it.

“If you’ve got Sir Steve Redgrave handing over the torch to the youngsters, it would have been nice to have had One Direction.

“They’re our biggest export at the moment, pure pop.”

Tony added that he’d also like to have seen the boys, Niall Horan, Harry Styles, Liam Payne, Louis Tomlinson and Zayn Malik, performing one of their hit tracks, backed by a symphony orchestra…

He said, “One Direction with the Royal Philharmonic, with about 100 singers in a choir, behind them.

“To me that would have been the new generation kind of thing.”

However it has of course been confirmed that among other stars, One Direction will perform live during the Olympics’ closing ceremony.
