Parents have hit out at boyband One Direction and accused them of ripping off their young fans.
Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson, Niall Horan, Zayn Malik and Liam Payne are on their way to Manchester where they will begin the latest stage of their Take Me Home world tour and fans travelling to see their idols live can expect to be charged a whopping £40 for a hoodie or £25 for a t-shirt, if they visit the merchandise stalls in concert venues.
That’s a 70% mark up on high street items of a smilier nature and quality, but of course without the 1D logo or branding.
One fan blasted the pricing structure at the gigs and told The Daily Star:
“When I went to see One Direction in Glasgow, they wanted £40 for a hoodie. “And I couldn’t afford that so I bought a wristband for £5 which I was willing to pay.
Another said: “It’s a rip-off to be honest.”
Siobhan Freegard, founder of Netmums.com, told the newspaper:
“When it comes to band merchandise, prices are only moving in one direction and that’s upwards.
“Parents appreciate artists have to make back the cost of their tours but charging up to four times more than the high street because it has a logo on it is a rip-off.
“The majority of One Direction’s fans are tweens and early teens, so they don’t have a lot of money to spend.”
However, the exorbitant prices don’t seem to be putting fans or their parents off parting with their hard earned cash, as it was announced this week that the X Factor boyband will be launching their first ever English pop shop – 1D World – in Leeds this year.
The shop follows similar ventures in New York, Sydney, Toronto, Stockholm and Chicago and all have proved incredibly profitable for the fab fivesome and their team.
The band’s official Twitter account revealed that there will also be shops opening in Barcelona and Minneapolis, posting:
“1D World Pop Up Store opens in Barcelona, Spain next Saturday! Follow @1DWorldMerch for details! 1DHQ x #1DWorldBCN”
“Are you ready Minneapolis? Only 3 more days until #1DWorldMpls opens at @mallofamerica!”
