One Direction certainly are the men of the moment!

The UK band took America by storm last night, as they swept up all three awards they had been nominated for at the MTV VMAs in LA. The lads had faced stiff competition from stars such as Rihanna, Justin Bieber and The Wanted but lifted trophies for Most Shareworthy Video and Best Pop Video for “What Makes You Beautiful,” and later they scored a third Moonman in the Best New Artist category.

Not bad going for a band who were put together by a team of X Factor judges just two years ago!

In the Most Shareworthy category, the big battle was between 1D and Bieber, with a massive 27 million votes being cast for the British singers, meaning that they attracted almost 1.5 million votes more than their Canadian pal and his “Boyfriend” video.

The fans of Beyoncé, Carly Rae Jepsen and Gotye were not nearly so enthusiastic and while both Bieber and 1D brought in more than 54 million votes between then, Beyonce lagged in third place with only 163,000, Carly Rae was even lower with 67,000 and Gotye got just 52,000.

Later in the night Katy Perry presented Liam Payne, Niall Horan, Louis Tomlinson, Zayn Malik and Harry Styles with their second gong, this time for Best Pop Video. The ‘I Kissed A Girl’ hitmaker had a bit of a butter finger moment and as she reached to hug the guys in congratulation, she broke their trophy, sending Moonman’s flag flying across the floor.

Niall didn’t seem to mind though and he thanked everyone who had voted, saying:

“Wow, thank you very much Katy. Thanks for the kiss. Thank you so much. We’ve grown up watching this show. And to even be here is an honor and to collect one of these is absolutely incredible!”

Liam found it all very amusing and added:

“I just want to say we’ve had this award for two seconds and already we broke it so there’s a good start. It’s amazing to be here. I also want to say a massive thank you to our team backstage.”

Lastly, the lads were presented their third and final award for Best New Artist by Ke$ha and Wiz Khalifa

It was Zayn who said a few words this time and he thanked everyone, his friends, family, fans, team….everyone…well except Perrie Edwards.

Malik said:

“I guess we’d just like to say a massive thank-you to each and every single one of you in here today. Also to all of our fans, friends, family and also the people who work with us day in, day out backstage with us: our crew. We have an amazing crew. We have so many people to thank, so I’m going to pass it to Harry.”

The lads also took to the stage during the ceremony, showcasing their second single from their debut album ‘Up All Night’, ‘One Thing..
