Under United States law, anyone applying for a visa must declare a previous arrest. If that arrest resulted in a conviction then they are ineligible to receive a visa. In rare cases a waiver of this ineligibility can be granted but again, this is rare.
I am not trying to persecute Mrs Cole but I believe that she is being credited with more talent than she actually has. There are thousands of other more deserving, more talented people in the UK with a lot more to offer in the way of art and entertainment than she will ever have.

No, it’s not: I might be wrong, but I think it’s illegal to discriminate against someone on the basis of a spent conviction.

But I think with Cheryl, it’s all about how you want to see it: would you rather persecute her for a minor fracas years ago, or would you applaud her for putting the incident behind her and going on to have a successful career. Surely that’s a role model for anyone who’s done something wrong in the past?

What about the thousands of British residents who have tried to move or work in other countries but have been refused because of something they did wrong years ago. They took their punishment and served their time so by your rules they should all be allowed to move to or work in whichever country they please. Or is it another example of one rule for some and another rule for others?

Wow. I totally disagree James. Cheryl received a conviction for the nightclub incident, and paid it out in community service as far as I can remember. Now, according to the rule of the land, once someone’s conviction is spent, they should be left to get on with their lives.

I could ask you – is it right to continue to punish someone after they made a mistake and paid for their crime? It’s not as if she’s out punching bathroom attendants every weekend now, is it?

Admittedly, Cheryl is not going to win any awards for singing, but she seems to be a compassionate judge and a confident media personality. Why keep dragging up all this stuff from years ago?

Other people with criminal records have to pay the price for having it even it was a silly mistake at a young age. Why should Mrs Cole be treated any differently? Other celebrities get criticised or even sacked for receiving criminal convictions but Mrs Cole is to be treated differently because??
I can’t see what sort of international star she is going to make, perhaps it will be acting, she seems to be good at making people believe what isn’t real. She most certainly can’t sing.

Simion Cowell is supposed to be a great judge of talent but is letting his groin rule his head when it comes to Mrs Cole. She is gorgeous without a doubt but completely talentless. She was one of the worst singers on Popstars the Rivals, winning it purely for her looks. Other contestants with much much more talent were not given the chance they should have had and she is in no position to criticise or judge others.

ITV have lost the plot in choosing her as a judge. For goodness sake choose someone who has some talent and can make constructive criticism on the thousands of talented people in the UK.
