One Direction have made history this week, as it was revealed that they topped the American Billboard album charts with their record ‘Up All Night.’

The debut release from the X Factor band has been riding high in the iTunes download chart all week and we were all expecting it to do well when the official chart placings were released, but the teen sensations couldn’t have hoped this time last month, that they would claim the top spot.

The boys have broken a record previously set by The Beatles and are now the first ever British stars to reach number one on the Billboard charts. The Beatles were previously the highest debuting, and they claimed the number four spot.

In the last week, 1D have sold 170,000 copies of ‘Up All Night’ and it was enough to knock fellow Brit Adele from number one.

Harry Styles is elated with the news and thanked the band’s fans saying:

“We simply cannot believe that we are No.1 in America!” Harry said this morning. “It’s beyond a dream come true for us.

“We want to thank each and every one of our fans in the US who bought our album and we would also like to thank the American public for being so supportive of us.”

Simon Cowell said: “I couldn’t be happier for One Direction, it is an incredible achievement. They deserve it. They have the best fans in the world”

Fellow X Factor star Olly Murs congratulated the boys, tweeting:

“WELL DONEEEEE!! @onedirection #1 with Debut Album in US Billboard Charts!! 1st Ever Uk Band to do it!! That’s amazing stuff lads!! Ledge!!”

1D will now go on to perform their hit single at The Nickelodeon Kids Choice Awards later this month and will also make an appearance on Saturday Night Live.

They will then jet off to Australia and New Zealand to begin their tour down under, but reports suggest that the boys will soon announce a full scale US tour to take place in the summer.
